I played Grandover West on Friday. Was in decent shape. Course is fine, but nothing special. Doesn’t elicit much of a response, wouldn’t really have a desire to play it again. The vibes are pretty low, just feels like a cheap resort made for business meetings only. Food was shit before the round.
Unfortunetly I am not going to be able to make it work this time! Hope you all enjoy and safe travels man.
This, this, a million times this
My issues with grandover are from the way it’s run more than anything. It’s overpriced by $30 compared to comparable courses in the city, but you can pay money to buy a local card to make the rate lower. No twilight rates, no walking rate (I’d never walk them anyway), no senior rate. Full price all the time. The range price is a farce, it’s like $15 these days and not included with your round. Some of the holes on the East just fucking suck, 9 and 13 especially (I used to include 12 too but I haven’t played the reworked version. I remember it looking ok, definitely better than it was). Awkward tee shots, overly penal second shots, crazy ridges on the greens. Courses are never in as good of shape as they should be, super loves to topdress the East with way too much sand on Thursdays so they’re sandy all weekend, bent grass on the west is always spongy and soft, even in prime bent season.
Hotel rooms are nice, spa is really nice, I’ve always really liked the food, but I feel like they’re just squeezing every dime out of anyone who goes there, and people keep doing it because “oh it’s more expensive than others in the area, it must be nicer”.
Bryan Park is the same thing and is so welcoming and a pleasure to play, I always feel like I’m getting a great deal, even on weekend mornings
I played the east previously and actively hated it. Really penal and just dumb holes. West greens have dramatic tiers but they don’t play correctly because of what you said about the bent. It is PRIME bent season here, they should be fantastic, but they were spongy and wet and it had not really rained at all lately. Making the ridges boring honestly, you had to hammer putts up them and down you didn’t have to think all that hard.
I’ll prob avoid unless forced to play through work again.
When I was working there I was playing some of the best golf of my life (maybe there’s something to that?), but I felt like I would shoot 76 or 78 every time I played the East. I’d either start well then blow it on 15-18 (16 is my nemesis) or I’d get ripped up on 4-9 then play well coming in. Shot 70 once and never got close again
Bryan Park is fantastic. Cannot beat it for the price in the area. Grandover is an awful experience especially for what you pay. I would pay more to play at Jamestown or Holly Ridge before I would play there.
Highly recommend Holly Ridge and Bryan Park
Are you in the Triad area? We have a very active roost. We have had a few events at Holly Ridge among other courses in the triad. This is the Whatsapp chat where we share open spots.
NC Nesters! Golf traveling hobo who will be in Durham for the month, I’ve done a lot of the well known courses in the Pinehurst area but looking for hidden gems to hit while I am here. I’ve heard great things about UNC and Duke courses so going to hit those but any other recs or if you in the area and need a playing partner, holla at ya boy. Willing to travel a few hours if its worth it!
Smash that First Flight link just above and ask your question in there. You will be covered up with info and will be among friends.
This guy has great taste!
Should plan to head west a bit and check out the Triad while youre here.
New to Refuge & Nest. Been in Charlotte for years and have been slowly bring golf back to live for the past couple of years. What’s the best way to get connected with the local Roost?

Anyone played Talamore recently? Was able to get an $80 tee time tomorrow around 12PM so I jumped on it as a spur of the moment kinda thing. Seems like a good course for that price but not the same experience as Pine Needles/Mid South/Mid Pines. Any tips?
You’ll have $80 of fun that’s for sure. They run a good operation over there. Good to excellent conditions. There is so much good golf down here that some are quick to ding Talamore as not having the same Sandhills vibe as other courses. Play it and have fun. (And stay out of the bunkers. They are real hazards, some with 10’ or more revetted faces).
Course is in great shape. Greens rolled as true as any you’ll find. Great facilities as well. Overall, I’d give it an 8.2. A high quality course, but not necessarily an interesting course.
I was definitely happy with the experience for what I paid, but I wouldn’t pay $150 to play there. A class above most courses, but a class below several of its neighbors with more interesting layouts.
Visiting Asheville for the holiday weekend and have a chance to play Country Club of Asheville. Any reviews would be greatly appreciated.
No review but go play it for all of us that have longed for a chance to play
