āMust-hitā in Asheboro is a very rarely used phrase. Born and raised there, parents still live there. Only place I would add to the previously recommended would be Magnolia 23 if youāre looking for a little more traditional southern or soul food.
I ate at Americaās Roadhouse last time and it wasā¦interesting
Asheboro has come a long way in the last number of years.
For food:
Taco Loco is very good authentic Mexican.
Flying Pig is good bar food with good pizzas
Hamiltonās is a steak house that is a bit expensive but decent.
Positonoās is good Italian
The Table is great for lunch. Good local foods.
Magnolia 23 is fantastic southern cooking. Fried chicken is very good.
Time Square is good, fast Italian. More of a pizza joint with some other options.
For drinks:
Four Saints is the only local brewery. Itās very good.
Next door, just opened is The Pharmacy. Specialty cocktails.
Leoās Whiskey bar is decent.
Lumina is a popular wine bar.
All these options are downtown. Parking is in bicentennial park and walk from there.
Iām hearing very good things about the Tot Hill Farm Reno. I havenāt played it since the work. Itās hard for me to pay $135 when I used to pay $50 as a local resident.
wait WTF? its $135 now?
Yep. $115 greens fee. $20 cart fee.
They put a large amount of money into it. Redid all the cart paths. All greens changed to Zoysia. Most tee boxes redone and some new tees added. 100s of trees removed. New club house.
They are trying to make it into a destination course banking on people from Pinehurst to visit. They are part of Tobacco Road travel and most of the other travel companies from the area that specialize in golf trips.
the bottom explains most of it. The bones to a cool ass course are most certainly still there, but that place is never going to play easy like some of the other Stranz courses imo.
Greens had to stop being bent, that is 100% the right move. Shame the little double wide trailer clubhouse is gone lol.
Iām guessing that will be a rare play for you all down that way, so many other solid courses to be played for 1/3 to 1/2 that around yall.
Exactly this. I used to play THF 5-10 times a year for $35-$50. Now it will be a 1-2 times a year. I applaud what they did, and I hope it works, but getting people to stop to play on their way in or out of Pinehurst/Myrtle Beach, might be a tough sell. This course needs to survive because there is a finite number of Strantz courses, but at $135 Iām concerned it wonāt.
The real sad part is they all require so much extra care compared to a normal 18 hole muni that $135 for that place to be in pristine shape is probably not enough.
This is really helpful, thanks!
Absolute must hit: Glaze King Doughnuts. Get the Apple Fritter, which is roughly the size of a hubcap.
Phoenix Friend coming into Charlotte for work. Planning on staying in the downtown area but will move if yāall know a better spot. Probably will not get a chance to play any golf.
But looking for recommendations on restaurants, coffee shops and breweries/taprooms I should check out while I am in.
cabo fish taco and cowfish are my charlotte favorites when traveling
Tot hill is a sheetz biscuit compared to being able to play at Biscuitville
How long will you be in town for?
Hotel wise Uptown is probably the move, especially if thatās where youāll have to be for work. You can take the light rail to either Southend or Optimist Park/Villa Heights/NoDa. Short uber to Plaza Midwood as well.
Short list of breweries you could check out:
Wooden Robot (either location)
Legion (plaza midwood)
Burial (plaza midwood)
Suffolk Punch
Birdsong
Resident Culture
Coffee (not my forte):
Night Swim
The Hobbyist
The Southend location of Wooden Robot just opened a coffee bar as well
Restaurants (depends how fancy you want to get):
Ever Andalo
Yunta
Haberdish
The Crunkleton
Customshop
Calle Sol
Noble Smoke
Bird Pizzeria
Salud Cerveceria (beer shop/coffee house/pizza and wings all in one)
Optimist Hall has a bunch of food stalls if that interests you
Growlers Pourhouse
Awesome these recs are absolutely amazing. This is why I love the refuge. Highly looking forward to some of these restaurants
Coming for a week to support some equipment testing and Quality Assurance at a vendor site.
Currently eyeing the Homewood Suites in Uptown/1st Ward. That seems to fit the area. Let me know if I am off.
Smokey Mtn CC and Sequoyah National.
Someone give me some info on these tracks, are they worth taking a group of 16 to do our annual ryder cup there? Last 2 years has been pinehurst and Kiawah. Looking for a little mtn golf.
Main things for us are, courses are close, we donāt want to be driving around much.
And Mostly are the courses good/nice. We like to play good courses.
Iām assuming lodging wont be an issue with Harrahās etc. Casino is a nice addition for us, but not the reason for the visit.
what time of year are you going?
Should be fine, though itās sort of just on the edge of where stuff is happening within Uptown. Second and Third Ward hotels might be my preference, but hopefully youāre not spending too much time in the hotel.
Let us know when you get here, happy to meet up for a beer after work one day, can probably get a couple of us together. You can hop in our WhatsApp chat for the week if you want.
