Roll Call: North Carolina

It seems I’m moving to Charlotte this fall. After some google searches, it looks like joining a club is an extremely expensive endeavor with long wait lists. What kind of community does the refuge have down there or are there are any decent joining options for a junior member?

I had back spasms as I was finishing a cycle of chemo a couple of years ago. Debilitating, if I’m being honest. I couldn’t lay flat in any position in bed. Slept in a recliner on a heating pad for a month. My Oncologist sent me to physical therapy. The therapists literally sent me this video and said “do this every morning when you get out of bed.”

It was a terrible couple of days getting started but I haven’t had a single spasm since February 2021. I still do this every morning. Caution, these guys are a bit gooberish but the methods work.

That is correct.

An active and growing one! Once you’re down here we’d love to get you involved in our Roost.

There are some more realistic and affordable options outside the 485 loop and surrounding suburbs of Charlotte - Cabarrus Country Club, Pine Island, Rolling Hills, Fort Mill & Springfield south of the border, CC of Salisbury (45 minutes from the north side of town), and we’ve got a couple Charlotte residents that are members at Mimosa Hills out in Morganton.

I’m a member at Raintree Country Club here in town. I don’t really know what the waitlist/initiation situation currently is, but the monthly dues for under 40 are I think about $330/month.

Public golf is pretty bleak around town, but like Tim said there’s a handful of courses that are in that 45 minute to an hour range that are pretty good and you might be able to snag an out of town membership there.

Thanks for the info! As someone new to the refuge and this part of the country, what does the roost entail for you guys? Is it a somewhat regular game on weekends, 9 on weeknights, events, or all the above?

All of the above, some number of members are typically meeting and playing together every weekend around the area. We do have some weekday players as well.

We just put out our full 2023-2024 season structure and planned events schedule, right now it’s in the Roost specific section of the Refuge, which we can get you access to. Aside from the planned events, we run a monthly quota game for points that go towards our season-long competition.

@Deven75 can get you access to the Queen City Hive section of the Refuge. Can also get you looped into our group WhatsApp chat

How do you like Raintree? Exploring club options but have never played there before. I understand 2 courses. How’s the pool?

It’s fine? I don’t really use it much, but folks with families do. Seems to always be fairly busy during the summer, not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

This is neither here nor there but I have known the head professional at Pine Island since the day he was born. Old family friends. His parents live down the street from me and I bought his grandmothers house in 2016.

I just moved here and joined Skybrook in Huntersville. The junior membership is super affordable, but I believe the waitlist is upwards of a year.

Can you talk to him about their requirement to pay cart fee if you walk during certain hours. (I kid…kinda)

I’ll ask him about it next time I see him. I would imagine the management company that runs the club sets those policies but I don’t know.

Going to Ashville this upcoming weekend. Anyone good recs on where to play? Anyone want to play Saturday AM?

Is there a long wait list? I put in an info request last week and haven’t heard back

For Pine Island? I have no clue. I live a couple hours away.

Edit to add: Sam is 35 year old with an old soul. Never had a cell phone or social media. I can’t just text him to find out the answers to these questions. I’ll see him at some point pretty soon.

Driving out to Tot Hill Farm in a few weeks and planning to stay overnight nearby. Any must-hit restaurants or bars in the area?

we usually hit the zoo around there lol

Can you take some pics and a current review for us from tot?

@grizzly224

Definitely will. Playing TR the day before too. Unfortunately I’ve never played Tot Hill so I can’t speak to whether the renovations are impactful or not.

If tot hill has playable greens, fairways, and tee boxes all 18 holes thats a major upgrade from where its been.

I love Mike Stranz but the dude makes courses that are a major PIA to maintain
