Roll Call: North Carolina

I don’t think Tot Hill is a must and that’s coming from someone who’s favorite course may well be Tobacco Road. If you’re driving through Raleigh on your way home, you could hit up Lonnie Poole.

Welcome!!! We have a thriving group of Charlotte guise who fit the same profile you do! Always happy to tee it up at all the places you mentioned…and even some you didn’t! Shoot, i’ll even tee it up at Harry Jones (GASP!!!).

You should check out our CLT WhatsApp chat.

Ahh man, had a LOT of great memories out at ol’ Renny. I haven’t played out there in prob two years and have heard its really rough lately. When I need to get my Strapped muni fix, I’ve always thought Chuck T was a fun course and ever since they redid the greens a few years ago, you can catch it in really good shape in the spring and fall. I’m always looking for someone to play the random mid week round with.

That’s great to hear since we will be hitting up that course when we fly in!

Pretty repetitive but as others have said it’s worth playing but I wouldn’t say it’s a must by any means. That $30 rate is really good. I don’t like it and compared to TR it’s terrible IMO. Just a shitty version of TR. But if it’s on the way somewhere I would recommend experiencing it. If you’re going through rdu it’s out of the way so there’s probably other more convenient courses.

As you can see THF is very polarizing. As a huge advocate for the course this is the last thing I will say…if you are a fan of Strantz and have played other courses of his, it is a must play, especially when you take into account he only has 6 public courses.

If you do end up deciding to play THF and you play it after TR…DO NOT compare it to TR. It is not the same course, nor was it designed to be. Comparing it to TR will only negatively impact your view of THF.

I’ve played some god awful layouts, some god awful conditions, and been screwed over hard but for $29 its worth showing up to check off Mike stranz again. I love the dude but this maybe his weakest layout work.

LMAO! i grew up on that course and thats probably why i didnt play golf until after college. its a fun course if you like having to sweat every shot being 5 yards offline is out of bounds and greens that were built to be bent that transitioned to bermuda.

Oh okay, awesome! If you do decide to play THF, don’t take the round too serious. Just laugh at some of the ridiculousness and the unlucky breaks. For $30, you can certainly play a lot worse courses. Just do not go in with the expectations that it’s going to be comparable to Tobacco Road. Have you considered playing Tobacco Road a second time on your trip? Maybe that could be your final round before you head out. Especially if you’ve never played it before, it is a course that most people enjoy/understand more the more times they play it.

We are hitting TR up on our last day of our guys tourney early AM then hoping to replay it shortly after if there is room. Heard from a lot of ppl it’s a great course to double up on.

I’m going to be driving from charlotte over to oak island, is there anywhere I should stop at and play on my way? Don’t have time to go up to TR, area. Just seeing what may be in the way. Or I’ll get straight to the coast and play there. I think either thurs or fri I will be able to play 18 near oak island/Wilmington/my. Anyone in the area want to play let me know. I want to try out cape fear.

You couldn’t be more spot on. I was a member there most of 2020 before deciding to leave. Course can be fun in the summer though, as long as you love pain. We just found the membership to be a little backward & not the most welcoming place.

I am not familiar with courses near Wilmington and Oak Island (which needs to change) but you will not be far from Cheraw State Park in SC on your way. I absolutely love the Tom Jackson design at the state park. Definitely worth a stop and play.

Wife’s family lives in Hartsville. Will have to check it out

Looks like Cheraw Country Club is a $29 Donald Ross

Not worth it. I believe the front is only a Ross and the course is usually in horrible shape.

Don’t do it!

Takes Chris’s advice and go to the state park across the street. Morees Cheraw CC was surprisingly bad.

Amazingly bad.

Hi all - does anyone have the particulars on the Charlotte What’s App they wouldn’t mind passing along?
