Roll Call: North Carolina

Do you mind me asking what section of Raleigh you’re in? We’re going to rent before deciding if we like the city enough to buy and we looked at some buildings in a few different neighborhoods and now trying to decide where to live.

Thanks, check the DM @stevenst

I followed up in the DMs

Thank you all for the advice so far!

I’m currently in graduate school for statistics. The potential move would happen right after I graduate. I had an internship last summer doing predictive modeling that went really well. I’m hoping they offer me a full-time remote job but we’ll see. My girlfriend is in pharmacy school, and when/if we move to NC she’ll be starting her year of “rotations” where she basically moves around a bunch of different pharmacies and hospitals for a year.

I agree. Can’t attest directly to the Charlotte negatives, but wholeheartedly agree with the Triangle being the preferred spot. I’ve lived in most cites along I-40 from Winston-Salem to Raleigh (Burlington, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, W-S, Durham and Raleigh). If I were in my mid-20s, I’d pick Raleigh for its broad offerings in food, nightlife and activities. It’s a bit more conservative/cliquey and probably more expensive across the options. Durham is a bit more raw, has a sordid past and is still trying to figure out who it wants to be in the future. I live in Durham now and appreciate the entrepreneurial vibe I get from most of the people I know around here. I think it has more “culture” and we can’t forget the awesome minor league baseball team. Chapel Hill/Carrboro would be on the more liberal side and even into the hipster territory in certain parts (though Raleigh certainly has a hipster contingent as well). In the “Triad” - Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point, I’d selfishly pick Winston-Salem over the rest. The downtown has been completely transformed over the past 20 years and is one of my favorite places to visit. Hope that helps!

agreed, Winston is the best city of the Triad and its not even close IMO…ive lived in GSO and currently live in HP

As you can see @Waldorf98 we are all very passionate about our cities so I do not believe you can go wrong no matter where you end.

One option is to live in Pinehurst, and have an hour commute to the pharmacy rotation. There are pharmacies closer to PH, of course.

Upon suggesting this to your GF you may need to quickly duck - but it is an option!

mind if I ask a couple pointed questions about membership there?

I-40 and US-1 through Raleigh are a headache at rush hour, but I know they have done a ton of work to 40 over the past few years and US-1 jams can be avoided if you know which direction the traffic flows in the AM/PM. I grew up around and lived in Raleigh until about 5 years ago when I moved to Greensboro, I would say traffic is maybe a bit worse around Raleigh, but if you go the wrong route around GSO at rush hour it’ll be just as bad. Just seems like we have more room to expand around GSO than Raleigh does.

As for the golf scene, my opinion that Greensboro area has better public golf than Raleigh. Don’t get me wrong there are still some great courses in the Raleigh area, but they’re more spread out, and if you’re on the wrong side of town be prepared to drive. Where I live now I can get to 6 public facilities within 20 minutes, 2 of which have 2 courses.

One thing I miss about living in Raleigh is being close to The Club Guy, if I need work done to clubs I still drive to see Curtis. Overall between the two towns I think I do prefer Raleigh slightly more, but that could be partly nostalgia having grown up there and attended State. Not really my scene anymore but Raleigh’s downtown nightlife is more lively, some really great restaurants and bars I miss, the museums are fantastic, big event venues are there, perks of being the state capitol.

@Waldorf98 - Do you know which AHEC she’ll be assigned to?

Guys, I am doing the Mid Pines/Pine Needles/Southern Pines golf package Dec. 27-29, if anyone happens to be on site those days, would love to meet up with some new folks!

I have my morning rounds set: Pine Needles at 8 a.m. on the 27th, Mid Pines at 8:05 the 28th, Mid Pines at 8:15 the 29th as my only round before heading out.

Thinking Southern Pines the afternoon of the 27th and Pine Needles the afternoon of the 28th.

I can’t wait to get up there!

FWIW…been in Charlotte for almost 5 years. I’m, ahem, a bit older with kids so a different demographic. But it’s a great place to have a family, weather is good. All the good stuff associated with big cities - 3 pro sports teams, minor league hockey and baseball, big concerts and musicals (when the whole Bathroom Bill or COVID fiascos aren’t occurring), good restaurants and bars. Big airport. When I was moving here I kept hearing complaints of the horrendous traffic, but I haven’t found it to be true. It’s all about perspective as I spent most of my life in Philly and Miami before here, so the traffic is nothing relative to them. It also kind of depends where you live. I love it here.

What info are you looking for?

it’s 2-3 years wait I know, and maybe this is a DM q/a, but what are we talking about in regards to monthly (is there a junior membership kinda thing) and is initiation due up front or once you officially join? and what is the process for getting people to sponsor you for membership?

I’m in boys, after a very nice talk with the wife. Making the day trip from Columbia, @LukeBoatright and @tres_carlos? you guys want a free ride up? Adding to the google sheet. Cant’ wait to talk kids and Disney again with @franklinorr! Love you golf nerds

Playing Firethorne with a buddy on Saturday, tee time at 11:10 and I have two slots still open if any Charlotte/Rock Hill guys can/want in. Also…what can I expect? I’ve never been.

Has anyone lived in ATL before? I am potentially moving there for work. I’d work in Norcross and was wondering good places to live near that area. I have a wife who is a teacher and two kids in day care so a good school system and day care options is important.

What time frame are you thinking of being back?
