Roll Call: North Carolina

Any reviews on Tot Hill Farm in Asheboro? Thinking about giving it a go. Saw it on the Sugarloaf hidden gems list.

its a very unusual course to say the least

not sure why its on the hidden gems list TBH as its pretty well known and garnered some national attention since its opened

designed by mike stranz who also did tobacco road here in NC, its pretty quirky. lot of blind shots, target golf, some would even call it goofy golf

the course itself is solid i think, though overall im not a huge fan and wouldnt go out of my way to play there

last time i played was last labor day, they were out of range balls by like 815 am and none of the coolers on the course had water in them, even though it was 90+ degrees outside

the greens were super soft and spongy when i played last, didnt feel like they were in that great of condition personally…fairways were meh

its definitely a different kind of golf course

good to know…not sure the drive is worth it to just play then

to me somewhere like asheboro muni is a course thats more deserving of being on the hidden gems list as its an old donald ross course built back in like the 30’s…its only 9 holes, but super cheap and hell, its a donald ross

asheboro CC is another one that i was pleasantly surprised by, especially for the price…its another older course, like the 50’s maybe? i played it last year for like $19

tot hill is one of those places you either love it or you hate it…personally, i lean more towards the hate it side, but im sure there are others out here that would say the opposite

rock walls, rock bunkers just off the greens, creeks that come out of no where, elevation changes, blind shots, etc…it helps to have some knowledge of the course, but even then it can be a bit frustrating IMO

i am more of a what you see is what you get kind of guy and to me tot hill is full of fuckery

where do you live?

gotcha. currently live in winston

ah, well its not that bad of a drive then…its worth checking out i guess, i dont want to discourage you from playing it cause who knows you might love it

where do you play around winston?

The usual suspects here, Tanglewood, Oak Valley, Salem Glen, Bermuda Run CC through Club Corp every now and then

nice…if you ever make it over toward HP/GSO lemme know…im always looking to play

looking to play this evening as a matter of fact

If you love Tobacco Road then you will probably like Tot Hill, but if you don’t like Tobacco Road then you will like Tot Hill even less

Was planning to play Tot Hill this weekend but plans changed. Had some buddy’s play there last week as the first leg of their annual trip and they all said its in good condition compared to other times we have played it.

If you can catch one of the Saturday or sunday times for $32 and its not a haul for you then it is absolutely worth it in my opinion. And going off what @Fore20 said, it is definitely different and has that Stranz quirk to it. Worth playing at least once and then see how you feel about it. I’m hooked and try to get back as often as possible from the Raleigh area

i agree, if you are in WS then its definitely worth the drive to play at least once

ive played it twice and that was enough for me i think

so @country35 and i were gonna play UNC on 8/21, but come to find out they are punching their greens 12-15, so going to skip that

raleigh guys, where else should we consider?

i live in GSO and buddy who is in Cary is going to be joining us…ideally id be nice to stay on the west half of raleigh

I’ve heard that Lochmere in Cary has been in great shape lately. But it has rained quite a bit lately and tends to not drain well. It’s a little further west than Cary but Chapel Ridge near Jordan Lake is an awesome course and pretty reasonably priced

One more opinion in favor of Tot Hill. I’ve played there close to 20 times and that course gets better and better every time. You learn something new with every round. It is visually intimidating but once you get a few rounds under your belt you realize there is a ton of room to land the play, it just isn’t obvious from the get go. Yardage books are $5 I think and they help a lot.

It is a little rough around the edges but compared to were it was a few years ago it is in incredible shape.

I want that course to succeed more than any other course I’ve played. I hope you go there and fall in love with it.

Completely agree with @BCates. In fact, I played there last Saturday, and aced the 6th hole. So, obviously a great course.

Hole in one aside (8 iron from 156 to the back right (semi-blind) flag, if you’re curious), I really do love Tot Hill. I don’t think it could be my weekly play, but a few times per year, it is so much fun.

Did it trickle in? On the fly? Did you know it went in?

Buddy at work has had good things to say about Preserve at Jordan Lake - it’s in Durham-ish. Said it’s a tough track but fun.

The preserve is tough. Feel like i’ve never played it in good conditions though.

The Preserve is tough. It’s a love or hate type of course. It’s worth playing at least once. Chapel Ridge is a lot more fun IMO.

A good course in the middle would be Mill Creek in Mebane.
