Roll Call: New Zealand

Sweet, autumn in Central Otago is fantastic. I’ve not played Wanaka but Cromwell was fun.

Let me know when you’re going to be in Wellington, be good to get a round in. Other worthwhile courses up this way are Waikanae and Otaki, both a little further north than PBGC.

Cheers Michael. May have to postpone the trip due to potential bans on international travel unfortunately. Will definitely be heading your way soon though.

Hey all, I have just been around the South island for the last few days and I got to play Arrowtown and The Stunning Jack’s point.

I fly to Wellington tomorrow afternoon and hope to be able to play Paraparaumu on Saturday

Strange times at the moment and as it stands we’re pretty much stuck here in NZ now as we are not going to be in a position to return to Ireland as planned at the start of April.

I’m grateful for the response of the NZ government and hope that they will be able to make the decisions that keep us all as safe as possible.

We’re in a weird position at the moment but feel that we have to continue on with our plans to a point where we cant.

Keep well,

J

Hey mate,

Also played Arrowtown and Jacks Point a couple of weeks ago, loved them both.

Plenty of good courses around the lower north island, make the most of your time in NZ. Hawkes Bay would be a good idea to kill a bit of time. Plenty of wineries and could play Hastings and Cape Kidnappers.

Any questions or recommendations let me know.

Cheers

Ian

Hi,

Another NZer checking in.

I’m based in Auckland and mostly play Chamberlain Park because it suits my style (casual and very mediocre).

Very happy that it’s opening up next week, it’s been a loooooong six weeks in lockdown.

Hey guys - anyone know if the Big Cat vs Phil match will be shown on sky this weekend/Monday morning? can’t find it scheduled anywhere. Cheers

How was the first round back? CP would have been busy!

First round back was at L3, so bookings from members only, which meant it wasn’t too busy. But when we went to L2 … ye gods … it was an absolute zoo.

What did surprise me was how rough the course was. Almost like they had done no maintenance over lockdown (even though it was permitted for the last fortnight).

It’ll be back to normal in a couple of weeks I’m sure.

Our rough was really long to start with, and coupled with heaps of autumn leaves, it was pretty much drop another one if you missed the fairway. Fairways, tee boxes and greens were good though, and they have things pretty much back to normal condition-wise now.

Bumping this up - planning a long weekend to Auckland at the end of August, hoping to play Muriwai, Titirangi, and Akarana (I get a reciprocal there)…any members of those three there would love to meet up!

Nice one - I’ll be in Taupo/Rotorua for 10 days starting next weekend, likewise HMU if anyone’s keen for a wander

Hey fellas,

high handicapper from Wellington usually battling around berampore, always looking to play more and sick of trying to unsuccessfully indoctrinate my friends into the TC way. let me know if anyone is keen to hit the olde goat track

Reporting in on my central North Island odyssey. I was allowed to play 4 rounds in 6 days which is a hell of a return given there’s a 1yo in the mix.

Lakeview and Springfield in Rotorua, and two rounds at Wairakei (tournament). Lakeview is definitely worth the short drive out of town. Everyone gets the horn for Arikikapakapa (the thermal course as you come into the city from Taupō) but it’s a boring up and back slog IMO with only the last four or five holes utilising the natural features.
Lakeview has, unsurprisingly, some great views of the lake, and is pretty undulating, with some excellent par 4s. There’s a couple of reachable 5s as well, particularly the 11th alongside the road. Excellent greens even for midwinter and the fairways drain well.

Springfield is a different kettle of fish. You can see why Danny Lee’s a good iron player - there’s about a billion trees and some of the fairways are pretty narrow. I think I hit four drivers all day, and all four were a gamble! Again, good conditioning and true greens. It’s a creative layout, even though a few holes on the front are a little up-and-back - but they make good use of their land.

Everyone knows Wairakei - a big resort-style course set in a wildlife sanctuary. They’ve bounced back spectacularly from last year’s incident, where weedkiller somehow got mixed in with their fertilizer. Not sure they ever got to the bottom of that, but the new greens are incredible. Scary fast even on a damp day in August: I don’t think I’ve ever been disgusted at under-hitting a putt so often, only to see it go four feet past. 77 points over two days was enough to score runner-up in my division (12-20 HC) damn that missed four footer on 8!

@RoskoNLU we should get out sometime, pretty much limited to nine on Sundays until winter sport finishes next month, but let’s get amongst.

First post on here. Based in Hawke’s Bay. Anyone floating into town on holiday for a hit or making a specific trip to cape let me know. Always keen to squeeze in a hit if I can.

Welcome mate. My family is all in Hawkes Bay, mum plays at Bridge Pa and my nephews at Hawkes Bay. Once these borders open up I will be over for a trip and we can organise a hit.

Where are you a member?

Epic. I’m a member at Maraenui.

Another kiwi, good stuff. My Mum’s building in that new subdivision over the stream, so will probably be up for a few days over Xmas/NY. Definitely keen for a round. Likewise hit me up if you’re down Wellington way.

Nice. Il be out of town 23-27th but always keen for a hit outside of that.
