Roll Call: New Orleans

Ok a bit of a long explanation here, but I’ve been trying to purchase holiday offers for TPC Louisiana for me and a buddy since freaking Black Friday. Couldn’t just purchase online, they called me a few days later but I didn’t recognize the number. Then they emailed saying they couldn’t reach me and I’ve gone online and called the number for sales and marketing lady at least 6-8 times since. Can I make arrangements for anyone to make this purchase for me in person? I’m in Lake Charles and can pay via PayPal or Venmo and include extra for shipping whatever comes with the purchase(should be two vouchers and two shoe bags). Just hoping someone on here might be able to help me out, if they’re even still doing the deal at this point…

If you call and see if they are still running the deal I can swing by next time I’m down there.

Hey fellas. I’ve been a lurker on this site for a little while now but I figured it was time to say hello! I’m a Birmingham, AL native, but my wife and I moved down to Nola almost two years ago for her residency at Ochsner. I started playing golf last summer, and I am fully addicted. I quickly bought an annual membership at City Park and played as much golf as possible, but I’ve had to take the last few months off to get over some tennis elbow. Needless to say, I’m itching to get back on the course again.

I just finished reading through this thread and learned so much about New Orleans golf. I’ve played City Park, Audubon, and Joey B but haven’t played anywhere else. I now have TPC, LaTour, and Oak Harbor on my shortlist. Anyway, I’m not sure if a meetup has already happened, but I’d be interested in playing a few rounds with you all if you don’t mind a high handicapper hacking their way around the course. I usually shoot in the 90s but plan to break into the 80s this spring.

Welcome to the suck! I’m always down to play. Used to have a lot more flexibility, but with the new job most of my play is limited to the weekends. I live in Covington, but can meet up pretty much anywhere in the area.

A player with the goal of breaking 90 would do well to work Lakewood into the rotation. Very forgiving tee to green but with green complexes that are challenging, especially lately with the green speeds.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve heard some good things about Lakewood, so I’ll definitely add it to the list!

Also, do y’all have any thoughts on the best practice facilities in the area? I’d like to find a good short game practice area where I can chip and work out of bunkers. City Park doesn’t have anything. TIA

Lakewood has a good practice area for a course that is public. Can’t remember if they have bunkers around the chipping green. Someone else may be able to shine better light on that.

I used to go out to Cypress Lakes (aka Ormond) in Destrehan and practice on Sunday evenings. Most evenings you can get out there and it is not too crowded. It’s pricey for what the course is, but that fee is good for playing extra holes in the afternoon. Used to go out there and take over a hole on the back 9 and just hit balls from different ranges. Make friends with the kids in the pro shop and you’re golden.

Lakewood has a good short game area, including bunkers. However, they don’t have enough space for drivers, etc. Whenever you can get a good rate at English Turn it’s worth spending extra time there at their facility. Same is true of TPC, though their green fee specials haven’t been as chartiable as of late.

Hey guys, long time lurker here as well but figured I might as well chime in now since it appears we are starting to get some traffic on the New Orleans board. My advice would be to stay away from English Turn right now as the course (mainly greens) is in terrible shape. Actually thinking about making the switch over to Lakewood soon.

Anyways, let me know if y’all ever wanna meet up and play.

I agree about the greens at English Turn. The only issue about Lakewood right now, is it is getting a lot of rounds from the members from MCC while our course in under renovation. We are playing all over the place, but that is one of the easier courses to get a large group so some of the money games are playing there.

I’ve been playing some of the private reciprocals and courses in MS and when I mentioned to the pro that if we couldn’t get a good time at my course of choice on Saturday that I would take a time at Lakewood he told me they had a group of 24 players out there already and I might consider a different course as a back up option (which turns out I didn’t need). So, just a head’s up, though those guys typically don’t hold up pace of play.

Yea they had a large group of MCC guys out at English Turn last weekend but pace of play was fine. How long are the renovations to that place supposed to take?

Supposed to be done around September/October. It has been amazing how much they’ve done in less than a month; already have the double plateau and redan greens formed. The construction and. drainage should keep humming along with good weather and not tons of heavy rain. Then, we have to grow the new grass. But, supposed to be ready to open late September. I’m hoping we open with the Member-Member or some kind of tournament. It would be a lot of fun to have a tournament with a vastly different course that none of us are familiar with yet.

My buddy is a member out there. Got to play for the renovation started (s/o to the club for the discounted beers that Sunday). I’ve played out there a bunch now so I am pretty excited to see how much it changes.

David Marchand is putting progress on instagram and twitter if you want to see how it progresses.

I’ll check it out. I got the first drone video, but haven’t gotten the second one forwarded to me yet.

It’s not out yet, should probably be the next week or so. Will be vastly different, they’ve moved a lot of earth around already. Who is your buddy out there if you don’t mind me asking? You can tell me discreetly if you don’t want to share it here.

What’s up Logan? I just moved to Monroe actually and have been looking for some guys to play golf with who have the same interest In the sport that I do. Also, doesn’t seem like there are many public courses around, so I was going to ask for a couple recommendations on private clubs. Thanks hope to hear from you soon.

Awesome! Where did you move from? There’s some good food spots in Monroe that you’ll enjoy. Yeah the public scene isn’t great. Chennault Park is the best public track in Monroe but its not great by any means, Forsythe Park is a big time beater course where you just go out there barefoot. There’s also Black Bear in Delhi, its like a 45 minute drive from Monroe, but its a really good public track in the area. Big greens and tons of land movement. Its part of the Audubon golf trail so they always have it in pretty decent shape. Mystic Creek is by far the best public option, its in El Dorado, Ar so its about 1hr and 15 minutes from Monroe but worth the drive, its extremely long but extremely pure. Insanely fast greens and tons of big land movement. Its about 85 a round on the summer weekends but the replay rate is like 30 bucks so for 100 bucks you can play all day. As for as private, Frenchman’s Bend advertises as a country club but its open to the public and relatively cheap to play or join. Its like 50 bucks to play on the weekend. And if you wanted to join depending on your age its like 150-250 a month and a couple hundred initiation. Its an okay course, it used to be really good and has since run down, its just a normal neighborhood course. If you are out towards Calhoun, there’s Calvert Crossing and it just switched to private. They will waive the down payment if you want to join, and depending on age its 150-275. The course is a ton of fun, a lot of slightly forced carries and quirk and land movement and the playing surfaces are always in good shape and sometimes great shape but if you are off the fairway you are out of luck cause its just trees and dirt. The other course is Bayou Desiard in Monroe and its private and it has a bigger initiation at 8k and due between 200-330. Bayou is the best in Monroe for sure, its a Perry Maxwell built in 1948 and it got redone recently, its the full CC experience and people there are obsessed with golf. If you want even more, there’s Squire Creel in Choudrant, its about a 35-40 minute drive from Monroe and it is the ultimate CC experience, its a Tom Fazio and there’s not a blade of grass out of place, amazing amenities and it has the edge over Desiard for pureness and size. They run a 10k initiation and 240-420 monthly dues.

I know that may be info overload but if you want, I can always elaborate more on certain clubs, I’ve played them all and have opinions on them all!

Moved from Atlanta. Definitely different lol

Uhhh, I’d say so…lol new job?
