Been there brother
It was about 7,450 I think. Not all the way back on 5 or 7 (like not the boxes they built way back in the desert). 11 was up on the left upper tee box - that’s a very cool angle into the green. 15 they moved it about 25y forward to really tempt players to go for it. Otherwise mostly back tees, including 8 they played at the full 270 slightly into the wind. They played 8 off the blue tee in 2022.
15 is great - we were only in a twosome; other guy hit driver pin high left and made par. My friend hit 6i, pw and made his 15 footer. If driver was working more he’d have sent it up to the right edge of the green but we decided to stick to the plan rather than yolo it even with his score at that point.
Went 6i off of 15 tee as in the practice round (slightly more down wind but further back) his 4i hit the downslope ridge thing in the middle of the fairway and scooted all the way under the big tree that blocks the green). Very cool and fun hole!
Also - while we discuss NM - is Pinyon Hills good? I remember seeing something once that Dylan Dethier loved it but my friend is meh on it… I generally come to Durango once or twice a year and have had it on my “at some point I need to get there” list - how much of a priority should that be?
I’m in the same boat here. I’ve heard generally good things but not from sources I really trust. One day! Maybe.
I have an open spot to join @BrysonsLats, myself, and my dad at Marty Sanchez next Friday 8/11 at 11am. Projected high is only 90!
Dropping in to invite anyone and everyone to the first Dry Heat GC event of the 2024 season. Competition day will be Saturday 11/4 in Albuquerque with additional optional golf Friday and Sunday. Basic sign up sheet is below. Hit me with DMs to learn more. A valid handicap index is required to compete but anyone can play for fun.
The main day will be an 18 hole round at Ladera Golf Course on the west side of ABQ. Then we will head over to the delightful 9 hole University of New Mexico North Course for match play. The first loop will determine the event winner and final standings, and we will plan to have time for a second loop for those interested. We will have to make a quick turn to avoid darkness so I am going to find a way to get burritos or other lunch food to the course between rounds. There will be a modest entry fee for a charitable donation and lunch, probably in the $30 range. Green fees will be $32 (plus $16.50 cart) at Ladera, and $21 (plus $12 cart) at UNM (and a very cheap replay rate).
Hey @RolandOfGilead and all other fellow ABQ’ers… someone wake up these Isotopes, they’re sleepwalking tonight in El Paso…
Sorry, super blurry but it’s 5-1 top of the 5th
Freaking love going to the Chihuahuas games. Stumbled into The Tap Bar after the game and a few drinks at one of the downtown hotels and had probably the best chile colorado I’ve ever had. Was not expecting that when we walked in.
Things got a little exciting at the end. I’m not sure of his age or # of kids but the Isotopes’ 3rd baseman is definitely interested in fighting.
Benches were cleared but no actual punches were thrown. Should be a fiery final home series this weekend.
Coming down from altitude ain’t easy.
Ok… so after seeing just a few picture from the ACU gold insta I now have to get out to the NMSU golf course… looks like a great time!
Let me know if you do and I’ll join you. IMO, of our three public courses, NMSU is the least interesting.
Figured I would pop in here and get recommendations from the locals: Me and the fiance are spending a long weekend in ABQ in January and we have time for two rounds. One I know will be Black Mesa (trying to check off Golf Digest Top 100 Public), but the other I am in between either Sandia or the UNM course (or if there is another hidden gem I missed in research). From my understanding, Paako Ridge is closed for the season (looks like until May 1?)
Also looking for any good places to eat, drink, or explore. Our only definitive plans is the Tom Segura show late Friday night, aside from that Friday-Sunday is wide open for exploring the area. Thanks!
You’ll get lots of great recs from the guys that live there, but my wife and I had a great time just spending an afternoon at the Old Town Plaza grabbing drinks and looking through all the art galleries and shops. We ended up bringing two pieces back to Las Cruces from different galleries.
@C_Avery2 (I think I forgot to quote you)
In town, I think you hit the two best options. I would steer you towards Sandia as it is a more resort style course and has better scenery. UNM South is more of a classic championship style course - winter is the best time to play it though IMO because the rough isn’t crazy - and doesn’t have the panoramic mountain views Sandia has.
Black Mesa is a can’t-miss. Just check the weather to make sure the ground won’t be frozen. Generally I would try to tee off as late as possible while having enough daylight to finish a round (noon-ish). This can be tough to nail down with variable frost delays though. Probably best to check with the course a few days out to make a good plan.
If you have to drop BM for any reason, check out Santa Ana (30 mins north of ABQ) or Ladera (west side of town) as backups. Ladera gets the earliest sun in the morning and is most likely to thaw out in the case of low temperatures. It’s a simple muni but has great views of the Sandia and Manzano mountains to the east and south. UNM North is the local favorite 9 holer in the center of town, if you have extra time. Everyone I’ve taken there has fallen head over heels.
Awesome, thanks! Right now my tee time at Black Mesa is at noon Saturday, I definitely was airing on the later side with us having tickets to the late show Friday night, but didn’t want to flirt with darkness so hopefully it will not be too bad. Obviously we are 3 weeks out, but the tee sheet was wide open all day at BM, so even if there is a frost delay hopefully it won’t be too packed
Eat at El Patio - really awesome new mexican food.
Walked an evening nine at NMSU today. Was cool and breezy but not as bad as it could have been. The Organs, as always, delivered.
Hey dudes, what do we think of Twin Warriors? Just “happened” to have my sticks with me on this trip and looked around to see if I could find something tomorrow, $54 for an afternoon time seems pretty cheap? Course looks pretty nice on their website.
EDIT: Hah! Did you know you can search phrases within a topic? What a maroon! Seems like the general opinion is it’s fine.
I’d steer you towards Santa Ana or Isleta for that tier of courses. I’ll let the locals (since I’m not one anymore lol) chime in on the course conditions of em these days
