We’re only a couple spots shy from making The Barn Burner at Kenny Perry’s our largest event in @HighCottonClub history… reach out and #getinvolved!
do you think it would ever really go private?
not surprising the projects are happening. i drive by it daily and they have part of the short range closed to repair the grass and it looks like they lifted all the turf off the back of the range where you’d hit off of mats.
what are your thoughts on the course in general? some of those greens were in rough shape last time i played and a lot of slanted tee boxes. the work they’ve done so far is good but this feels like a step in the right direction.
They grew a strong base membership when the new ownership group came in. Whether they were pushed out due to rising fees, or fed up with stuff, a bunch of folks at Bluegrass and Tennessee Grasslands went over there. With the expansion of Nashville, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were able to build enough members over the next few years in their semi-private model to end up going fully private – given the improvements they make are what we hope they are
Although I’m not a fan of courses that run through neighborhoods, I think it’s one of the best layouts in Middle TN, and adequately represents some of the best that golf in our area has to offer. Do I love everything? Not by any means, but I’m a fan overall. When I first worked there, you would lose your ball mark in the aeration holes on the green, so it’s awesome to see it improve.
I wanted to thank everyone for the suggestions from earlier but we had a slight change in plans and need a little more advice. My youngest brother had a last minute work event that will cause him to arrive a day later. Good news is we were able to get Sweetens passes for Thursday 2/23 so he will still get to take in Sweetens for the whole day vs just a couple hours of daylight. His flight gets into BNA at around noon on 2/22. He won’t have to wait for bags or anything as my dad is picking up his clubs on the way down so he can just get off the plane and we pick him right up. Is Presidents Reserve at Hermitage worth $30+ more than generals retreat? Looking at their online system they had a deal for Generals
Yes, if you are only going to play one, Play Prez.
Retreat is still alright, but the routing is a bit cooky and I’d high recommend a hard hat and other PPE as it’s crammed in there
Overall still a solid place. A bit on expensive side but the staff is friendly and both courses always in good shape.
Lots of renovations going on in and around Nashville it seems like.
The aforementioned 12 Stones work
Brentwood CC (woof) doing mostly drainage work.
ONCC is starting a tee box reno/relo, some cart path re-routes, and some bunker work.
Didn’t see it here yet but Percy Warner is getting a major face lift. I really hope this lands as it’s where I learned to play golf and would love to get back there as my son gets closer to an age to start swinging a club. I’m skeptical that they are not taking out enough trees but the bigger greens and tees sound appealing.
Oh and Gaylord is doing more dumb shit that will raise rates and not help playability. Absurd capital project replacing the bulk head on 15 fairway. I cannot remember the last time I played this place and didn’t have an alternate routing or converted temporary hole
I know nothing about re-routing holes or anything golf course related but could 12 stones move to a par 70 and blow up hole #14 (which as I have mentioned in previous posts is just a terrible golf hole)? Maybe they could even sell more housing plots to fund the renovation. Basically, it seems like they would have to break up the current #12 (currently a par 5) and change it into a short 4 using the creek and then an uphill par 3. Something like this? You can’t change the current #14 into a par 3 because then you would back to back par 3s. I don’t know maybe I am way off base here.
HCCers: another refugee, myself, and 1 or 2 other friends are gonna be playing park mammoth on the 18th if all goes as planned. Just curious if there’s anything weird/quirky/fun we should know before arriving. Is there a range to warm up? Anything super cool in the area we should do/see? We’re driving down from NW Ohio, and planning to go out for food and drinks in east Nashville after, so may not have a ton of extra time, but always good to hear from locals before going somewhere new
I played there this past summer. There is a small range with free balls if you’re playing a round. No food there except candy bars and sports drinks/soft drinks. The pro shop is a small trailer. I drove up from Nashville one morning and right back, so I’m not sure what’s around there. Cool course!
To piggy back off of what @winbassett said, we played it in January and they have opened up a full range that you will see on the way in! Also, they have a decent/strange beer selection with a variety of craft and domestics at the course. They also will typically have hot dogs and chips now in the pro shop. Not to sure about other stuff in the area though.
I found a couple of good food places in Bowling Green. 440 on Main / Micki’s on Main in downtown was really good and Blaze Pizza out by the interstate was also really good.
I went out and walked around the course the other day, and it looks really good. The greens they are putting in look massive, which I like but makes me worry about upkeep. Big greens are $$$$$. The bunkering looks fantastic also. I think they are going for fewer bunkers overall, but very penal ones that will dictate strategy. The 8th, for example, looks like it is getting a lion’s mouth with a very steep face, so it will play very similar to the 5th at sweetens - a very short 4 with an extremely penal bunker that will force decision making off the tee.
The renovation is being done by Bruce Hepner who has worked on projects like Pacific Dunes, CommonGround, Old Mac, Streamsong Blue, and Cape Kidnappers with Doak. He is currently the consulting architect at Belvedere, Blue Mound, Holston Hills, Shoreacres, Cape Arundel, and others. I have full faith in him to build a fantastic 9 hole course for the city. My worries are with our parks department and whether or not it gets maintained to level it deserves post renovation. I hope they look towards Winter Park 9 and Audubon Park for inspiration and not Vinny Links…
Awesome feedback. Love the note on the bunkers. Very encouraging.
If you’re looking to eat in Bowling Green, Pub by Novo isn’t too far from exit 22 and has a nice bar area as well as excellent food. Generally lots of people in their mid to late 20’s and 30’s in the bar area. If you’re looking for a steakhouse you can do 440 which also has a bar area or Hickory and Oak which is the Bowling Green version of a high end steakhouse but also has $15 bar top specials occasionally, and if you happen to be here during baseball season the Hot Rods have a dollar beer night on Thursday nights. Being a college town there are plenty of bars to hit downtown.
Hey everyone, I purchased 2 twosome passes to Sweetens on Sunday (Feb. 19). I will only be able to use a pass for myself and a friend. Ive never been so I don’t know how easy they are to transfer. If you are interested, please reply and let me know!
I’m looking for Sunday passes
Were you able to get passes for another day? Course is going to be closed I bet
Closed through Monday for crew team practice
Fingers crossed that the water goes away by Thursday but not holding my breath.
