Roll Call: Mississippi

The best answer I could find is spring 2021. I’ve played out there quite a bit before the reno.

Me too, Millsaps guy here and we used to just get tortured out there (we weren’t exactly accurate off the tee).

Afternoon all - I’m traveling to Gulfport at the end of April for work and likely bringing my sticks along. What’s the must-play in and around town? Great Southern seems to have good bones and a pretty nice value. Worth a spin? Anything else I should put on my hit-list? Thanks my friends!

@LyingFour wrote a great article on Great Southern GC. Definitely a decent spot if you are looking to stay within Gulfport. If you don’t mind driving 15-30 minutes away, I personally would look into Grand Bear GC, Shell Landing GC, The Oaks GC, or either of the courses at Diamondhead CC. @Sergios_Landscaping is better resource than I and is always down to play.

@camdenwaydes Hello, friends! It’s that time of the year where I get to display my hard on for golf on the coast.

Luckily for you, Gulfport is the most central location to reach all of the courses that I would recommend. @JCO actually hit the nail on the head with 3 courses that I would definitely tell you to hit: Grand Bear (fookin pure), Shell Landing (angles porn) and Diamondhead (Pine course is my favorite). If it has rained a lot before you get in town, I would not recommend The Oaks. Drainage is terrible there, but the 3 aforementioned courses have great drainage. If it has not rained, then send it. The Oaks is a really fun, bang for your buck course. Has some short, gettable 4s and 5s and some really pretty 3s. My high school hosts their alumni tournament there every year. If a bunch of drunk wash outs can hammer out an under par scramble score then you can too!

Some other close ups are The Preserve or Windance. I absolutely love Windance. It’s tucked off of County Farm Road north of I-10. You really get the “middle of no where” vibes on some of the holes that do not have houses on them.

If you really want to chase the clout (and can expense it for work) get a night at the Beau Rivage and book yourself a tee time at Fallen Oak. They host the Rapiscan Systems Classic for the Champions Tour. It’s one hell of a track. Side note: Pine Course at Diamondhead is where the Monday Qs are held for the Rapiscan so you can’t go wrong with it!

Shoot me a message whenever you lock down the dates and I’ll scoot out there for some bogey golf.

Cheers,

Christian

Edit: I know nothing about Great Southern, so I defer comments to the article that JCO attached.

I live in Memphis area now but grew up in Madison. Lived on the old Northbay 9 Hole Executive Course. Anyone here remember that?

I played for my High School team and best part about that was basically being able to play at any course in the Jackson area for free if we had a tournament there at some point during the year. Our home course was Deerfield but Jackson Country Club and Colonial were always my favorite spots to play. I hope the new development there works out.

Exceptional feedback, thank you very much. Assuming this trip goes off without a hitch, I’ll be reaching out to you for sure. Thanks!

Mississippi,
I’m not technically a resident anymore, I’m 20 miles south of Woodville in St. Francisville, LA.

Always wanted to suggest this somewhere. We have a limping golf resort here called The Bluffs on Thompson Creek. **
www.the bluffs.com

It has a lodge that could house as many folks as wanted to come for like $100 per room double occupancy.
I think this could be an insanely fun place for what would be at best a poor mans version of a mini pinehurst. #Strapped
Let me be clear. It AINT pinehurst. But it’s a place that is off the charts in quirk and extremely affordable. If anyone wants to organize something here, let me know. I would help and it could be lots of fun.

5 Stars Food & Drink
5 Stars People / Hospitality
4.5 stars Accommodations
3.5 Stars Golf
Off the Charts potential good times per $ spent

**The marketing and GM asked to sit down with me earlier this year to explain golf subculture on the internet. I did my best but…
they’ve not really moved on any kind of marketing to that end.

Let me know if anyone is interested. DM me even if you reply here, I’m so bad at staying current on the refuge/nest. Or use any info on the directory to get in touch. Email/cell

Re: old waverly and mossy oak.
Should be a GREAT trip.

Re: Hattiesburg.
I lived there for 10 years. Played most at Hattiesburg CC. Just as I was moving my friend from college moved to town to help his brother run the operation. (His brother had purchased the whole thing from the members).

It’s in my top 3 all time favorite courses. Walkable, history, challenging.

Thanks, @JCO and @LyingFour by association! Awesome write up.

CC: @LivingLagunaLoca I’ll load the Traegar up. Let’s ride.

When we going?

I live here, gather a group. You get the word out and I’ll host it. you cook. We are <25 minutes from BTR airport if anyone wants to come from far.

The Bluffs got hammered by the weather recently. Let’s keep an eye on it. I probably cant do the 18th but the course back nine might not be ready anyway

Maybe weekend after next.

Hola - I’m an out of towner in Gulfport for work this weekend. Aiming to get out and play Great Southern on Thursday afternoon (?) per the advice of @JCO and @Sergios_Landscaping. Plans are somewhat fluid, but Thursday after 3:00 is probably my best bet. If you’re around and trying to peg it with a fellow Refugee, let me know!

Anybody in the greater Oxford area interested in meeting for a game at the Ole Miss course at 4:30 pm tomorrow (Friday, 4/30)? I’m in town last minute from Atlanta and snagged a foursome thinking I could fill out a couple spots with some friends who are still living in Oxford, but they have other engagements. Three open spots. I’ll cancel whatever isn’t filled around noon tomorrow.
