To be fair, I don’t think anyone expects this of me. I chose to do this and I want to do it as best I can. I am very much figuring it out as I go along.
I think some continuity is good, at least early on as we get a little more organized. I will not do this forever. '23-24 may very well be my last year, but I’m committed to that for now.
And to @GRWhitehead’s point, we charged $30 for the Points Race thing this year. Other Roosts have simply implemented a $10 event fee which would probably give us more to work with in the long run. Right now we have $630 in the coffers that I planned to use to subsidize the travel of the 4-man squad that goes to the regional. I don’t want anything we take in from our Roost to go to me - NLU “compensates” us captains with various perks anyway. I know he was kidding but it would be scummy as shit to expect anything more than that.
I have an 8:30 am tee time booked at Cedar Valley in Winona on Monday if anyone wants to join. I’ll bring the donuts. Let me know if you are interested.
I’ve been waiting to comment because as a new gui (is that the correct usage?, lol) I wanted to see the lay of the land with how these discussions go. I’ve only been to one event (the early one in Blaine, it rocked) and was one-and-done in match play (opponent was cool as hell and whooped my ass).
I am unfortunately in the “no chance I can make it this year” due to a combination of things. Basically I work late Friday and have an early Sunday obligation, and construction makes travel an absolute nightmare. Tough to do.
Anyway, I do not think there needs to be much change. Had I not had those issues, I would 100% be in. The cost is high-ish, but if it’s always in that $200-250 range that can be budgeted for. (this is all me, I know others are in different situations.)
The main thing that has me missing a lot of events, other than the overall cost of a year of golf, is the travel. I live in Lake City and the next 18-24 months (and the last eight years) have been brutal. It will take me about 35 minutes just to hit a highway in a couple weeks. So maybe that is hurting some participation from the south? And that’s to say nothing of what we hit in the Cities that most of y’all deal with all the time.
There is also the issue that outside of the loop, we seem like a pretty far-flung group. I imagine that’s why it’s a bit harder to get some buy-in around the edges.
I don’t know. Like I said, I’m new. Just an observation from a guy that wishes he could be more involved while also recognizing some issues. I love what I know of the community, and hope it stays active.
