For a guy that asked everyone for honest input it seems like you’re getting pretty upset over the fact not everyone views things the same way you do. I know better than anyone else how much work goes into putting on these events, but ultimately it’s the market that dictates participation. In this case the market is a bunch of people on a golf message board that like getting together sometimes to play.
As someone pointed out earlier, this is no longer 2020 or even 2021 where people were sticking close to home. Life has moved on, other things get in the way and the absence of a real big hook (like getting a private course venue all day, which isn’t cost feasible) means that it’s a tough sell for more than a couple dozen people to spend an entire Saturday in the summer at a Refuge meet up.
Yes, I’ve busted your balls on plenty of occasions but my .02 is to stop taking anything involving the Roost stuff what appears to be so personally. Try to get it back to what made this group successful in the first place…good people that want to play and the fact it was a free flowing community.
And in all seriousness, have someone else take over as point person for the MN contingent after the year is out. New blood/ideas are what will keep people interested, plus it’s a hell of a lot more fun not being responsible for everything.
There is a team behind everything, Nanski isn’t a dictator in this. Also I don’t know anyone who would jump at the chance to take over. Knowing what he puts into all of this, I doubt anyone would want to take over. Suggesting that he isn’t taking in any new ideas, or losing what makes this group great, isnt fair
Yeah, I never said he wasn’t taking in new ideas. I said he asked for honest input and then seemed to get upset over people not agreeing with the same way he views things.
And if no one else is willing to take over for a year, maybe that shows you it needs to be tweaked. It’s actually not a slight against @bignanski to suggest it’s good to have rotating leadership. There’s a reason pretty much every club under the sun does that exact thing.
The trick to sustainability for Roosts in general will be keeping a pipeline of new people always coming in. You’re all “Boss Mom’s” in an MLM model for NLU. What happens when you’re not adding more customers or more Boss Mom’s to your portfolio? You go stale and die.
I don’t expect everyone, everywhere to view things the same way I do. But I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that everyone here is here because they love golf to some degree. I do expect that everyone here shares some portion of my feeling that this community is actually special and something to cherish. If my calculus - that this group and this tournament are about more than just a couple rounds of golf - is wrong, then I’ll concede that maybe I don’t know what any of this is about. And maybe someone else will actually want to take on the task of making it a sustainable thing that people want to be a part of.
I do have people who I rely on to organize these things and keep the ship running. I value their input immensely. Privately, they’ve echoed basically everything that’s been said here. My goal has only ever been for people to get involved and enjoy it.
You made this thing, NSS1 was my jumping-off point with this community, and it blew away my expectations for what a community-organized golf society could be. Maybe I’m already a Refuge Old if I expect that others will want that for themselves.
I don’t disagree with this at all. What I’m worried about is it being so free-flowing that there isn’t actually anything tangible to pass on. Every new person is starting from scratch and finding their way through vs having some kind of bedrock to launch their own ideas from.
I’ll concede that us punching well above our weight when I first joined may have been the exception to the rule. I just see steadily growing engagement from NLU, new members joining the Nest all the time, and expect things to trend you know?
Like others, I just can’t make the date work. Agreed to play in a buddy’s member-guest the following week/weekend and as has been mentioned, there are only so many weekends in the summer and unfortunately I am limited in how many of them I can dedicate to golf events.
Personally, no issue with the venue, cost, format, etc. but I can understand those that feel differently.
Thanks, Ryne. I will hold out hope that we get 7 more this year (which would get us to 48) and recalibrate my expectations for NSS5. If anyone would like to take over as captain, we’re always accepting applications.
Just working out final travel details, but I should be back in town for the event this year. With the upfront payment I just needed to make sure everything was buttoned up before putting the money down.
I have some thoughts that could all be dumb. These are personal opinions and are not to be construed as the opinions of my employer or anyone else on the refuge.
I am very fired up for the northstar. This will be the first one I get to play in and I’m really looking forward to it.
I would be equally fired up for the northstar if it were an 18 hole stroke play event.
Heavy lies the crown - I don’t think it’s fair to expect our gui @bignanski to run this thing perpetually. It’s looks like a ton of work and headache with dealing with a bunch of ass hats like us.
3B. Maybe it would make sense to elect a roost chair every year to handle everything so that each gui knows there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
In the immortal words of Mike Winchell, I love all y’all.
