Roll Call: Minnesota Part 2 - SIM MEETUP post 9471

Lived in EC for 8 years and I never will understand how that brewery took off. They would have 20 indistinguishable hazy IPAs on tap

Alright y’all, it’s been over a week and we’ve got 9 people signed up. I need feedback (note: genuine interest, not an invitation to shitpost).

I’m hoping for around 20-30 so help me understand why we’re sitting at <10. Our roost has ~80 members, about 40 of which are very active by my estimation.

Does literally nobody care about the inter-roost competition or is something confusing? Are people concerned about having to play with 1 other person or is $30 too steep?

I don’t really care about the inter-Roost competition piece since my availability for unplanned travel if I were to qualify for something is very limited.

But I’m just happy to be included.

You clearly underestimated my ability to procrastinate if you think I fill out a form right away even though I definitely had time to do so.

2nd this - primary enjoyment of the NSU Roost and MN Roll call for me is having the few big local events to pin on the calendar, some smaller meetups if I can make em fit, and finding some random times to meetup and play.

Overarching inter-roost competition doesn’t really move the needle for me, and like Lonnie said - semi-unplanned golf travel will probably always be a tricky thing to navigate on my end.

That said - I would still be happy to throw $30 into a pot and have the fun that comes with a points race and also help subsidize some of the costs for the folks who are able to actually participate.

This is where I think a lot of people net out, and I certainly get that and appreciate it. I do enjoy competition and mostly just get excited at an excuse to travel and play golf with other sickos, but your first line is exactly what drew me to this Refuge nonsense in the first place.

That being said, part of my job as Jefe is to foster said inter-roost competition. Beyond just playing more golf together, I think that’s the reason we have Roosts at all, or what the Roosts are centered on. So my goal for this year was to make the competition piece fit into what most people already do, which is ā€œthe few big local events… some smaller meetups… and finding some random times to meetup and play.ā€

I write pretty verbosely so I know reading my whole breakdown is boring and maybe makes it seem like it will be a lot of work, but my main consideration was not trying to change people’s habits or give them a taxing schedule. Just play and get rewarded for it. And at the end of the year, we’ll have a clear leaderboard of who qualifies for the Regional, and hopefully that also reflects who is able to actually go - the people who can play more can potentially get more points, and are theoretically more likely to be able to travel.

Just to bump this, my brother and I have the 7:18 tee time at Baker and 1:20 time at Highland on 8/24. Anyone who would like to join either time, feel free to grab the other two spots.

I’ll likely stay up to midnight tonight to get a morning time at Keller for next Thursday. If anyone is interested in that (likely in the 7-8am hour) let me know! And still trying to figure out where to play Thursday afternoon, so I can be swayed if anyone is available and wants to play somewhere specific

I think a large part of it (among other things) for me is that I basically treat the Refuge how I treat my News intake. I keep it local, check out the big National Headlines and then dabble in the sports/Eat section. I do not make it my life and consume every piece ever produced and talk about the ā€œnewsā€ with everyone and anyone and I do not care about the ā€œBigā€ items that will not impact my world at all.

To me, outside of the Minnesota Local scene, I just have no context and no knowledge of the Nest at large and therefore just don’t have any interest. I couldn’t name more than 3 other roosts honestly and I am not sure I could tell you anyone’s user name outside of the High Profile guys that aren’t in the Minnesota Thread.

Not hate to anyone that is die hard but that is just where I net out.

And make no mistake, I’m not trying to make people care when they don’t. If we can’t get the numbers because nobody really wants to travel that’s fine. If we can’t get numbers because people don’t understand it, that’s different.

Where I net out is that it’s just more stuff that I need to think about. I’ve just got too much going on to commit to playing a round every two weeks with another gui in the roost, to post in here when I’m playing with which tees, and who I’m playing with. This year I’ve mostly played just whenever I can and on pretty short notice.

I’m primarily interested in the NSS (hopefully I can play in it next year), Frozen Fourball and playing 3-5 rounds with a refuge crew each year. Tacking on points / stakes in a wrap around season for a chance to play in something in another state I’ll likely have a conflict with is just too much to wrap my small brain around.

From my perspective as someone who fights for every round I get to play (for the most part) due to time commitments it can seem daunting but at the end of the day I assume this

I will be at the:
Shoot Out
Frozen Fourball
Whatever Spring event we add
Simulator meet ups in the winter

I may struggle to post 6 scores in time for the season long points race but because I’m going to make a big effort to spend time with this group and participate that’s really what matters. For the time and effort that can go into organizing these things isn’t easy, and if I chip in $30 and only get points from my participation in the main events and finish outside of anything of relevance, who cares. It’s helping maintain/add to the community that everyone here has worked hard to build.

I don’t have a membership to a private club (or any club) I don’t play in a league, but I am a member of this wonderful group of people.

This is my club.

Having the ability to say ā€œI am playing in the Northstar United event this weekendā€ is something I am proud of.

Me not having enough points to go to wherever the regional is doesn’t matter to me, but being associated with the group that does go, that matters to me.

And as far as I am aware, I don’t think I will lose my Roost status for finishing last (or near last) in the standings.

Fully support people doing what they want to do, but I guess as long as we keep doing all the things we are doing, it will all be ok.

We couldn’t even get matchplay rounds scheduled.

I scheduled and played mine… :man_shrugging:

Edit: I know you did too @tj_denawli that was a knee jerk response. Forgive me

Same here, but as collective group we weren’t exactly hitting 100%.

Having people get relegated somehow would be hilarious

Just wanted to chime in and say I love the idea. But I just live too far away and don’t have the time commitment to be able to commit for the travel events for me to join. Like was mentioned above though I may still throw in the $30 to help offset costs from others. But I don’t have any Roost or even Nest members in town to validate any of my scores, and I likely couldn’t commit to the travel either.

Definitely hope to get to some meetups next year though. I joined the Nest too late this year to block those off.

For all this Roost love, I have an unworn aloha hat that I will give to anyone who wants it. I’ll even drop it off at your house. I’m just trying to purge, especially things that don’t fit.
