Playing my second Tillinghast of the week tomorrow. Played Powelton CC in Newburgh this past Tuesday and headed to Port Jervis to play the old Port Jervis CC (now called the Lynx at River Bend) tomorrow.
Still hoping to get on the black one more time before the season ends.
I’ve played it before, maybe 4-5 times. It was in ok shape when I played it last maybe 2-3 years ago but I think they were switching ownership so they might’ve poured some more into it since I’ve last played it. The layout itself is tight in spots but fair and interesting throughout. Each hole is pretty distinct and I remember pretty much all of them vividly even after not seeing it for awhile.
I’ll let you know the condition after I see it again tomorrow.
Played Maple Moor yesterday for the first time. Was an enjoyable round and course in really good shape except for the greens which were a bit spongy. Several fun short risk/reward par 4’s. We walked and finished it a bit under 4 hours which is always a bonus
Glad to see Yellow getting some well deserved love. Red is my favorite to play, but Yellow is a sleeper, great layout, good use of land, and some classic Tilly holes on the back.
I go red, green, yellow, blue, but I shot a great round in blue last weekend so that might move up in the ranking. Black is special for a once or twice a year treat.
Heading up to nyc metro tomorrow to play at Edgewood CC in Rivervale, NJ. A friends company bought a foursome for an outing happening. Anyone ever play there before? Any “things to know”?
How is Yale coming out of the summer closure? Amazing course. I got to play it a couple years ago.
Yellow is shorter, and fun course with some cool greens, and as mentioned, laid out on some cool land movements. 10-14 is a great stretch. The Yellow is the last course built at Bethpage, added in 1958. Tillinghast routed and designed the Black, Red, and Blue courses (construction by Joe Burbeck). Green was the original Lenox Hills Country Club designed by Devereux Emmet. Lenox Hills predates the State Park. The Yellow was created out of rerouting holes from Blue, and creating new interior holes. There are some leftover holes from Tillinghast’s Blue course on current day Yellow, 10-14. 13 Yellow is a great par 4. Not sure what’s left of original Blue on current Blue. Someone may know, maybe the holes on the perimeters. Aerials are pretty grainy.
Tough to go wrong at Bethpage, we are lucky to have it. Personal ranking Black, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green. I’ll have to give Green another try sometime, it’s been a long time. Could be great, but needs some TLC.
teed off at 9 so course wasn’t backed up yet. We went out as a threesome and walked so pacing was nice. Assume if we rode we would have been waiting more since there was a riding foursome in front of us
Had a good time at Edgewood today. Looks like they had 3 9’s but now only 2 (the 3rd 9 is being converted into a housing development :/)
Also they have a brand new clubhouse that really reminded me of a casino or fancy hotel lobby, not really my aesthetic for golf…howevah they also have their old clubhouse still there as kind of like the halfway house and that was really good vibe. (Old clubhouse in front, new one in the back on the right)
Format was shamble (everyone tees off, pick the best drive, everyone then plays their own ball from there out). Our team shot 6 under which was tied for low score. After a card comparison we took home the hardware as we birdied the #2 handicap hole and they had par.
Thanks for that! I’ve always tried to take it in on the poster in the clubhouse, up by the locker room, but I’m always late for my tee time, so…This is great.
I enjoy the Tull holes on the Yellow, but wonder what the original Blue was like with all that room!
I am going to stay overnight next Monday, first time, to play Black by myself. I have tried to get a tee time all summer but to no avail. I will let you know how the line goes.
Caught it a little wet after some rain and they have since done some weird things to the routing. They swapped 1 and 2 with 10 and 11 so it starts off much tougher than it used to.
Other than that it still holds up to my memory and has plenty of interesting holes, the shape of the course could be better but I’ve never been picky about stuff like that so all in all an enjoyable round.
