Played Eisenhower Red this morning, the course is definitely showing some signs of wear from the heat and humidity. While the greens are still better than they were in April when I first played, they’re showing some wear in spots. The fairways are dead in some spots and you can see they are trying to transplant turf from other parts of the course.
Are you serious? I think this means I’m finally going to get TGC. Nice.
I want this to be better
Maybe I made it sound worse that it was. The course is definitely still playable, and is probably in better shape than it was at the start of the season. The fairways were the most surprising to me. They were verticut in a lot of spots, as were the green surrounds.
I played with a couple of guys that had a cart, and the GPS was forcing them off of the fairways on some holes. They were getting pretty frustrated and it definitely slowed down our round, but the alternative of the extra wear and tear would be worse.
Played Marine Park Saturday 11:52 with 2 buddies and a random. Played the back tees, walked, pretty long course, loved it. Best NYC course I’ve played, loved the chipping practice area (with bunker!), didn’t love the irons only driving range (but better than nothing). Random shot 77, buddy 1 shot 86 (birdied 18 for the victory), buddy 2 and I shot 88 (i three putt 18 for a bogey). It was very very hot and very little shade on Marine Park. Think the round took about 5.5 hours, but didn’t feel too slow for me. Will definitley be back.
Played Bethpage Green on Saturday morning around 8:30. My foursome got around in a little over 4 hours which is amazing for a weekend.
One negative was the condition of several fairways. Large dead areas very much in play. That was disappointing but the greens were good and they cut down the tall grass.
I played the Red a few weeks before and it was in great shape. Not sure what happened on the Green. Hopefully they can get those fairways in better shape soon.
Probably the areas still recover from PGA championship?
I should have mentioned that 1 and 18 are still playing with temp tees to recover from PGA and those two fairways still show a lot of wear and tear. The rest of the course was unaffected by the PGA. Atleast to my knowledge as a spectator.
Honestly, it seems like the course was neglected with the PGA going on which I guess is understandable. I’m just used to the course being in better shape. I’m sure they will get it back on track before the end of the season.
It’s been another tough summer for golf courses with this weather. My club lost it’s fairways/tees last year and the super ultimately ended up getting fired. The new super is excellent but we’ve lost the fairways again this year. 100 year old drainage system has something to do with it but the heat along with heavy rains equates to tough conditions. The water sits in the soil and the heat just boils the roots. Our new super has some pretty cool new techniques that he’s implementing but we won’t see the benefits of it until next year
PS - I’ve completely lost my own lawn and it’s driving me nuts
Which fairways? I believe part of greens was used for parking for the additional staff during PGA week.
West sayville lost its greens within a month or so. I play it often and in June things were looking great. This last month though it’s at ZJ levels. They’ve lost it.
As an aside I played Bergen point for the first time. Great condition and from what I heard it’s the best it’s ever been. Fun course but 2 of the Par 5s are extreme doglegs that almost force you to play it in 3.
Got a chance to play the vineyards. Loved it. Great shape and it rewards accuracy for sure. Staff was great too
Anyone play the Town of Oyster Bay course? It’s another one I just have not touched yet.
played the front nine… in a word: tight
Very tight front, a little target golf-ish. The back is a little more open.
I was happily surprised with Sunken Meadow, another NYS Park course.
I can’t recall all the fairways that had dead areas. Several did including 8 and 9 which are about as far away from the Black and the clubhouse as you can get on the Green.
But you could be right that they used some areas on the Green for additional staff and maintenance.
Agreed that tight is the first word that comes to mind. Back nine is definitely better than the front.
Haven’t played it this year but last year it was in horrible condition and I haven’t wanted to go back.
I wonder what species that is
