Roll Call: Maine

In Portland, Holy Donut for sure. Places like DiMillo’s and Portland Lobster Co. are just tourist traps.

Great, had those on the list so good to know! Thanks

I actually like the Holy Donut. The donuts are different- potato based.

My favorite lobster roll in the area is the Lobster Shack at Two Lights, it’s right at the base of a lighthouse with a great view: https://lobstershacktwolights.com. Be sure to double check that they haven’t closed for the season.

Portland is a great foodie city beyond seafood, there are a bunch of well regarded restaurants. The local paper’s restaurant reviewer is the real deal if you want to explore beyond the lobster roll/tourist circuit, here’s a link to his work: Restaurant reviews - Portland Press Herald

I’ve also never had a bad meal at Havana up in Bar Harbor.

Thanks alot!

Any chance that still applies to Columbus Day weekend? Hoping to get my dad out there for
a birthday round either that sunday (10/13) or monday (10/14).

Please get a sandwich at Ramona’s. We routinely drive the 2 hour round trip for them

Not Maine specific, but figured I’d throw it out here. Anyone on this thread ever headed towards the northern lakes region of NH, please try out Foothills grille in Sandwich NH. It’s just north of Meredith/Center Harbor. Really good comfort food, nice beer and wine selection.

Yup, especially in the afternoon.

Kebo Valley is on the agenda for October

I am completely hear for the Harris Golf disparagement in the discussion of Penoby.

Finished the pod. A really interesting itinerary, even being a local and a native I had to pull up google maps and figure out where he was going. I think I’ve only played 4 of the courses on his itinerary: Penoby, Kebo, Portland and Poland. PCC is obviously the “best” course on that list, and any time anyone wants to get me on there I am game. It’s tough to justify going to MDI during the summer as a Mainer, and then it’s also tough to justify dropping that kind of cash on Northeast Harbor when Kebo is right there. I do need to get the ferry out to North Haven at some point. I’m frustrated I didn’t learn about Grindstone Neck earlier, I spent a week up that way last summer.

I think Garrett was right that the “normal” big name courses (Belgrade, Sugarloaf, Boothbay Harbor, I’d throw in Sunday River) are all some variation of fine to good but aren’t really what you’d travel across the country to play. Words I was surprised to hear so often included “Prouts Neck.” I am not surprised that they didn’t say to him “sure, come on down!” That’s a summer resident only spot, and I don’t know a single soul who has ever stepped foot on it. It’s like they don’t want anyone to know they exist. Conversely, I think that’s the longest I’ve ever heard a non-Mainer talk about golf in Maine and they didn’t say the words “Cape Arundel” once. He was mostly north of Portland, but that’s usually the first thing anyone says to me when they talk about golf in Maine.

Favorite part.

He kinda hit all the spots I had expected, mentioned Castine, Island club as well. Prouts doesn’t shock me and Abenaki I knew wouldn’t happen - but wish they’d reached out to more people so they could’ve got on.

The “western” Maine trip would be decent but would want to see Diadema and Clinton, Mingo, and a haul but Mt Kineo. And more digs when covering Sunday River lol.

PCC over Kebo is a big stretch for me though. Disagree but that’s okay.

Prouts is really cool!

Unrelated but if anyone wants to do Kebo + Cabot at some point as a starting point or on the way back that’s a golf trip.

I think there’s a Bar Harbor ferry to Halifax?

The Cat used to - idk if it still runs though. I went forever ago

It’s very high in my list but it’s as long to get to Bandon as it is Cabot

Fried Egg has done some content on Cape previously, probably why they didn’t mention it on this pod and Garrett was mostly north of Portland.

Was nice to hear him talk about Penoby. I went up once when they were still owned by Resurrection Golf (who also sucks) and I hope it gets back to Ross-standard. Totally agree on places like Belgrade and Sugarloaf, I would rather play there in the fall.

Irrelevant but I audibly laughed when Bangor was mentioned as a Downeast city to find a resort.

I admittedly haven’t played Kebo in like a decade. So I was probably like an 18 handicap and a golf course was a golf course.

Alright so I got the OK from the fiancée to play golf on the morning of Saturday October 5th!

I will try my hand at getting a tee-time 3days in advance at Cape Arundel.

Anyone want to join? I’m canadian but I don’t bite. I will however, be very apologetic.
