Roll Call: Maine

Awesome. Hope the rain Friday holds off for you guys.

Anyone coming up to Bangor for Phish? Just moved up here at the end of last summer and joined Penobscot Valley CC, a.k.a. Penobby. Great Donny Ross course on its way back to glory (not quite there) after years of neglect. Anyways, I’ve got a member-guest spot to fill (making adult friends as a father of two in a city of 30k isn’t easy) for that Saturday, July 16, if anyone is going to be in town and is free for some golf.

Would totally make the drive up from Kennebunk that day but the 16th is also my Member-Guest!

Haven’t played Penobby but have heard good things. Both PVCC and my club in Wells are run by the same management, I would think I could get some sort of discount to play up there.

Howdy, I will be in Camden for a few days at the end of July for our wedding anniversary. Hoping to sneak out for a quick round :crossed_fingers:
Any suggestions of courses in and around Camden?
Thanks!

The course at Samoset Resort in Rockport is pretty cool. Ocean views on most holes.

Rockland GC and Goose River are up in that area, but I’ve never played either. Have heard good things about Rockland GC though.

Just saw on local Maine news that Caleb Manuel’s going to become a Georgia bulldog. Or dawg. However the hell they spell it!

That’s awesome. He’s been killing it at UConn and in the amateur scene here.

As a Dawg and lover of Maine this puts a smile on the face. Hope he kills it and joins the touring Dawgs for a successful pro career.

Thanks! Heard good things about Samoset and Rockland is a Stiles and Van Kleek design so it’s gotta be pretty good.

If you are going to be in that area for your anniversary, I highly recommend seeing if you can get a reservation at Primo in Rockland.

All homemade and farm to table. Best meal I’ve had in my life. The head chef is phenomenal.

Anyone up in Maine familiar with the course hosting the state AM? Coworker is playing in it. Is it really just like 6100 yards?

I’ve only played there once, but the greens are tough and make up for the short yardage. Plus the course is very close to the ocean and the wind can be brutal there.

Weather got worse yesterday as the day went on and there were a lot of high scores in the afternoon wave.

Great to get back to Brunswick Golf Club this week (and tmw morn). Fun round with 2 locals. I’m a summer interloper on a road-trip with two kids from the South, but my folks have been up here for 15 years or so. I spent an incredible lost summer many years ago as a caretaker out on Seguin island/light.

As a heads-up that’s probably unnecessary, it looks like Highland Green 9 in Topsham got the short-end of the stick in the course portfolio of the owners – it’s virtually unplayable. Sad to see it in such a condition. It’s always been an interesting 9, especially as a walker, kind of a nature hike interrupted by golf holes kind of thing. Restaurant and tap-room have closed to. Some management/owner dispute, allegedly. Have seen more foot golfers out there than actual golfers, which is [hands in the air as a question emoji].

(Highland Green is down with brown, but not in a good way…)

Wish I had more time this year to explore other courses in the state!

Yes. I played in the tournament. We played the mid-am there a couple years ago as well. Not long but the 6100 yards is a little deceiving as there are some super short par 4s that you may be laying up on. Biddeford-Saco, where I play at, is like 6300 yards but I think probably plays shorter than Webhannet. Greens are tough. Very dangerous to get aggressive with putts. Great golf course that rewards strong play but will bite you if you make mistakes.

Long-time member at Webhannet, also played in the Am. The course can play longer than the 6100 on the scorecard. The par 3s on the front are tough and play 240, 175, and 215. Some of the shorter par 4s have sloped greens where being in the wrong spot can lead to a 3-putt. The par 5s are short with all but one under 500 yards. For the tourney, they put the pins in some tricky (but fair) spots. The wind was up on both days I played but more so on Tuesday. I was glad to see the course hold its own and hope the club gets to host the Am again in the future.

Returning to the homeland for a friend’s wedding in boothbay harbor and was wondering if anyone has played Boothbay Harbor CC? Search results are telling me a few people have played a couple of years ago, but wondering if it’s worth the $250 price tag for a resort guest…

Will also take any opinions on nearby options: Wawenock, Bath GC, Brunswick GC, etc.

Sry can’t weigh in on everything, but I prefer Brunswick to Bath in terms of playability, and I really enjoy both courses. Some cramped holes over at Bath. Both are very pleasant walks.

The conditions at Boothbay were fantastic when I played there last summer as part of a work outing.

You can play Brunswick for less than $100 with a cart on weekends (and twilight weekend walking rate is around $55 I think?). I’d play there over Bath. Never played Wawenock.

Hey all. We have our annual St. Joe’s buddies golf tourney coming up and the past dozen years or so we’ve played basically every course within 45 minutes of Windham (where most still live in and around and the after party is located).

This year we’re looking to play a new course and choices are Dutch Elm in Arundel or Toddy Brook in Yarmouth- any recommendations one way or the other?
Thanks!

Dutch Elm can be very hit or miss conditioning wise. I’ve never played Toddy Brook so can’t give insight there.

I played Riverside in Portland recently, and the North Course was in good shape. It’s a muni course so nothing too special, but $40 on a weekend is a great deal. I like Brunswick GC too.
