Desert Willow is a good place to look first: 2 courses, reasonably priced, well conditioned. The thread will mention others: Shadow Ridge, Indian Wells, PGA West Mountain, etc. It’s mostly about how much you want to spend.
Hey everyone! New member to the Nest and am excited to start poking around this app. I’m from Chicago but moving to LA (West Hollywood area) in the next few weeks.
Really just looking for any recommendations for some decent public golf options. I’ve seeing more than a few courses within a 30 to 40min drive from my area. Right now I’m right around a 10 handicap but looking forward to try and play a little bit more than living in downtown Chicago.
Lots of decent public golf, but most will be in the 30-40 min range. The LA public munis are okay, but hard to get on with how much the game has grown post covid. Dollar for dollar, golf is better up in Ventura or down in Long Beach.
If you want to join the Lowcal Roost, we are kicking off the year of events Jan 14th with our 3rd annual LA vs The World up at Soule park this year.
Hello all. I’m from the Chicago roost and will be making a trip out west for work. Flying into LAX and driving to San Diego. Any good spots you all recommend along the way?
Lots of good spots down the 405 to SD. Los Verdes in Palos Verdes (hard to get a tee time, but might have luck as a single), Skylinks in Long Beach, San Clemente Muni (also tough to find a tee time, but easier as a single), Goat Hill Park in Oceanside, just to name a few. Im sure im missing a bunch.
@mduenas3 To add to Sam’s list (North to South) - El Dorado Park in Long Beach (better than Skylinks IMO and cheaper. Decent access as a single and both LB courses are an easy walk), Strawberry Farms and Oak Creek in Irvine (carts only on both and $$$), Arroyo Trabuco in Laguna Niguel (will there be a Blockie sighting?!?), San Juan Hills in San Juan Capo (Heritage BBQ is close by and arguably the best BBQ in SoCal), Shore Cliffs in San Clemente (play Muni instead), and then Encinitas Ranch in North County SD (meh - I hate the 1st hole). If money is no object then play Strawberry or Oak Creek. If you want to walk then the LBC courses/Muni/Goat Hill are the way to go.
Question for the SoCal golfers. Flying in from HNL and landing at LAX at 6am. Would like to get an early morning round in before traveling up to Ojai for Soule Park. Any recommendations? Looking for something to shake off the jet lag. Looks like Los Feliz, Roosevelt and Pico Rivera have tee times. Also open to any recommendations.
Are you looking for a full 18? I would head north and try and get on at Rustic or Olivas.
If youre looking for a quick 9 then the Top golf 10 hole par 3 is a great way to shake off the cobwebs and its 10 min from LAX. Penmar is also a good 9 hole stop in venice on the way up.
Howdy y’all - visiting from TX for a couple weeks for work.
Anyone game to play this coming sunday? Looking at playing los verdes but open to other nearby suggestions as well (Ideally teeing off for an early time at around 7ish or afternoon at 1PM)
Roosevelt is by far the best of those 3 and a nice walk with good views of the city but the pace can be very slow and the conditions will be pretty poor after the recent rain.
If you’re getting in on a weekday, you should be able to find something at Rustic early in the morning. Some slots will open up if you keep checking the tee sheet around 24 hours out from your desired time.
Hey folks looking for some advice. Moving down to lowcal next month and weighing 2 job offers, one in Costa Mesa and one in El Segundo.
Question I care about is which area has better public golf. Willing to drive to play cool courses, and looking to get involved with the lowcal folks in the area
You’ll be driving a ways to get to good public golf either way… I would give the lead to El Segundo as you would be closer to Rustic/Olivas and the LA City courses when you can grab times. Costa Mesa would put you closer to Goose Creek, San Clemente, and Goat.
Eh, I play more rounds 1+hr away than I do in Long Beach. The LB courses are top tier muni’s for LA/OC (Los Verdes, Rancho, and Santa Anita being my other favorites), but not good enough to influence a moving decision.
