Roll Call: L.A. County (Rustic Canyon and the Coachella Valley are not in L.A. County)

I don’t think golf courses are mandated closed by the state. Some counties haven’t closed at all during the “safer at home” order: https://thegolfnewsnet.com/golfnewsnetteam/2020/04/29/are-golf-courses-open-in-california-more-and-more-counties-and-cities-are-opening-instead-of-closing-118960/

its county by county it seems, but certainly there was a period of time where it was statewide. on friday, san diego county is allowing its courses to reopen. at that point, every county in socal besides la county will be open for golf. tee times at places like rustic canyon are impossible to come by. im also not sure how its safer for golf courses (or beaches) for that matter to be open in ventura/OC yet not in LA, thus prompting la county residents to go seek outdoors activities elsewhere.

Made a journey down south to play Goat Hill Park. Have been wanting to check this place out for a while, and after seven weeks of nothing but putting practice I booked the first tee time that fit my schedule.
I have to say, the course more than lived up to my expectations. With no carts for rent, it was a challenging walk (it’s not called Goat Hill for nothing), but not the worst. Every hole was challenging, but rewarding if you hit good shots. I struggled with the driver - big slice, but iron game was on, and I hit some of the best chips and pitches ever. Putting, well let’s just say these greens broke a lot more than my carpet, but nothing over a 3 putt. But I hit a few greens in regulation and made a super satisfying par on 18 with my best up and down ever!
End result, 99 - I broke 100 for the first time ever!!! Last year on Father’s Day I played 18 for the first time and stopped counting after the 12th hole (I added it up 126). To break 100 at that course was extremely satisfying. So glad golf is back!!! IMG_1281|666x500

Wowoooo. Breaking 100 for the first time at the Goat is HARD. The course is penal AF. What a feat, one you’ll remember vividly. Last two rounds I played were 75/94 and they were similar rounds. You can really get “Goated” as they say in a hurry. Have seen Tour pros make quads twice in one round there. Go find someone else that can say that about playing w/ tour pros (not named Spieth.)

Anyone hitting Rustic Canyon in the near future? I need a favor: failed to pick up a logoed ball for the collection during my trip out there from OKC. Would gladly cover the costs of ball, shipping and the cost of an adult beverage for whoever would be gracious enough to send me one.

Playing there tomorrow morning with @TacoBucket @SliceyMcShankerston and @ehren11. I’d be happy to grab a logo ball. Any preference on whether you care if it’s a cheap ball or a pro v?

I love the Refuge! No preference at all, I really appreciate it. I’ll hit your DM to get Venmo info

Hey LA! Anyone know a local club builder (West LA would be ideal, but willing to drive)? I have an old set of Cobra irons I’d like to get re-shafted. I would take the opportunity to do them myself for a first time rebuild (don’t have the equipment…someday) but if there’s an aspiring or novice builder locally I’d love to work with them!

Also - didn’t formally introduce myself with that post since I’m a newb. Wife and I are new to the area, been living all over the West Coast with my job being responsible for that. Prior to LA we were in Palm Desert (what got me back into golf). I’ve been playing Rancho, Griffith, Sepulveda, and have played Rustic a couple times. Been great surfing this forum and seeing the community that’s here. Let me know if ya’ll ever need a +1 for an outing and I’ll do the same for tee times I snag (especially Rancho!).

Welcome welcome! To your first post, the only club builders I really know of would be at UGP on Sepulveda (expensive) or Roger Dunn on Barrington (inexpensive, I don’t know their full expertise but I’ve never had issues with grips, etc).

Welcome! Hope to get a round in with you at some point. Rancho is about 10 mins from my place so I end up there fairly often.

I’ll check out UGP, I’ve heard of them. Roger Dunn has been a little hit or miss for me in the past but may give them another shot. Would love to do this on my own but have zero equipment and can’t really turn our kitchen into a workstation (love that small apartment life).

I feel ya on that one. constant challenge figuring out where to store golf stuff or lay out a putting mat.

It’s a drive but Ruuki at RD Newbury does a good job with clubs in my experience.

AWESOME.

I’ll be the dude with the green bag and @TacoBucket will have the non-conforming 3-wood.

Well it was meant to be then @Lazstradamus. I decided to give UGP a call last week (before you mentioned Kevin) and spoke with Kevin, got lined up and now he’s working on it! (well, the OC shop is they said they weren’t club building at the moment in West LA). Got really good vibes when I spoke with him, he was great to discuss what I wanted and the type of setup I had. Very thorough.

Nonetheless. Kevin got my order and specs all entered in, so I should have my new shafts in this week! Very pumped.
