Roll Call: L.A. County (Rustic Canyon and the Coachella Valley are not in L.A. County)

Highlighting the line about Strapped: SoCal with Homa, does anyone know what other courses they played? I’m pretty sure they played Wilson/Harding (see post #186) but I haven’t seen any other evidence of where they might’ve gone.

Pretty sure it was all out in the Valencia area, definitely Vista Valencia par 3 course “Chica”. Not sure what else though. @Hwhite/@TravReid what’s out there?

Thanks for all the input. I think for this venture I will head to either Simi Hills or Rustic. Soule sounds where I want to go when I have some time to spend, maybe take the wife to Ojai for a weekend.
Now that we have longer days, I will be looking to get some Friday afternoons at new courses like Santa Anita, Wilson, etc. I’m always up for a new course and good company, hopefully I can find both with some of the Refugees.

Anyone want a soggy walk at Penmar today?

Actually a prefect day for penmar but I have the dog and am working all day.

Dogs should be allowed at Penmar and most other courses.
I’ll probably end up there Sunday afternoon as well…

My dog doesn’t play golf. Sunday is 50/50.

I got this–I’m a SM resident, a member at Penmar and a healthy 19 handicap–

Soule and Ojai and those guys are well over an hour–great courses (well, Ojai is, never played Soule), but I think they’re farther than you want.

I love Angeles National, but it’s usually in the 70-100 dollar range, depending on when you go.

Don’t sleep on Los Verdes–in RPV, you can walk it, it’s cheap, and a lot of fun. But getting a tee time is a major deal–gotta go online right when the tee times open and hope for the best.

What’s wrong with the big Rancho (instead of the par 3)?

Agree with Simi Hills, decent course, fairly cheap. Same goes for Sterling Hills–definitely cheap, might be right on the edge of an hour away from westside.

And then, of course, there’s the Sepulveda Dam trio (Balboa/Encino/Woodley) which are very beginner friendly, and cheap, but not really a special birthday kind of place.

So I lean toward Los Verdes or Angeles National when I’m looking for something outside the Westy/Penmar/Rancho rotation. Let us know where you net out.

All on the list, Los Verdes in particular. My understanding is that Simi Hills or Rustic are the better courses, but the back 9 at Los Verdes have the best views in Southern California golf. I may play Rancho this weekend, between the weather and coronavirus I don’t think it will be tough to get a tee time.

Well, truthfully, it’s just the one hole, #15, with the view of the ocean and Catalina, that’s got the killer views, although many of the other holes on the back nine are indeed pretty.

Rustic is clearly the best of the bunch, although when you suck, as I do, I don’t know that it’s as apparent.

At this point and time, I can confidently say that Soule Park is and has been in much better shape than OVI has been lately. Conditions aside, they completely ruined the 9th and 18th holes with the inclusion of the Farmhouse. Rustic and Soule are the two best public courses in Ventura County, I’m a member of Soule’s men’s club and have played it consistently once a week since the beginning of the year. Call me biased, but I feel like when you add it all up (couse condition, location, cost, playability, etc), Soule Park stands pretty high on its own. Would love to play with any and all refugees that ever plan to swing through there.

Not to mention Soule is 25% of the OVI price at peak rate.

Oh, I didn’t mean to make it seem like I was not high on Soule–just that it was a good bit outside of OP’s desired drive time.

And last time I played OVI it was still under construction on 9/18. Would be interested to see it turned out.

Agree 100%. Soule is solid and I’d love to take you up on that.

Regarding OVI - I was so looking forward to playing a public George Thomas course after reading his book. I understood that it was altered from the original photos but I shed a tear as soon as I saw the monstrosity called the Farmhouse. It became evident to me that they don’t care about the golf course at all. The Farmhouse is way out of place between the two holes.

Yeah, I know they played Chica for sure, thought he mentioned Rosevelt while we were at the Rustic meet-up as well. They said with Max in the mix, they went to all his early hangs out here…not necessarily all in the Santa Clarita area though.

@NineTo5Golf’s passion for Soule Park is infectious. I’m a member because of his love for the club. Golf needs more John Figueroas out there. Come join us Angelenos!
