Where are you guys staying?
Rented a house close to the zoo.
Stole this from Reddit. Should give you a good starting point.
My top pick would be the Ross course at French Lick. The Dye course is something to see, but it will wear people out.
Covered Bridge was very accommodating of Bachelor Party group 2 years ago.
My opinion is that the better distillery tours are in Lexington and Frankfort.
Reddit List is below
Top dollar - Pete Dye Course at French Lick. Close by and historic - Donald Ross Course at French Lick. Both about an hour west of Louisville.
A ānice little courseā - Old Capitol in Corydon, Indiana
A little closer - still in Indiana - out in the corn - very good course:
Chariots Run (formerly associated with a nearby casino).
North up I-71, then across river into Indiana and still associated with casino on site, about an hour:
Belterra
Close by and usually in great shape - Fuzzy Zoellerās courses just across the river in Indiana:
Covered Bridge - 6 miles up I-65
Champions Point - 16 miles up I-65
Places you can probably get on with a call from your club pro:
University of Louisville Cardinal Club
Audubon Country Club
Persimmon Ridge - used to be harder than Valhalla.
About an hour east/Lexington area:
UK Club - Big Blue and Wildcat courses - play Wildcat
Kearney Hill
Nevel Meade and Heritage Hill allow jeans and no collars
I would agree with all of that except playing Big Blue over Wildcat.
Took a trip to Louisville last year. Played Chariot Run, Donald Ross in French Lick, and Cardinal Club.
Chariot Run was in good condition. Itās pretty wide open and it was windy so it wasnāt easy, but itās a good value at less than $100. Can be an asskicker.
Donald Ross is honestly one of the most fun courses Iāve ever played. Some wild green complexes. 16 is a short par 3 that Iād play if I ever needed to make a hole in 1. 17 has a crazy tier that splits the green horizontally. 8 is awesome, as is 3. Multiple others would be literal impossible up and downs from certain spots depending on the pin.
Cardinal Club is private. We had a connection to get us on, but Iād bet they would be accommodating to a larger group like this. It was pristine with lots of different tee options that would work well with various skill levels. You wouldnāt be disappointed.
We stopped for 9 at Old Capital. Youād never find it on any guide, but itās a course Iād play every day if I had to. Pretty good conditioning, open enough to not hate it, but nothing too simple either. Exactly what youād want out of cheaper public golf.
100% agree that Big Blue > Wildcat. Wild cat is shorter, more narrow, and just feels like 18 holes to fill in the extra space that Big Blue didnāt take. Also would definitely say Kearney Hill would be great for this trip if youāre in the Lexington area. Wide open course with not a lot of water. Challenging if you play it back, but very reasonable if you play from the right tees.
Greetings all. My dad, brothers, and I are headed to Augusta for the Masters this year and are making the road trip our golf trip for this year. Kentucky Dam state park caught my eye as itās a Perry Maxwell and appears to have really good reviews also pretty smoking deal on an overnight stay and play in the cottages there. I would love to make Park Mammoth work but not sure if the logistics will work out unfortunately.
Absolutely worth it. Fun course to play
I would offer advice but youāre going to the masters soā¦no.
Hey man, it only took 17 years for my name to get drawn.
Still playing tomorrow at Park Mammoth at 12:54. Looks like 3 others available.
Hey,
Couple travelling from Australia in second week of June, looking for a couple of must play courses and restaurants both in hospitality business on a work trip so only in Kentucky for 4 days unfortunately. Any and all recommendations welcomed.
Which part of Kentucky will you be in?
Most likely Lawrenceburg as we are being hosted by Campari and wild turkey. Happy to travel 45mins or so for the right course as we will only likely to be able to play two of the days. Always happy to play a morning and afternoon round if applicable.
Cardinal Club is UofLās course and is about 35 minutes from there. Itās private, but since youāre from out of the country itās worth a shot if theyāll let you on. Itās a really nice facility. The other Louisville area courses are probably too far for you, but many are worth checking out, as detailed in this thread. Chariot Run (across the river in Indiana) is 1.5 hours away, but itās a personal favorite.
The Lexington Courses will probably be closer. Kearney Hills is my favorite of the bunch. Itās owned by the city and is a Pete and PB Dye design. Conditioning is generally good but can be spotty. Greenbrier is a private you might be able to beg your way onto, but they may have outgrown that by now. Griffin Gate is a resort course thatās fine. The University Club of Kentucky has two courses, Big Blue is the better of the two. Others are detailed above but those are my favorite choices.
My wifeās family is from Lawrenceburg, great little town. Make sure you swing in Heavenās to Betsy for some good sandwiches as you pass between Four Roses and Wild Turkey. Personally, Woodford Reserve and Castle and Key are two of my favorite distilleries to visit.
As for golf, Kearney Hills is a treat, Iād say this and the Blue Course at the UClub are top tier for the area. Iāve played several rounds at the Thoroughbred Golf Club (aka High Point), something about that place I always loved. Ditto to Griffin Gate, itās a fun resort style course. Lastly would be Booneās Trace down south, another fun course.
Thereās not much bad golf in Lexington, itās a good golf town!
We will be very well taken care on the distillery front! Kearney hill and big blue are top of our list so far and might try and squeeze one of the private courses pending accessibility.
Thank you for the reply!
You guys may be on the edge of doable travel but Iāll give you a shot, too.
Two spots available at Park Mammoth on 4/27 at 12:18 if anyoneās interested in joining
Hopeful bump
Hi Kentucky! Odd question, but three of my buddies and I are heading to peninsula golf club this weekend for a fun 2v2. My question, is the course rated? I cannot find it on the Ghin app to save my life. Will I be able to chart my scores on the app or apply them to my handicap? Thanks!
