Roll Call: Kentucky

Hello fellas. I’ve got a work trip next week to Georgetown, Kentucky. Im coming down Monday and will have the chance for a full 18 anywhere in the Lexington area, and then may be able to sneak in another 9 after work some point during the week.

My thinking is to play the 9 at Cherry Blossom CC if I get the chance since it’s closest to work. Would love some recommendations on where to play 18. I’m coming down from WV so courses on the northeast side of Lexington would be best.

Cherry Blossom is worth an 18 hole round if it works out that way. It’s one of the few Bent grass courses still around that is public as well. If you can only get out for 9, see if they can get you off the back, as I think it has a little more character than the front, but either side is good.

Kearney and Griffin Gate are about the only ones I can think of on that side of Lexington that are public. It’s not far to Picadome either, but Kearney is probably the best bet. It used to host a Senior Tour event. If you have any private course connections Lexington CC and Greenbrier are the closest options, and maybe the two best outside of Idle Hour (you likely can’t get on it). If you can pull either of those, LCC is better, but Greenbrier is quite good as well. If public I’d say Kearney, Cherry Blossom, Griffin Gate in that order.

Perfect. Yeah no country club connections in the area. And I don’t don’t have to play on that side of town, but it is a bit easier for my travel. If there was a standout must play public course on the other side of town I could make it work.

Big thanks for the help!

Agreed. If you can choose I would do Kearny over Griffin Gate. Personal preference for me.

I’ve got a work trip to Fort Knox from the end of Feb through mid March. I will have my weekends free and want to know where I should try to get on. Obviously Valhalla would be a dream, but in reality I’ll be limited to public tracks…

Fort Knox actually has what I’ve heard is a really good track right there on site. It’s called Lindsey and is affordable and solid. Again, I haven’t played there but have often heard great things about it.

That will definitely be my first stop and honestly I may just end up playing there several times, but I was curious what else was close by. I’m an online graduate student at U of L so I’m hoping to try and get on there too. We’ll see.

Folks, an update on The High Cotton Club’s first event in KY, #TheBarnBurner at Kenny Perry’s on 4/16… We will be playing 27 holes (alternating formats each 9) starting around 9:00 with a shootout to a floating green afterwards. More pricing info to follow, but food will be included. Use the link below to sign up, hope to see some of y’all there!

Unfortunately I cannot make it. I got tickets for Keeneland that day with the wife. Going to pick some horses and hopefully win something.

Heritage Hill in Shepherdsville is really good value public course. A lot of fun shots out there. Not that far from where you’ll be.

Excellent. I’ll check it out!

Anniversary weekend for me. Unless she bolts between now and then I’m out!

I know it is crazy late notice. Had to cancel my Sunday foursome due to the weather rolling in but I am headed out to The Woodford Club in Versailles tomorrow morning. If you’re looking for a tee time and place to play I’ll be there at 9:30.

I enjoy that track. Had some success there for a couple years when they had an invitational while a friend of a friend was the pro. Thats been at least 2 name changes ago I think. LOL

I’ve been looking forward to checking it out.

When I was moving carts at Widow’s Watch I would collect non-Widows pencils off the cart. Then to learn about courses in the area I would save them and google the course. Woodford is one that popped up and I went, well that looks like fun.

Hello Kentuckians/Kentuckites, going to be in Lexington in the end of April and looking to play two rounds with some friends. I’ve done a little research and have concluded that Kearney Hill, Big Blue at the University Club, Griffin Gate, and Boone’s Trace are the 4 best in the area. Which two are must-plays? Or if I have it all wrong, which two other courses are must-plays for Lexington? I’ll hang up and listen, thanks fellas.

Kearney is a must.

Griffin Gate is decent if you like Rees Jones courses. Haven’t been over to Boone’s Trace or U Club yet.

Kearney is a steal from what I’ve read, unless conditions have fallen lately.

I figured college courses are usually some of the better ones, with Big Blue allegedly being the better of the two. Forgot to mention that I’ll be in Louisville 4/8-4/10 because my wife coaches club volleyball and I’m hoping to sneak my clubs in the car, so if anyone in that area wants to play a round somewhere that weekend, beers are on me.

Big Blue is probably the play on the other one. I haven’t been to Boone’s Trace since it was called The Bull, but its a fun course where you can score. Big Blue keeps you close-ish to Kearney too. When you get to Louisville I’d go Nevel Meade if you aren’t geographically restricted. Depends where you will be in a way. Have to book that time early though, they get busy.

Agreed Kearney and Big Blue are the plays in Lex.

The weekend you’re in Louisville, try and get on at Nevel Meade. It’s about 25 minutes from the Fairgrounds and/or KIVA - which I assume is where your wife’s teams will be playing (had a girlfriend in HS that was a volleyball recruit - spent many afternoons watching in those gyms).

Nevel Meade is awesome design and always in great conditioned. You can walk it for $40ish and would say the value is worth double that.
