As Louisville adjacent courses, I’d add Oldham County Country Club and Henry County Country Club.
Been a while since I lived there but Irish Rover was one of our favorites.
Depends on food type - I would typically send folks to Market Street tons of options and near multiple distilleries and breweries. Feast (bbq), Grind (burgers), there is a new Emmy squared pizza there, an awesome Cuban joint and a lot more. On “must see” what kind of stuff are you looking for? Main Street has a number of different bourbon experiences if you are in to that. You can check out the art gallery at 21c and they have a great bar. The Frazier history museum has a big bourbon display… also downtown Jeffersonville, IN is just across the big four walking bridge, good food and stuff over there as welll. happy to give you other Recs if you have an idea of what you want. If you are around for donuts i swear by North Line coffee and donuts. I also ask people to seek out please and thank you - they make the best chocolate chip cookies on earth. It’s $$ but incredible. If you are more in to beer I can rummage up a list of the spots to hit, they are a bit spread out, but from market street just east toward Baxter Avenue there’s a ton that’s close and really good.
I’ll be staying at The Galt House Hotel and I’m mostly looking for things I can walk to. I won’t be in town until late afternoon tomorrow because I’ve got a 9 hour drive. I work at a whiskey distillery and will only be around for a couple days to pick up some vital equipment from a supplier. I’m hoping to check out some good bourbon bars or cocktail bars. Looking more so for specific recommendations on those types of places as well as places I should avoid.
You would be within walking distance of Old Forester and Angels Envy I believe if you are at the Galt House.
I don’t frequent downtown a lot as I live in the suburbs and work at home, but I know Down One, Sidebar, and Merle’s would have good selection. I’m fairly certain the Galt House has a nice bourbon bar and Jeff Ruby’s is right there at the Galt House as well.
Distil is a hotel down close to Old Forester is there because of Whiskey Row, so I would imagine they have a nice bar as well.
Justin’s house of bourbon is downtown somewhere but I’m not sure exactly where as it hasn’t been there super long. I’d call it more of a tasting museum based on other reports but not sure exactly.
I don’t live in Louisville, but I almost always go to the Troll Pub anytime I’m in town for a concert at the Yum Center or a Bats game. Awesome food and a decent beer menu.
Yep - agree with the above post - Justin’s House of bourbon is at first and market I believe - distil hotel would be the closest, it is a super premium hotel with a nice bar, they have a second floor bar if it’s open that is cool. Market street is about a mile from where you will be. Easy to drive and park and have tons of options. I’d still suggest 21c bar as a spot to check out - (I’m into art and design so may not be your scene, but it’s unique and they have a great bourbon selection.) The food scene is a little tough downtown right now. Doc Crows should be open it’s next door to old forrester - solid food incredible bourbon bar. The coolest speakeasy called Hell or High water was on Washington street if they are open that spot to me is worth it it’s in the basement of my office building we went there a lot. 8up is a hotel bar, they have a sweet rooftop with a nice bar. You could visit Michters, Evan Williams, Angels Envy and Old Forrester all walking from your hotel. No where I’d say stay away from - if you are on main, East market etc. it’s just a normal downtown. Not a ton of people back yet, so doubt anything will be packed, but they may be short staffed.
All the good suggestions are taken!!
What can anybody tell me about Covered Bridge? Playing Friday so I can live bet on the ryder cup.
I play there most Saturday’s. Should be in great shape, they have kept the greens pretty firm and quick for the past year. How detailed do you want to go and what time are you playing haha?
I’m playing Friday morning around 9. I’m a 20 HCP who has been getting better through lessons, so I guess a recommendation on what tees to play and any hidden quirks you wouldn’t notice the 1st time.
Got it - No doubt if you are a 20 I’d recommend playing the second tees, unless you bash it off the tee, I’m a 7 and play the whites and sometimes greys and love it. They have a combo grey/white option that’s in the middle. My 15 handicap friends use that and like it a lot.
It is all pretty straight forward. Like most places missing short is better than long. They have GPS in the carts so none of that is tricky. Its a pretty forgiving place off the tee I think (a few parallel holes, so if you bring in a big right miss (or left) you should be okay. A few holes where water comes into play, hole 3-obviously infront of you, but you can airmail the green water goes around back. When on hole 3 tee look to the right and scpe out the pin location on hole 5, its a super deep green and helpful to recognize how far back o up that pin is. Hole 5 specifically can be sneaky, water is reachable on all of the short, i consider it a true 3-shot par 5. Hole 8 is my arch nemesis. 10-11 are the tightest tee shots of the day, most of the rest of the round I think feels pretty fair. If the weather is good try their patio for lunch/a beer. It overlooks 9 and 18 greens, both fun par fives to watch people come in on. If you like to walk you for sure can, back nine has more hills than the front - front is literally flat except coming back up from 9 green. biggest hill is goin down to the course from the clubhouse. I really enjoy the course, have fun!
I enjoyed watching @Soly and @djpie romp (possibly limp?) around Valhalla on the finale of the Ryder Cup Road Trip series. I was too young to appreciate the 2008 event, but it was fun seeing the enthusiasm of everyone involved and listening to Azinger remember the passion from the city I now call home!
I feel for Soly missing that tee shot left on 18. The two times I have gotten a chance to play Valhalla, I’ve missed in the mega bunker left…really a buzzkill when you’re trying to make a memorable birdie!
Only played there once, somehow it was within the first 2 years of me ever playing, and I swung and missed on the 18th tee. My best friends and the caddies found it quite comical
I was able to attend 2008 practice rounds, still have the hat clip ball marker. We get out there once a year or so now… it’s like $300 with cart and forecaddie, but is a major C-suite Mecca. Practice facility is incredible.
Valhalla is definitely a course I’m wanting to get out to at some point. I’ve tried bidding on it once or twice at charity auctions, just never get the winning bid. Where I’m at in Southern Indiana, most auctions have packages for Victoria National instead of Valhalla though.
I have played it twice, great course, awesome facilities. I think it’s worth $300 if you play it every few years or so.
Headed down to visit a buddy in Nashville in a couple weeks. Any courses worth checking out on our way in the southern part of the state?
if you’re on 65 might as well stop at kenny perry’s country creek. it won’t blow you away but it’s neat.
