Roll Call: KC Area

Let me know when you have the time, I’ve been meaning to get back out there for awhile. Was my go-to course when I first moved to KC, pro shop guis were always really good at mixing me in as a single on the weekends or pairing me up with a decent game. Big boy ballpark from the way backs too (not planning on that again)

I assume this is correct. Falcon Ridge’s tee sheet is packed since there’s fewer tee times available due to longer intervals, single cart availability, and lots of people “working” from home. They raised the guest rate temporarily to try to keep more times for available for members.

I might be up for that…but it’s hard to do when I can go play for “free” 5 min from my house.

Same here but variety is needed sometimes, you know?

For sure…that’s what KGA is for!

New ownership at Hillcrest. From the website:

Hillcrest Golf Course boasts a championship golf course that has hosted the likes of Hogan, Palmer, and Kansas City’s own Tom Watson. In 2020, an exciting new era began at Hillcrest:
Local legend and golf expert, Douglas Price, former President of Price Brothers, has purchased the world-famous, historic Hillcrest Club and has hit the ground running like no other course owner in town. He has immediately gone to work addressing the needs of the club with the goal of returning it to the forefront of country club golf in Kansas City. Designed by the nationally renowned architect Donald Ross, his only Missouri course is a brilliant gem, boasting some of the most scenic views in the area. Playing this remote tree-lined course, you will instantly feel as if you’ve left the chaotic city landscape and strolled onto a beautiful rolling countryside.
With memberships starting at $245 per month plus tax, there is no better offer available in the area.

Wonder who wrote the bolded copy…

Still have yet to play a round of golf this year, let alone get my golf bag out of storage. $65 for Hillcrest is ridiculous. That place needs a huge buyer who can shut it down for a year to do a major overhaul.

Hoping the new owner pours a bunch of money into it, tries to drive an increase in membership and take it private…allowing me to swoop in a buy it for $.25/$1 and actually fix what matters and make it public again.

You might be right. The rapid price change has just been very strange. 2-3 weeks ago, it was in the $35 range, then it jumped to $50 but decreasing throughout the day, then $50 all day, and now $65 all day. The one thing that has stayed the same, though, is their wide-open tee sheet (which is why I played there a few times last month when everywhere else was crazy busy).

I like Hillcrest a lot, despite its shortcomings. It’s not my favorite course in town by any means, but I’m interested to see what’ll become of it. The website right now is advertising membership starting at $245/month. Huh.

It’s always been in pretty good shape since I’ve been playing it the last few years. St. Andrews is usually in good shape too considering how many public rounds they get a year.

Dubs can be fun from any of the tee boxes.

So, I was definitely one of the suckers who played at the $65 rate today. What can you do? Buddies wanted to get out there; it didn’t seem like any other place in town had a tee time open, and I’ve got minimal else to do.

But friends, we have a developing situation…

We walk up, and a guy introduces himself as the new owner as of yesterday (presumably Douglas Price?), and all he talked about was how he wanted to copy Top Golf and turn Hillcrest into… that. Whatever that may be. He alluded to having some games like bags, horseshoes, and a more lively patio with some live music. And that’ll be fine! The place could probably rid itself of a slightly stuffy country club vibe.

They’ve redone some bunkers, and look like they’ll be getting to all of them, or maybe they’re just replacing some sand; I have no idea. But it’s that Masters white sand that is blinding to look at, and it’s not great to play out of. Hopefully they re-build them right, though. But I’m fairly convinced, given the above, we won’t see this Ross gem restored as we’d like.

On the pricing, he straight up said he was going to dynamic pricing where the season will be more expensive (I think he’ll figure out what’s too expensive soon), and then offseason rates will be lower. It’s whatever… and by whatever, I mean capitalism.

But since I’ve played that course a few times in the last couple weeks, I’m actually starting to love some of the holes, or really, some of the greens. It’s made me realize how important green complexes are to the overall enjoyment of the course.

Oh, one more thing. He is providing push carts for people (with a fee, but he gave them out today), and that was cool to see everyone walking/using those.

Okay, I’m going to go google Douglas Price KC golf legend now.

One more one more thing: I heard this, but didn’t believe it until I went to the website. They’re offering season passes (no memberships) and May 1-October 31 is $3000. Yes, that’s $500 a month, and only for those 6 months. Compare that to $1200 for the year for Swope/HOA/Minor Park.

Yikes.

So bizarre.

What the fucccccc

Holy Hell! $400/month offseason rate. Really want to love the course, but at that rate, im out. plus given the fact that he is going to turn it into a circus instead of the classic course it should be. Shame if true.

That is absolutely crazy talk.

That is insane. And did they really say “offing” instead of “offering”? :joy:

The guy had a very “fly by the seat of his pants” feel, without much editing, so… this is perfect.

Seems like they misspelled ‘shitty commercial real estate guy’

Unless he has very deep pockets, this seems primed for another sale in 18mos.
