Roll Call: KC Area

has anyone actually heard of that company before reading that article?

Yes, and I’m shocked they haven’t rug pulled everyone yet

Yeah I heard of them a couple years back. Sounded like a scam, never expected them to be involved in a course I actually care about.

My initial reactions:

  • Shit must be going poorly for RH and crew if they are having bring in a Crypto group
  • LinksDAO might be masquerading as a group of progressive people trying to bring private golf back to the common golfer when in reality its just a group of rich people looking for a place to put their assets and they thought a golf NFT sounded fun, so there is zero chance this change in “ownership” helps the common golfer get to play a renovated Hillcrest
  • Because of the above, I doubt this changes the plan to nuke the original Ross design at all and make Hillcrest ultra-private.
  • Bringing in LinksDAO is probably a last ditch effort by RH and crew to maintain this “Ultra-Private Country Club” plan they have which I’m guessing many investors thought would fail based on the thoughts some in this thread have brought up along with a lack of interest from people they sent that pretentious membership packet too this past summer.

I have the exact same thoughts. Partnering with LinksDAO seems like a way for the current ownership to get an influx of cash without having to keep pushing for local membership/try to convince a bank to provide the funding.
As I have said before, I am very confused on their plan in general. Seems like a ton of money to spend to get a golf course that doesn’t seem drastically better and establish an incredibly expensive golf only club that doesn’t seem like a fit for a broad swath of people (see families) that usually join private clubs.
I know people have used Oakwood as an example of this working in that general area, but Oakwood already had an established membership base and still offers all the amenities of country club (pool, dining, tennis, etc).
I really hope that at some point they pivot to something more similar to Oakwood (full service club that is golf centric), but I do not have any faith in that occurring.

KC guis,

Need downtown dinner recs, coming to town for a night next weekend with the wife.

Thanks in advance.

Downtown has some great spots. The Town Company and Farina are some good upper scale spots. I also like City Barrel, Brown & Loe, Anton’s, and Westside Local. Plenty of other more casual spots like Town Topic, Kobe Q, and Pigwich that are great. If you want a food hall experience, there’s a place called Parlor that has a few food kitches and good drinks with an overall pretty cool atmosphere. It’s also nearby the brewery district so plenty of places to hit afterward that are walking distance. Enjoy KC!

I’d also ask what you mean by downtown (is midtown/crossroads off limits?) and if you have a car or need something close to the streetcar line or if you’d uber, etc.

and budget and type of food as well

Staying at the downtown Marriott, seeing a show Friday at The Midland Theatre.

Perfect world: walkable between both. But we will have a car, so don’t rule out something we’d need to drive to if it’s worth it.

Open on food type and budget isn’t a big concern, as it’s a quick trip sans child so we’ll indulge.

my suggestion would be to hop on the streetcar and go to Novel. it’s a short ride (and walk from the streetcar) with great food and drinks and also around a bunch of bars/breweries where you can go before and after

The streetcar is free to ride, so that will open up plenty of walkable options. No need to drive outside downtown in my opinion.

Is the streetcar just a hop on / hop off sorta deal?

absolutely. runs every 10 min or so. just walk to a stop, jump on, and get off when you need to at whatever stop. it’s highly used on weekend nights

Exactly. No tickets or anything. It can get a little crowded, but moreso when it’s warmer temps and more people downtown.

The Frog is always great. Putting in a plug for Affare as well.

It’s more of a cafe situation but Mildred’s is a great spot for something between a coffee shop and a full on brunch

Affare is closed next weekend crazy enough. (I only know this because I looked to see if they still did brunch)

If you’re looking for a relatively quick meal for lunch or whatever, KC Taco Company is legit and can take the street car the other way.

my brunch rec is Happy Gillis. you’d have to drive there as it’s not walkable from the streetcar line, but it’s a phenomenal small spot in Columbus Park just northeast of downtown. menu is simple but everything I’ve had thee has been great

Brunch will likely be on the way outta town, so a drive is no issue. Thank you!!

Happy Gillis slaps. Depends on iffin the partner wants it funky or fancy, but an absurd brunch can be had at Bristol there in the P&L just east of the Marriott. A greasy spoon just off 35 in KCK is Dagwoods. Again, slaps. There’s yer red and blue brunch pills. I could list others but a good to great brunch can be found all over KC. The one midwestern thing we do well is brunch. And BBQ…

And then there’s both, of course.
