Hey man welcome to KC. I was in a similar position to you a couple years ago fresh out of Iowa State.
The public offerings in OP (Heritage Park, Sykes Lady, St. Andrews) are all solid courses. Swope Memorial is a favorite amongst this crowd. Like you said courses here are pretty busy and you need to plan ahead to get times. And you’ll prolly need to get the patron card for St andys/lady if you want to play there.
The KC30 pass is a great deal. $450(5 month duration) for unlimited golf at Swope, Minor, Heart of America, and Hodge part for individuals under 30 years old. I’ve gotten it for the last couple years and always get value out of it.
The Great Plains Golf Club is the local NLU Roost. Basically we just put on events for the locals (+NE and IA). Do you have a GHIN index? Or at least a score history? All our events are net.
We have a discord too that is a bit more active then this thread. Guys looking for groups or just a range session. Shoot me a DM if you want to join.
TLDR: Public golf here is okay, but busy. Talk to guis on here or our discord to meet people and plan some tee times. Most of us suck at golf too.
I’ll play at St Andrews in their Monday after work league which is down in your neck of the woods. We frequently are missing one of our foursome so I’ll let you know next time!
The best way to get on the Overland Park courses are to get a patron card ($45) that gives you a discount and lets you book rounds 7 days in advance instead of 6 days. Alternatively, if you’re cool to play with randoms, you can usually get online the night before or morning of the day you want to play and fill a cancellation.
@GreatPlainsGC I’m a Supercell member but down in Springfield, MO for work. Running a golf tournament tomorrow (6/26) at Highland Springs CC where they play the longest running Korn Ferry event. The place is MINT! I have paid-for spots available on the team I’ve entered if anyone here is up for a drive down to SPR. Hit me on my cell 405-761-2000 if you want to play
The current plan is for it to stay open going forward. They kept 11 original holes and converted their 9 hole executive course into 7 full length holes to fill out the 18. No clue how good a job was done on all of it.
I asked the membership director in November. This was her response at that time:
“I have attached the new layout we will transition to once the development finally breaks ground on the current front 9 of our 18- hole Championship Course. The West 9 Executive Course on the other side of Antioch has already been renovated into 7 Championship level holes to replace the ones we will eventually lose to the development. The start date is still unclear, as it has been over the last 6 years I’ve been here.”
When I was a member there, they didn’t let you hit driver off the practice tees if you hit it over ~250yards. Plus there was only like 10 tees and they rarely went to grass. Not a great practice area, but if you live close to it, I get it…
I’m 5 minutes from there and have no shot at getting into milburn so I’d be there often if it was public. Though the driver situation is hilarious for a private club
A decent number of the old clubs have pretty bad range setups because of when they were built. Not sure if any have a 250 yard restriction, but a lot are pretty small for modern equipment and have nets. If you measure 300 yards from the middle of the range tees at Milburn, KCCC, MHCC, or IHCC, you’ll end up on off the back of them.
Has anyone played Lake Valley GC down at lake of the Ozarks? Playing the MO 4 ball this weekend and won’t be able to get in a practice round. Course looks kind of quirky from google maps so any intel would be appreciated. Thanks!
Have played it several times. Quirky yes, but not unfair. What you see is what you get. Greens traditionally roll true but a bit slower than Kinderhook across the road. It would be similar to a Minor Park, Tomahawk Hills, etc in my opinion.
My in laws have a place at “The Hook” and we always play LV as the second course of the day.
In the pantheon of courses at the lake it’s def playable and fun, but it is what it is
The very back of KCCC range appears to be 300, but who cares when you can just put a couple giant trees right in the middle!
Trees solve architecture problems AND range problems!
This might be for the contrarian thread, but I dig trees on ranges. In fact the more random shit on the range the better, shoutout the VW at the range in Salome, Texas.
