Roll Call: KC Area

Cabo del Sol had a red little shag wagon to fire balls at which was awesome.

Was a good time! Apologies you had to witness a bit of an Ian Baker-Finch at Troon situation from yours truly out there…

Absolute piss fest in the member member today. A gross day but good results. Lotta fits and starts.

Hope everyone else’s course faired better than the Deuce did with all the rain yesterday. Hole 6 will be closed for the foreseeable future…

GOOD GOD! How much rain did y’all get?

4+ inches, but most of it came in a single hour I guess. I was down at Lake Valley GC wondering how a two man best ball team could shoot -23 for 36 holes. Very impressive stuff. My partner and I putted like absolute donkeys all weekend.

Holy!! We had club championship get rained out midway through yesterday at Tiffany and I thought this was ugly. Wishing grounds crew the best of luck!

What did you think of place? I don’t hate it, we play it a lot as a second course of day

In my mind - minus Porto Cima of course - its prob the 3rd/4th best course at the Lake

I really enjoyed it, great course for that format. I was surprised by how few full short irons/wedges I hit over the two days, seemed like I wore out my long irons/hybrids and then was chipping/pitching greenside. I had wedges into 8 & 12 and I think that’s it.

Notes/observations:
-the fairways and rough had a ton of thatch in them that made it really hard to get good contact on the ball, especially the rough. I don’t know that I advanced one more than about 175 out of the rough all weekend.
-the greens were super slow uphill but really fast downhill. We both found them difficult to putt. Not sure if it was the pin positions or our approaches but it felt like most of our putts had a lot of break around the holes.
-it drains really well, we were off path all Sunday even after a decent rainstorm went through in the morning.
-13 blue tee is kind of Mickey Mouse, can’t see the green or pin from the box. Not a fan.
-missing back right on 18 to a back left pin might be the deadest I’ve ever been on a golf course where I wasn’t in a hazard. Just 1,000% hosed.

I haven’t played Kinderhook and while Porto is much better I’d still be happy to play LV again on my next trip to the lake. Big recommendation if anyone is looking for a place to play.

My in laws have a place at ‘Hook on 5th fairway (it’s legit but really hard) my rents stay super close to The Oaks. I’ve played every course down there and rank them as such:

Porto Cima
‘Hook (#5 ranked public in MO)
Oaks
Osage National
Lake Valley
Eldon (if you wanna drive 30 min)
Bear Creek
Indian Rock

Redfield is a delight. When I played it a couple years ago it was in perfect nick.

gotta be honest, had to look that one up

As a person that has lived in Missouri most of my life I am more than a little surprised that I didn’t know where Eugene was

Friend of mine loves Redfield. I told him of course he does, all the trouble is left on that golf course and you always go right…

good. i go back now, might not appreciate it as much… played it back three or four years ago when i sliced the ball.

Going to be in the area in 2 weeks, Sept 8-9th. Not entirely sure what my plan is, U of I vs KU football game Friday night for sure and might be able to sneak out for a round very early Saturday AM. Any suggestions on courses I might be able to get out in the first few tee times?

Most courses allow tee times six days in advance for non-members so you’ll probably just have to hop online and see what you can snag. Depending on where you’re staying Swope Memorial is always popular, but if you get outside of the city Sycamore Ridge, Stone Canyon, Tiffany Greens and Shoal Creek are all always a good time.

Unfortunately seems like golf is going to be out of the question for me, still may hit Ben up for a little loop at BCN, but now thinking the wife and myself will spend Friday afternoon in KC before heading to Lawrence for the game.

Any suggestions on things to do, places to grab a bite, etc? I’m looking at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum for myself and I’m sure she won’t find that overly interesting, so any places your wives/girlfriends/significant others enjoy?

NLBM is a fantastic stop. It is also Irish fest this weekend which is always a fun time. There are a ton of breweries and Boulevard has good tours, if you are into that type of thing.
