Cool! I’ve always wanted to play all three nines out there.

Bit of a tough scene out here. Club owners based out of Arkansas are shrinking the course in favor of building more apartments. Clubhouse is literally collapsing. Place is in desperate need of an overhaul.

How are they ‘collapsing the course’?

The Lindsey boys are multifamily building owners that happen to own a few golf courses mostly to try and rent some more units in the area. Never played Shawnee G&CC but my experience with other courses of theirs have been… “not great” would be putting it kindly.

They are shrinking the course for more apartments, yes, but I was not being metaphorical re: the clubhouse collapsing.

For anyone who hasn’t played Oakwood CC yet, super cool course and get out there if you have an opportunity. @ericrbens was nice enough to have me out there this afternoon. I had a great time chatting golf and playing that course with him.

The shaved down slopes around a bunch of the greens allow for some sweet bank shots that you don’t really see at any other courses in the area, and the fairway slopes rival the hilliest courses in the area. Also, had a good GPGC match with him that went down to the 17th hole.

Glad we could make it work and good playing. Our match yesterday featured significantly better golf than my club match play match this morning that also ended on 17.

Oakwood is right by my business, I’ve heard great things about the course. If you need another match rival @ericrbens hit me up!

Not sure who’s all been out to Hillcrest this year but I finally got out to that Donald Ross beauty this past Saturday morning and man was it in fantastic shape. The greens were rolling and may be the best public greens I’ve played on since 2020 at Ironhorse. I luckily had an early 7:15 tee time and proudly fired a 74 before the heat kicked in. I know the price is sort of premium ($65-70) but I’d much rather play that gem than $70 at Shoal or $100 at Ironhorse currently.

@VinnyG and I get the same a couple weeks back re the conditions. Sucks they haven’t taken the clubhouse up to what it could be.

Count me in for a GPGC even there in fall with a social gathering at Hoopers post round.

Is it doing better? That’s really good news. I played it in the fall of 2020 and it was tuff. I really want to play it when it doesn’t look like hell, this may convince me to do the Swope/Hillcrest weekend double.

Guy in the pro shop said when the new owner took over 2-2.5 years ago that the owner put all money into the course and nothing into the insides yet which honestly by my accords I don’t care what the inside looks like as long as I can get a beer and solid hot dog at the turn I’m glad they got it back from what GreatLife destroyed it. Swope/Hillcrest double weekend could make for a really fun Fall GPGC Championship Event. 36 would be a blast at those two tracks, happy to help set that up if we need Fall ideas @tnord

NOW WE ARE TALKING! Post round dinner at Chellys (the best Mexican joint in the city (I will die on this hill until proven otherwise)) and then we can navigate to Walsh’s Corner Cocktails for some shuffleboard.

I also played it recently and totally agree. With each visit it keeps improving. The old school layout is really fun and the greens are fantastic. One thing to note though is I gotta warm up the vocal cords on the drive there so I can confidently proclaim “fore” when the big right miss rears its ugly head on holes 4 and 8. The tight routing means no one is safe out there.

The last time I played Swope, we went to a bbq join for lunch before heading to Hillcrest. Hindsight not a good move because we were not feeling good for the 2nd 18, but it was damn good. I can’t remember what it was called, but it wasn’t far, and maybe just west of Swope

I hope Hillcrest does great! I worked there 2002 and it was amazing. Back then it was private and had a great membership. Grounds crew was some of the best in the city, and in later years took big time jobs. Great lay out and if they get the greens back to where they were 20 years ago, it would be fun to play again! I played her about 10 years ago and it was not good for me. It is like see your prom date 20 years later. Just not the same.

Great analogy here is that Great Life is like adding 20 haggard years of life to your prom date (Donald Ross golf course) in NE KS/NW MO.

BBs lawn side? Fantastic place and ambiance, great place for live blues!
