Same thing at Milburn. Waiting list for both golf and social members.
This Kansas, Ben. Not Oklahoma, bruh.
OK, so here is my unofficial official breakdown, strap in…
First of all… WHAT …A…TRIP.
Crazy good time with just me and three other guys. All hardcore golfers. Our passion for the game does outweigh our talent, although we can all pull off some good strings of holes. As a forward, I play at a 12 HCP so my experience will prob be way different than yours. We essentially did all of TS Bandon, just in a different order. Here we go…
Flew into Eugene from KC (Through DEN) on friday AM. With drive we got to town of Bandon (not resort) about 8 pm local. Was 2.5 hour drive for us. Hopped around dive bars and met locals, had a good time. Played Crossings next day, very underrated course with some awesome views. Solid place to start the trip. Dining out again in downtown Bandon was fun and quirky and locals all very friendly. Following day we had some time to kill before a 3 pm Dunes tee time so we went to resort early, couldn’t check in yet so went to range and they actually have a free 9 hole short course there called “shortys” that was fun in its own right. MASSIVE putting green and range. Good stuff. Played Dunes on first day and got the full wind treatment. 20 mph in all directions, extra clubs everywhere. Fun course, but man was the wind something. Next day we had a 9 AM Sheep Ranch wh/ was my fav course of the bunch and super fun (saw the owner playing one hole next to us) and an 3:30 Trails time with caddies. we logged 15 miles that day. Trails was really cool since it’s the only inland course and played much more like it. Trees everywhere, very scenic. Like a Crossings on steroids to me. Those caddies came in handy that day! Day 3 we had Old Mac at 9 AM and wind was insane again. True scottish course wh/ I loved and my partners hated. Just don’t get that many places, also possibly the most scenic next to sheep. Played Punchbowl (MASSIVE putting/betting/drinking/smoking) course at Pac Dunes clubhouse. What a great time and way to wind down, its free, the drinks are obviously not. Last golf day there we did Pac Dunes which i really really liked. Very challenging though with bunkers in all the wrong spots for me. Really the most well kept course. Did Preserve after to wind down the day and the trip. I’m prob in the minority but i wanted more out of preserve and thought it was going to be more short holes – like all under 125 or so, but there are some healthy ones out there with the wind. We played a lot of individual gambling/drinking games there as well. Last day out we did swag shopping and headed back to eugene for noon flight that got me back here in KC at 9 pm.
Food really good, not great. Liked Sheep for Breakfast, Trails Lunch, Pac Dunes for dinner. Thought McKees was overrated. We ate everywhere multiple times/meals.
Swag is expensive but really cool all at same time. Drinks are crazy expensive, but whatever.
Would do it again and change how i did it with those i went with. Loved the timeframe we did it in 6 days total, didn’t have to do 36 every day. Would prob use caddies more if I went back, but we all had yardage books so it was fine. The trip wasn’t about the scores. My buddy made HIO on Pac #11. i can go on forever about my fave parts of every course and all the details, happy to share if people want it.
I encourage anyone who golfs for the love of being out there to go.
Off-topic, but anyone have experience with Kerns Homebuilders, Patriot Homes KC, Integrity Homebuilders or Inspired Homes? Future Mrs. and I are sniffing around at building in a community up north.
Awesome course. Very tough - the wind can torment you all day.
Anyone headed to Blue Hills for the korn ferry event next weekend? I think I’m going to try to get there on Saturday.
I’m volunteering as a marshal in it. Really just wanted an opportunity to play the course. If you volunteer 12+ hours you get invited to play the course later in the year. Might have made a mistake signing up as marshal but how bad can it be…
I’m going to try and find a semi-dry window to attend on the weekend, or afternoon on Thurs/Fri is a possibility also. But I’m close enough I could walk there or just have the wife drop me off without having to park and shuttle in.
Glad I didn’t take time off work to caddy.
Yep I’m tentatively working my schedule to go Friday afternoon if it’s not raining
this might be the worst forecast I’ve ever seen. we escaped yesterday, but not today.
seems like a good time to ask the question…which courses in KC actually drain well? Inlaws are coming this week if and I’d like to try and get a round in somewhere if we can find a dry window, but things aren’t looking good.
Does anywhere in rocky, clay soil KC actually get water off the course in an effective manner?
Brother and I are planning to go on Friday but that may not happen due to weather messing up other events this for me this week.
qualifying is going on right now at Creekmoor. It is very wet! but the course is in great shape. Forgot the total number of guys but they are playing for 8 spots. Been watching them all weekend hit balls and playing, these are the guys that are just trying to make it and they are really good!
The weird thing, too, is the rain chances are pretty low each day. Yesterday was brutal driving into church and then a two-hour drive west to Manhattan.
well, I guess I’ve got a bag at least for today/Thurs/Fri of KFT. My daughter has her dance recital on Sat so I don’t think I can do it on the weekend. I should be out there at 1130 today for practice round with Derek Ackerman. Hopefully we’ll run into each other.
SO…I went out and watched some of the qualifying yesterday. These guys are good and they have no place to play, which is crazy. 8 spots and -6 and -5 got in, that is pretty good with the weather yesterday. However I did not think they played it back as far as they should. On of the guys said it was around 6,900, he played it at 7,200 in his practice round. The tee’s we play are 6,800 and we don’t even play the same game as these guys do.
I have to say I’m not prepared to be a caddy. Shoe options are not ideal. I can either be “that guy” with golf shoes on for some water protection. Or I can wear some tennis shoes and have wet feet. I’m going this route for comfort sake, and so I’m not stomping around on soft greens even with “spikeless” shoes.
The other thing I just realized gathering up my gear is I not only have to carry rain gear, water bottle, food, and etc for the player, but I have to carry all that shit for myself also. Or I could lighten the load and just be wet.
It looks like this may be Derek’s first KFT event, so maybe I’ll get a nice stand bag? He’s had some good results recently on PGA Australia…should be fun.
i’ll be rocking the BCN towel unless instructed otherwise.
This is the second time at Blue Hills, and it sucks they have combatted rain both times. I guess that is to be expected when you move the KC event to mid-May.
Just run to cabelas and get you a pair of merrill hiking shoes. Wore them in Ireland coupled with lightweight wool hiking socks and you never have wet feet.
BCN lol
I think you were a few groups behind me this morning. I completely randomly ended up with …drumroll… Grayson Murray. We teed off a bit before 11:00 just playing the front. Unsure what scripting/towel option I’m going with since I don’t think NLU, BCN, or anyone else wants to be associated with Mr. Murray. I actually don’t mind the big staff bag this week since it’s got space for all the rain gear that hopefully won’t be necessary. Also planning to switch to the hiking shoes the rest of the week because the normal running shoes were not up to the task today.
Tee times just went up, and I’ve got noon Thursday off 1 and 6:45 AM Friday off 10. I was hoping for the opposite AM Thursday/PM Friday, and not thrilled to get the earliest possible time on Friday morning too.
