I’ve played there a few times. It had a lot of potential to be a fantastic hidden gem but the owner never wanted to spend any money on it.
quick takes on Colbert Hills over in the Little Apple? i’ve never played it…
Really Difficult. Great condition. Purple Paw Bunker.
in what context?
I wouldn’t drive out there just to play it, but if I was already there I would.
Not a huge fan.
Nothing special, it was fine. Purple bunker major photo op, also tons of ProV’s in the junk. Or so I’ve heard from my friends who spent plenty of time off the fairway.
whats yer beef with it?
unwalkable. penal. slow. poor routing. and gimmicky at times.
does that cover it?
It’s worth a trip. It’s a huge course with great views and it’s usually in really good shape. The facility is ridiculously nice.
Don’t over analyze it; it’s consistently ranked by numerous rankings as one of the best courses in Kansas.
yeah… no doesnt sounds too pleasant. you had me at unwalkable… i dont mind the gimmicks, once a round i suppose… but penal, poor routing… and slow… no thanks. if i’m in town curiosity might get the better of me, but was thinking of stopping there on my way out west to play Buffalo Dunes on trek to Denver… thanks
as @HaveOuimet alluded to, it is somewhat personal taste. some people love it, I just don’t. It is cool land. But it’s laid out for housing (that a friend of mine builds), and big dramatic views from the tee. As a result, I think the routing stinks.
It’s not lacking in challenge, and there are some cool shots. But if I lived in town I’d probably play at MCC rather than Colbert.
Buffalo on the other hand I’ve heard is great. Heard good things about Mariah Hills out that way also.
I have some comments for you:
-
colbert, as has been stated is laid out for housing development. Those beautiful vistas are definitely meant for the associate AD for social media’s screened in patio more than your tee ball, but they are nice. Definitely unwalkable, to make room for the development there are some wild ‘walks’ from tees to greens, no idea how the KSU kids do it. Some holes feel like they’re not even on the same property.

buffalo dunes is a great course. Also somewhere that can hold it’s own when the wind is up. (Look at the symetra tour scores from a couple weeks ago, i think there were only 6 or 7 players under par). But it’s not just hard for the sake of being hard like I feel like Colbert is.

where are you going to denver from that you would drive through both MHK and GC??
Would stop at Sand Creek Station in Newton if you’re looking for a course to break up the drive to Denver. Buffalo is a wee bit out of the way.
This is a bucket list type of thing for a side project I’ve got going on. To and/or from the NLU event in Denver later this year. Just thinking about a meandering drive trip thru Kansas. Hesston is on the list. Buffalo Dunes. Now Mariah Hills looking at it online thanks to @tnord and his suggestion. And while in Denver gonna hit Wellshire, the public Ross there in town.
Mariah Hills is the hidden gem of hidden gems IMO. You’ll love it.
…why?
Homer.
- It’s been many years since I’ve played Mariah Hills, but definitely a good course.
- Even though I’ve never played Buffalo Dunes, I’ll give it a +1 due to everyone raving about it.
- Hesston will always hold a special place for me because that’s where I carded my only hole-in-one.
- If you do end up going through south central Kansas, Sand Creek Station is a must.
Boiling Springs if you can pull it off. #1 on my hit list.
loving all the recos everybody… the goal is to play all the best courses in Kansas… including that ‘best’ one in Hutch…
the bonkers golf landscape continues…
Blue Hills has now capped membership at 425, and downstroke has jumped again to $19k.
For reference, I joined 3/1/20 for $7500 and there were around 340 members. New superintendent is doing great so far and the course should be money for the KFT and going forward. I can’t even tell you how much sand has gone into/onto the greens this spring.
