Roll Call: KC Area

lol. this should be entertaining.

I went with the awkward looking, but functional asics. But they’re VERY blue and black and definitely look out of place. I have some new athletic shoes I’m not willing to trash yet. Or maybe a FJ flex might work, but they’re a bit small for me.

My guy brought a carry bag but holy hell was it loaded up with shit. Training aids, fifteen clubs, seemingly a dozen gloves, and half a dozen bottles of water. And it didn’t have any room in it. I carry all the time and this thing was bothering my shoulders by the end of it. Definitely no room in it for two sets of rain gear, extra towels, snacks, etc.

He made it through the Monday at creekmoor at -6, missed the monday last week by 1 I think, made it through US Open locals, and has had good finishes including a T8 on Australasia tour this year. He played well today (eagled the first hole), has a good game for this golf course, and a good natural feel on these greens. I expect him to play well.

I just hope I can stay out of his way.

We’re at 155pm Thurs, and 840 Friday.

I haven’t looked into logistics for Friday when I’m planning to attend. What’s this shuttle you’re talking about?

Edit: Ah, I see parking is going to be at Avila. That’ll be easy enough.

in the emails that go out to members, they’re directing people to parking at KC First Church of the Nazarene or Avila University. I thought there was mention of a shuttle in one of the emails, but I don’t see it in the one that went out this morning.

thinking about some of my comical gaffs in my first day as a pro-jock.

  1. I literally watched my guy rake a bunker.
  2. I handed my guy the putter cover and held onto the putter as if I was going to go putt out.

Other than that I think I did alright. I wish I would have done a better job marking the exact locations we hit balls to in the yardage book during the practice round. They’re not going to have tees in the same spot all 4 days, so it’d be nice to have specific yardages to work from.

Whats the yardage book situation at these KFT sites? Is it whatever the club has in the pro shop or does tour Sherpa map these out?

I don’t know. It looks like a normal tournament yardage book that I’ve purchased at other places. Numbers based on back of the back tee and such. Not the colorful pictures with little blurbs about the hole that you would typically find at a resort.

Does it have “J.I.C.Y.F.U” ?

I caddied once, in a mini tour event at Colbert Hills. The walk was f*cking atrocious, and I lost his 6i for about 10 holes until his wife was able to run back to find it. Don’t do that.

@shonseymp is quite literally a pro’s pro caddie, including multiple PGA Tour events and majors. I’m sure he’d love to offer some insight/tips if you have any questions or concerns.

This seems to explain that acronym (your first guess was correct)

yeah so I have all these fancy yardage book holders from various things, what the hell are all these straps for? :man_shrugging: Seems like I would just add the next page under the strap on the top flap so it opens to the hole we’re on, but what are all these straps on the bottom flap for?

I did ask my guy where he wants me to stand, which is a seemingly innocuous thing but I’d hate for that to be a source of discomfort. I got his yardages, I know what distance makes him uncomfortable, I know where the gaps in his bag are, I know what his natural shot is and from yesterday where the miss tends to be, I’ve got a bit of a contingency plan in mind because the tees aren’t going to be where they were yesterday. I need to touch base with him today and see if he wants to go over everything again.

Would it be a total faux pas to ask if I can bring my own bag to use? His bag doesn’t have enough room for rain gear and towels we’re going to need tomorrow. I’m a bit nervous about stepping it off and doing the mental math also.

1st one. 21 years ago I made my pro jock start in the Kathy Ireland Classic, LPGA event. That yardage book in hanging in my basement with two pages displayed, both with that saying on them.

and the straps are for you to not flip through all the pages, after you play the hole put them under the strap
on the bottom strap in the back page

Yeah the different straps are to hold down pages, maybe if you wanted the front 9 out but not the back, I also used it to hold in the pin sheet and other notes I’d written down.
Great that you asked him that, the more comfortable he is with you the better he will play. It can be a silly, no-shit observation, but just try to keep it simple enough. Chances are, if hes playing KFT, he can play golf and knows what he’s doing. Try to keep information to somewhat of a minimum, and one of the most important things I think you can do is present all info in a positive manner! Say things like “your line needs to be here” or “this is a great spot of the green to be putting from” instead of “don’t miss here” or even “you can miss here” because chances are they will miss there…
I wouldn’t ask to use your own bag… I know it sucks, but again his comfort lvl is more important than yours because it determines your paycheck.
Don’t be afraid to write down the math! Also great to have it written down for shots in the future for reference.
Who are you looping for?

yeah I get what the big top and bottom straps are for, but there’s another little one on mine I don’t know what to do with. Folding and tucking the pin sheet in there is a good idea.

This is something I’m trying to work on for sure, because it’s not the way my brain naturally works. Sometimes it took me a second to work it out in my head how to say what I wanted without using negative words like don’t, but rather “the preferred side of this pin to putt from is…” or “left side of this fairway is better…”

I try to shut up and let him do his thing, but he’s never played here and I play here all the time, so it’s definitely something I need to focus on this week.

I’m going through the book and doing the pre-math on the yardages from the back of the one up-box so I can have that on hand. I’m somewhat confused by the yardages on some holes are from the back of the back, but then it gives a separate number from the plates where available. Then are all the yardages on the page from those plates, or still from the back of the back box?

Derek Ackerman is my guy this week.

Normally, all measurements off the tee are from the back edge. There should be a notation on the Page (like an arrow or hash) showing the point it’s measuring off of. It will also sometimes show the plate yardage to give another point of reference.

Could you take a photo to show me? I think I know what you’re saying here but want to make sure.
I will say, I never used the plate numbers on tees, always stepped off whatever it was from the back, wrote it down, and would sub that number from all cover #'s and to hazards.
I think @anon81973724 has it covered here.

Which is why he has you on the bag! Obviously provide insight when you can, but paralysis by analysis is very real and I am very guilty of having done it before lol

I have the same book. It looks like a mix for some reason. Hole 5 (par 3) just has the numbers from plates, but the rest of the par 3s have the back of the box and any plates. I don’t have a pin sheet on me, so maybe that’s different, but it weird they’re not 100% consistent in the book. Thankfully the back plate on 5 is like two steps in front of the back of the box, so it’s not too tough to sort out.

Of the books I’ve seen, it’s very likely to have all the plates on par 3s marked on the book, that’s a number you want to have right on the tee. Why it’s not consistent just might be because it’s a KFT event yardage book :joy:

Jealous of you guys looping, I’d love to give that a whack.

Yeah I’m not worried they’re inaccurate or anything. Just confused why they don’t have the back of the box included on that particular hole and only that hole.

That plate marked 365, there are not those markings on every hole. But in the legend it mentions plates in a couple different places. I’m presuming, and based on what @anon81973724 said, that the layup numbers on this particular hole are still based on the back/back, not to the plate.

It’s something I definitely had circled to do at the start of the year, but normal life didn’t afford me the ability to commit for the entire week, so I didn’t sign up. Now that I’m a last minute fill in, I’m feeling guilty that I can’t put the time and work into it that I want to, especially since I think Derek can do well here.

back to the bag issue…what if I broached the subject about preparations for tomorrow, and asked if he felt like he had enough room in his bag for all the rain gear, towels, etc that he’s going to want? If he says he wished he had more storage, I can offer up to bring my regular bag, or I can offer to use my titleist staff bag, since he seems to be partnered up with titleist in some capacity.

again, I agree that making him comfortable is the priority, but maybe it would actually help him if I could carry more shit?

Exactly. Said differently, subtract 34 from those landing area marks to get to the number from the 365 plate.
