it happens everywhere…it even happened to one green at PD a few years back (though I’m not sure if it was as severe as this) but they figured out pretty quickly what was happening and were able to take steps to keep it alive.
I played the par 3 a few weeks ago and a marshal mentioned that somehow the mixture they applied was miscalculated. Luckily they didn’t apply to both courses.
Would assume that greenskeeper or worker has been talked to quite sternly…
Going to be that guy on this subject…
I’m headed to Bandon later this week for 6 days (no idea how I talked wife into letting that happen), but I’ve already given @sundaybag all the questions, so I can’t hardly bother him anymore. If anyone else out there has any tips/suggestions/etc that are valuable, please feel free to pass along. I may be just a little too excited about this.
hope to make a trip up to Bandon in the future, let us know how it goes!
I’ll be there in June. Have fun!
I just back from Bandon, it was a trip of lifetime. I went with my Dad and two brothers. I can’t wait to go back. It is what everyone says it is. Even if you play courses more than once they do not ever play the same. It is a golf playground and it was awesome!
Drove out to the old golf course in Louisburg yesterday just to take a look around. It’s been closed for 2 years and is now home to a herd of cattle. I never played the course, but man it looks like its a great piece of land. I wish someone would buy it and do something Sweetens-ish to it.
I see so many areas/pastures like that around the KC area and think what an awesome hole or course that could be.
The great thing is that it already has water on the course, drainage, clubhouse, parking lot, etc. I really wish I had the $$ to do something about it.
Every time I drive through the Flint Hills, can’t help but envision hole after hole after hole. Understand the soil is rocky at best, but damn. Could be world class!
How many acres does an 18 hole course require in general.
roughly 100.
100 acres would get you a very tight, 6300 yard course with a reasonable club house. 200 is a nice #.
This seems to be the sweetspot. I just checked and Merion East is only 126 acres so I would consider that to be the lower bound for anything thats not going to play super short for the modern game
Can’t believe you can buy 2,500 acres of land in KS for the same price as a small house on Jupiter Island, insane.
There is some sand out here too!
Wonder how much it would cost to build a #elite 9 holes. I know sweetens was around 2mm but that has to be low.
I can’t recall the source, likely a Yolk w/Doak episode, but I believe building an 18 hole golf course with modest facilities is a $3-$4M proposition.
Obviously very site dependent.
that also excludes the cost of the property itself, maintenance, and I believe a clubhouse. that’s what it costs to build a golf course, with irrigation et al
