Roll Call: KC Area

I’ ve witnessed Thompson make an ace one. I was standing on 5 green at LCC and he knocked one in on 11. His partner went fucking bonkers. But the guy in the other two ball calmly stated ‘thats a 1 for 2, so we’re still in the hole.’ He holds the course record, of 61. So thats not unbelieveable.

The Wamego guy maybe.

Mark Elliot played in the US Senior Open. I believe it was shot from the white tees at WCC, so 5600 yards or so. No raised cups. We actually have the flanges that sit 1" below the surface so putting is actually more difficult.

Back 9 at WCC is very tight off the tee. Front 9 has very small, tough greens.

I wasn’t there, so I can’t attest to the accuracy of the score. But, despite the yardage, WCC is far from a walk in the park.

Pretty good list.

Shoal Creek is an excellent track. Had some issue with the fairways last year when everyone had to deal with the freezes, but I’ve always enjoyed that course.

How bad is Hillcrest to play right now/are there carts available. I really want to play the Donald Ross track but know in here it’s been talked about the new owner being an idiot and the course maybe not being up to par but online it has a $48 for 18 and a cart in early afternoon on Saturday and I wanna pull the trigger. Any concerns for you that have played it this year?

For me, the value isn’t there at Hillcrest. I like to think I am very tolerant of course conditioning, but Hillcrest crosses the line for me as being a terrible value. It is a $25-$30 round value. $50 is insane for that place IMO.

Regarding the Ross - it has been all but stripped away at Hillcrest. You look at the drawing Ross did in the clubhouse then go play the course and it is nothing similar. The land movement is good and the only reason I’d ever consider playing it again (at $30).

On another note, my old club The Deuce just raised guest rates to $125 not including cart. That is an absolute mind blower. Like holy shit.

Yea, I’m pretty sure it was a ‘we really don’t want people bringing guests’ move. The Nat went to $175. Don’t expect to see it once ::gestures vaguely:: all this has settled down. Also, for more absurdity, for $125 that is walking only on the weekends

Has to be the move. Just not wanting any guests but will take the money if someone is paying.

I thought the $70-$75 or whatever it was seemed a bit high, but $125 seems like a strategic move.

Maybe so, for the quality of the course (I happen to like it but am biased and also know there are better values out there at publicly accessible courses) but it’s also the only private club I’ve ever seen with a guest fee under $100 so there is that as well.

Oh well, at any rate I can’t let any of my friends pay $125 to walk the deuce, that’s just madness so I guess I’ll be golfing with other members here and friends elsewhere.

Is it permanent? We went up to $80 from $50 (riding, but only 15 holes due to construction), but it’s temporary while there are tee time restrictions due to virus stuff. The reasoning is that they don’t want guests taking up tee times when members can’t always get out.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I love the deuce and it was always in awesome shape when I was out there. I paid the guest fee multiple times and it was what it was, but never thought it was a great value. Especially with Prairie Dunes being $125 guest fee. My old club Terradyne in Wichita had a lower guest rate, so I guess I came from a different place.

The Deuce is still semi private isn’t it? GolfNow always had deals for less then the guest fee which confused the hell out of me.

That was the definition of a tuff scene but luckily this is our 2nd season fully private. I think Woodside members and maybe Cerner folks still can get restricted tee times but no more GolfNow which is nice.

@ericrbens I would guess it is temporary but they did not mention that. I do know our tee sheet is insanely full these days so I would guess it is for similar reasons to your club

Yeah, I can’t justify having my friends out at that price.

Could have them play Swope and Sycamore for that.

Hey guys, first post here on the refuge after reading through this entire thread. Moved to KC from Houston in November & did the GL membership through the off season since conditions really don’t matter then. Have since joined Shadow as it fit what I like in a course. (Loved everything minus walkability) Looking forward to chatting with you all & hopefully getting a few rounds in.

Welcome, amigo. Glad to have you here.

How’s everything going in KC? This thread does contain BBQ recommendations should you need them. As a native Kansas Citian, happy to show you around once things get back to normal.

My pro just came from Shadow. Said the course was awesome, just kind of a drive to get there.

I felt the same way about Shadow when I was looking at places to join when I moved (back) to KC recently. Loved the course and the only downside was the walk from the clubhouse to 1 tee and 9 green to 10 tee. I ended up deciding on Falcon Ridge once the Covid stuff started purely for cost reasons. May re-evaluate things next year once things are relatively normal.

Sand Hills is $125 PER DAY incl. cart. :rofl:

Let’s go. How’s your Thursday look?

Well, people seem to either (a) be using the guest passes they already bought or (b) paying the guest fee for the Deuce right now…

@kcwolfhammer Just wanting to make sure you are seeing this thread.

Appreciate the warm welcome. Loving KC so far, just ready for things to inch back to normal to really explore the city. As far as BBQ goes, I’ve tried Q39, KC Joes, and Jack Stack. I’d rate them in that same order. Need to scroll back through and note the favorites in the thread.

@ericrbens
Agreed that the Clubhouse-1 & 9-10 are the absolute worst. The elevation can be brutal too on 1, 4, 12, 14-16 albeit they do have stairs on most of these holes. As a jr member Shadow was by far the best bang for the buck imo. Hallbrook, Milburn, IH, MH all wanted 2-5x initiation with similar or higher monthly dues. Driving in from PV only ~20m drive compared to my club in Houston which was 50% of the distance but took twice the time to get there.

@almostscratchonce
You replying to me lol? If so Thursday I’m good to play if we can tee off anytime before 1pm as I have to be in OP by 5:30. Have a time booked tomorrow at 4pm with 3 open spots at Shadow and would love to have any of you out if that works better.
