Best public in KC Metro? Hearing Stone Canyon is, any thoughts?
Saw this in the Central Links newsletter this morning:
Insert “what’d they shoot on the back nine?” joke here.
This is… suspicious, right? 59?!? It may not be the kid that had two double eagles and a hole-in-one, or whatever that was, but how many non-tour golfers have the ability to go this low? Wondering if this should have included an asterisk for a raised cup, but even then…
I saw that too, 59 at 60 years old is insane. Course looks short, but unless there were raised cups that is legit AF.
Our course record was 63 for many years (and I once foolishly thought I might be able to scratch that… I did not) until a former tour guy moved to the neighborhood and promptly shot 59. Woof. Pretty sure he shot 60 on the other course as well…
Friends and I are playing Teetering Rocks this weekend just for fun. Its short, gimmicky, and not always that well taken care of, but its also cheap and the have carts for use.
Stone Canyon is a great place to play. Usually in good shape. Other public courses in the area that are really good include:
Swope – it’s in REALLY good shape right now.
Sycamore Ridge – I think it’s got the best bunkers in the city and is usually in great condition.
I’m sure others have thoughts too, but those are my initial knee-jerk reactions.
I think it’s pretty tough to call since the metro is so spread out… depends on where you are coming from.
Off the top of my head I’d say:
Eastside (Independence, Blue Springs, N Lee’s Summit, Raytown): Stone Canyon is a big boi ballpark. WinterStone is a fun track as well
North: Shoal Creek
OP/Lenexa: IronHorse
West (Basehor/Bonner/Leavenworth): Falcon Lakes
SE (Grandview/ Lee’s Summit): Unknown, maybe Fred Arbanas?
I just haven’t enjoyed my rounds at Falcon Lakes, personally I’d put Dubs above it.
I think that’s a very fair opinion. I just like the greens at Falcon better and sometimes it gets a little frustrating punching out of the trees all day at dubs
Don’t hit it in the trees then, Dan! haha
You could probably include an Olathe/SW option and add Sycamore Ridge. Otherwise, I agree with all of this.
Mark Elliot is a stick. I’ve known him for a while and have played with him a few times. Really good guy who can go low. Don’t think I’ve ever seen him miss a fairway or green.
Creekmore in the SE, hands down.
And I would say it would give all the others a run for there money on this list.
I have never played there actually, but heard many good things. Need to try to get out there, but 45 minute drive is tough
@BigJones I was unaware there was any public play at Creekmoor? Is it pretty easy to get out there? I love that place, another big ballpark
Sycamore is 45 mins from everywhere it seems. Down here in Brookside, it is still a major hike. Do enjoy it though.
we are simi private. It would be impossible to get a time in the morning on the weekends, however late afternoon is usually open. They also run a one time only 3 month membership, it’s a good deal.
That’s great to hear! Going to stay in my little Platte County bubble for awhile longer but hopefully later this summer I’ll be able to get down there for a round.
Chris Thompson played golf at KU 20 years or so ago, grinded on the Nationwide tour for a long time, earned his PGA card last season but wasn’t able to play well enough to keep it. I know he has shot 60/61 at LCC in Lawrence so his is legit.
Let me know, I will hit it around with you.
I stand corrected! With your and @Christian’s info, sounds like we have two legit 59s recently. Pretty wild!
I wouldn’t put it past Mark Elliot to shoot 59. He would clean the clocks of high school and college golfers in the Topeka city events.
