Roll Call: Iowa

R.I.P. to the tree in the middle of the 12th fairway at Honey Creek Golf Club.

Very aware of that course and have heard great things. One negative thing I heard was pace of play. Even in a very small town it gets backed up quick.

I’d say it’s hit or miss. I grew up there, and have played 18 holes in 2.5 hours walking, then followed it up with like 5-6 hour rounds when I got stuck behind a group to proud to let someone through. The former superintendent (RIP Matt) was a disciple of Andy Johnson and the new guy is too. I’m still a bit lukewarm on their top tracer driving range, Prairie Fire, but that’s mostly because I’m cheap and don’t want to pay $40 to bang balls.

I saw news of that today. That course has my number but I still love playing it.

It has mine too. I’ll either start hot and self destruct down the stretch, or my round is over by hole 3. No in between.

I feel that. The next time I play it, I am tempted to hit 6 iron of the tee on 12-16.

I used to coach high school golf and we played a dual there against Johnston. Our players had not seen it before and I was trying to explain some management. I about had 3 kids walk off after hitting driver on the par 5 fifth and losing their ball. I tried to tell them.

Ha ha. Yeah, it makes no sense to hit driver on #5 (unless you have laser accuracy)…but I have still done it.

Gary Player is pouring one out for all the fallen trees Wednesday.

But the real question is how many one handed push ups did he do afterwards?

Me and @RunItOut were playing golf a couple weeks ago at Palmer Hills in Bettendorf and thought it would be a fun place to get some people together. Kinda penciling the weekend after Easter, April 23rd or even April 30th. This is a VERY casual thing, not going to make this an official event by any means but just a get together. Just wanting to put a bug in everyone’s ear and like I said on an earlier post, really want to make this a monthly thing if possible. I picked Palmer Hills because it’s my home course but because it has unique qualities that the other courses in the area lack. It also has a new 18-Hole Putting Course which is lots of fun before or after the round. Would like to see all of you there and I can have more details as we get closer to April. Message me if you have any questions!

To the server at Iowa Taproom that shouted-out my NLU rope hat - you’re the real MVP.

Hey guis, decided I’d pull the trigger on having some samples made from logos I’ve been workshopping.

As I stated in a previous post, I’d like to set this up as a self sustaining charity / creative outlet that can have regularly available items, and then offer limited run merch focused on the events, so working through 501c / private foundation designations application process, etc, but I’m growing concerned as to the scummy optics on how this could be viewed in connection to NLU.
Feel free to speak your mind on this. If it’s overwhelmingly against, I can kill the site (no where near ready to launch anyway) and just offer up the option to place individual orders at cost. Then have the option to run bulk orders around events if everyone agrees. I’m constantly playing with designs, got quite a few sitting in the queue, will share once I’m happy with final versions.

Anyway, pretty jazzed on how this one turned out, simple little script logo, embroidery on this one is solid, and if you’re into the heritage of brands, you’ll know why I went with Reverse Weave Champion blanks, have always appreciated the way they age and wear in. This one will have a deep berry color option that will drive the Cy fans absolutely wild. As an IC resident and UIowa alumnus, the black was unavailable at the time I ordered the samples, otherwise you know what would have been showing up on my doorstep… so navy it is, a more than acceptable option IMHO.

Up next:
Figured I’d test the detail level on the original logo most people seemed to like the most on a crewneck.
Bird is good up close though the really small detail (beak, eyes) get basically deleted as I could only use 4 colors on this one. Nest logo on pin flag is absolutely indistinguishable. Border thread is really thin, a single thread segmented around the flag and green, but still quite visible. may see if I can play with the thickness of the border in the file and get a heavier line weight. Also plan to move the logo over to the left side of the chest, feel like the center location is awkward in person, or maybe just me. Also available in black.

If say you were going to play 36 holes in Des Moines over two days, where would you go?

Public—Waveland, Jester Park or Legacy. If you want to drive 40 min north, Honey Creek and Veenker are quirky fun.

I belong to Echo Valley CC and could always host depending on when. 9 of our holes are shut down for reno but 18 are still in use once spring comes.

waveland website is…not great but from what I can tell it looks pretty good.

I’d throw Otter Creek out there as well. Between Waveland, Legacy, and Otter Creek you can’t go wrong.

Otter Creek/TCI I think you meant.

Don’t tell anyone but my love for TCI is waning, not a fan of switching the 9’s and all the housing development sucks. It was so much better 5 years ago.

Also I’d like another shot at Otter Creek, the day I saw you down there the wind was a little aggressive.
