You sir are a magician.
The way I understand it, you can still be a part of, and play in events in as many different Roosts you want… but you have to select one of the 20 or so official roosts for tournament purposes.
In a way, we are lucky with being so centrally located to a number of areas with large NLU followings.
Also, these logos are sick!
Just pulled it off their site and used a website called Vectr to edit. All of these logos look fantastic. Great work!
I’m going to jump the gun a little bit and decide to start planning some events for 2022. I want to set something up maybe once a month if possible, that we can get together as a group and play some golf. If people want it to be serious we can keep score and do all that stuff but I’m just trying to get together. Meeting @ThatGolfPunk last year down in Peoria was fantastic and playing a couple rounds with @RunItOut this year were big highlights of 2021 for me. I want to try and showcase some fun, interesting courses that our great state can offer. I just wanted to put the word out and keep checking out this space for updates. I want some feedback on where you guis would like to go and if there’s somewhere worth checking out.
Saukie?
in Moline?
Yeah - course I grew up on. Haven’t played it in a decade or more, but can’t imagine it holds up today.
Believe it or not, it’s not bad. My co-worker plays it weekly and loves it. I like the different kind of par 3’s it offers. Can’t beat the price, either. $26 w/cart or $16 to walk
It is not close to me at all but SpringValley in Livermoor (northwest IA) falls into an interesting course the state offers. I also think Finkbine is a must.
This is a great idea. Would love to try and get some regular meet ups spread around the state.
We are still working on planning a bigger meet up for the Strapped return to Iowa. Hoping to get details locked down on this once NLU posts more info on 2022 refuge events in the near future.
Yeah I am very excited about this coming August, I’ve already told my wife about it. I am LOCKED IN
Played Saukie a month or 2 ago and for what it is, its damn fun. A few requisite Muni templates (the Dead Flat Straights, the Ravine Par 3). Would be a great place to do an unusual format outing or something.
With regards to the events / merch:
In my former life I helped run operations at a skate / streetwear / sneaker shop, so when I started on the logos my brain immediately jumped to an online shop concept and I’ve been fiddling with that too. Creative outlet for me has been immensely missed, as well as the community work that we did with the stores.
Figured with The Mandatory Golf Friday folks in QC area, the Strapped Iowa: The Butter Cow Cup, Goldfinch Golf Club (or if something else is decided), and future events, the shop would essentially pay for itself, help to fund the events, and generate revenue to donate to charity as the merch would be on-demand drop ship at first until we can get to a point of pre-orders and more having more quality control. I can run through rough budgetary models if anyone actually cares. Merch will be somewhat of a risk in terms of quality just due to the nature of using drop ship models, but I have used this company previously and have always been happy with the results. Plus it cuts out risk of sell through rates and requiring the start-up capital of pre-purchasing. Lot of opportunity to use this to continue growing all aspects of the game / community.
I want to be clear as to my intentions with this. This is not to generate profit to myself. Everything would be put back into the community, be it through events or just straight up putting the money into the hands of whatever charities we decide. If I wanted to start a brand, it wouldn’t be off the back of a community built by someone else. I plan to fund the admin costs myself for as long as it takes to break even on that side of things.
Sadly, I don’t believe it will be taking place during Senior Citizens Day at the fair, so you won’t have the opportunity to hit up the Consumer Wireless & Reverse mortgage booths with your peers.
Don’t worry I’ll be lined up in the “Butterscotch and Assorted Hard Candies” booth
Signed up for the goldfinch club. Great idea guys hopefully leads to meeting up with you and seeing some new courses. Until then it’s gonna be great weather here in the QC this weekend if anyone wants to join me and my son at country view just off I 80 after you get into Illinois. $10 to walk 9 $5 for second 9. Prob be out there around 11-12
All right Iowa guis: What do you think will be open in the DSM area this next week? I saw Legacy is open, but it doesn’t look they have any times left that will allow for 18 holes.
A projected high in the 70s on Wednesday has this MN guy thinking about rolling down 35.
Jester Park is always open
Just to close this loop on the Roost stuff; the KC based Great Plains Golf Club has made the cut. I don’t want to spam your roll call thread, so if you have any questions please DM me or post in the thread below.

I know Iowa has an interest in starting your own. But if you don’t have the numbers in year 1, and still want a pathway to compete on the regional and national stage I think I’ve created a points system giving Iowans that opportunity. You can play locally, and in whatever events fit your schedule in Iowa, KC, Minneapolis, Omaha, Chicago or wherever works for you.
I hope this structure both encourages Iowans to join our Roost, affords you the flexibility to grow independently in pursuit of establishing your own local club, and “leave the nest” if you will.
With all this Roost talk and mention of great courses to play in our state, I wanted to suggest a course to our Eastern Iowa guis. It’s not in Iowa, but for those of you out east, a short trip to Byron, IL offers a FANTASTIC muni. For a town of 3,000 that isn’t exactly golf crazed, Prairie View is one of the best public courses I have ever played and it is pretty affordable. Really, if you’re ever passing by the area on your way to Chicago, Milwaukee, or Madison, you can’t go wrong stopping there.
