Roll Call: Iowa

That actually works even better for me. Would rather play 9 than not play at all.

Amen. I’ll try to scoot out of here as quickly as possible, could possibly get down that way even earlier.

ETA is about 4:45 presently. Should I change it to 5 or keep it as-is?

Hell ya!

I think I can make 5. gonna be snug. I shall pray to Odin that I-80 is clear and my hand is steady upon the wheel. I will do what I must to #getinvolved.

Fyre Lake sucks.

We’ve been begging for, and supporting this place for too long to be what it should be - a really great course.

The routing on the front 9 is enough to give the wokest GCA nerd a wet dream. The back 9 has a bit too many quirks in it but overall, it’s a fun place. Or, it could be… should be a fun place.

Fuck that. The greens are constantly ridden with disease. Crabgrass in fairways and green surrounds. Bunkers completely blown out. If you’re 2 yards off the fairway, you’re in 4’ tall fescue. Drop. Be better at golf, hack.

Maintenance has always been a disaster out there. I always feel like I’m inconveniencing the staff (1, maaaybe 2 people) anytime I’m there to play their world class Jack Nicklaus championship designed course.

The clubhouse is a double wide. I mean, cool. It works if the place was a mind blowing golf facility but the new owner/manager comes off as pretentious and arrogant.

I hold out hope he turns it around but history repeats itself and the local community knows what Fyre Lake is. And what it isn’t.

If you can get on for under $40, sure. Go play. But bring a dozen Mojos. Leave the ProVs in the car.

That is one thing I noticed is you could almost always find a way to get on for under $40, sometimes even $30 out there and this year with new owners, unless it was a 4 or 5 oclock tee time it was always like $65.

and to the point about losing balls I know my dad and uncles, 3 hacks and one good player said they wouldnt go back because they lost so many balls

It’s a great place to go if you wanna empty the shag bag.

@jimithng23 if you play better, you wouldn’t lose so many balls :joy:

Lol joking aside. Definitely agree the course has a lot of potential to be a solid track. Played their for the first time this year and the amount crabgrass and dead spots on green were astonishing to me given how it seemed like most courses had ideal weather this year.

I don’t think I would head back until improvements are made.

Last time I played there, July this year I think, I put a ball in the water on 8 and that was it.

The other two guys in my group went through a dozen each, if not more.

Searching for a ball every other hole in waist deep fescue does not a fun day on the golf course make.

It’s embarrassing when you can play in the cities for half the price and the conditions are better, most of the time. Highland Springs is a really fun course and doesn’t have nearly the problems that Fyre Lake does. It’s just disheartening to see a great layout ruined by ownership.

You go farther down the highway to Cambridge at Valley View CC and they find a way to put together an interesting layout with good conditions all while being in the middle of nowhere. I can’t believe I got myself into a bad mood talking about this stupid course.

Yep. I grew up 5 minutes from there. Mom and my brother are members. I used to play it when the now front 9 were the only 9 holes.

Lot of scar tissue out there as that’s when I first picked up a golf club. Slicing it all over the planet.

Really good farmer-built golf course though if you’re in the area.

Anyone here read the Roost outline / listen to the pod yet? Any thoughts?

I think Iowa is going to get blacked out of this harder than MLB games. With only 20 Roosts there is no way that we make the cut. Well have to join the Minneapolis, Chicago, St Louis, or Kansas City threads.
