Roll Call: Iowa

I would say absolutely

It’s me and @RunItOut and any other two great guis at 11:36 at Fyre Lake. It’s going to be a good time!

Brown Deer is SNEAKY good fun. Definitely the tale of 2 nines, but a lot of really thought provoking holes and loads of risk/reward options.

Fav Par 4: 18 (awesome closing hole, just gotta cut down those trees guarding the green)

Fav Par 5: 10 should be a long 4 instead of a 5, but dammit if that approach shot isn’t the best shot you’ll hit all day

Favr Par 3: 5. Great vista in the distance, and fall colors framing the backdrop makes it a really fun hole. Honorable mention for 14. LOVE me a flip wedge Par 3.

I definitely will come back to play in season next year. Here are a few photos from today’s round:

I enjoyed Fyre Lake the layout when I was there. What I didn’t like was all the crabgrass on every hole. (Especially on 1 and 2 in the rough) On almost every green there were dead spots. And not small ones. I took pictures because I couldn’t believe it. The owner was nice but put down his head superintendent. The beers were cold but were overpriced. And lastly, the sign on the golf cart was priceless. I work in hospitality, and I wont go back because of the sign. There are so many different ways to convey that you want golfers to fix their ballparks. This would and should be last resort.

The sign made me laugh but I get what youre saying. Seems to be anger behind those typed damn and butts.

Yeah there was some frustration. A course designed by Jack I would want it 100% a majority of the time. Fairways and tees were fine but the greens were awful. The sign had me scratching my head

Based on my discussions with the pro, the greens are top priority for next year. They looked like shit but I thought they honestly rolled okay.

Don’t even get me started on the $24 6-pack of Busch Lights….

I can’t believe they looked that bad. I didn’t get there this year but it usually is in really good shape. I know new ownership is making changes so who knows what is going on behind the scenes

me and @RunItOut played Fyre Lake this past Saturday and I can concur with @Jonathanm4 that some of the greens are not in great shape. As for the “Repair your divots” sign they did change those up! Since they did not expect this sudden warm weather after deciding to close the 31st, they did mow down all of the long native. As a QC native I can speak to Fyre Lake’s backstory a little bit, but the course is unlike anything we have in the area. They’ve always had problems since opening in the middle of a recession, being 25 minutes outside of the QC, and previous bad ownership. But the bones are there to be an exciting challenge for people in the area. I am skeptical of the current owner as well, and I just hope he can make good decisions to make this course play to its potential .

Whole heartedly agree with this, @grandpa_jones .
The land movement, green placement and contours, all great or potentially great and rare for our neck of the woods.
Some of the routing choices are a bit suspect, the drive ( and I do mean drive, because this would be a tough walk) between 16 and 17 is about 37 miles give or take. Solid infrastructure features along the way though.
Conditioning is clearly their biggest issue. And will absolutely be back next year when the all the native has grown back out to see how the course should really look.
Round was excellent, won the playoff on 18 as we went in AS and had to loop back for a replay as there is some really good risk/reward on that hole. Constant back and forth with Andy crushing the short game.
All in all a solid end to the year. (Well, maybe…)

Hello friends. I’m heading down to IC later today and was hoping to hit a simulator or some such thing tonight. Any recommendations and/or guis that want to get a few swings in tonight?

I’m not to familiar with sims but the only I know of is in North Liberty. It’s called Leaderboard and has food, bar and golf sims.

The only sim I know of in IC is the Top Golf swing suite at the Graduate Hotel. Otherwise Leaderboard is a good option. A little North of there in Fairfax there is four seasons indoor golf that you can rent out if Leaderboard is booked up. I would love to play depending on what time you are thinking.

I did see the Top Golf thing and Leaderboard. Ideally I think I’d like to check into my hotel first (downtown IC), but I am coming from MSP so I’ll likely be passing right through North Liberty. Trying to leave here between 1 and 2 so I’d probably be looking around dinnertime, 6 or 7ish. Could always do later if that works better.

I’d be in if something comes together.

The earlier the better for me.

I can book a few hours at Leaderboard starting at 6, if that works?

That works for me.

So they have league starting at 7 on all bays tonight. Not ideal but I booked 5:30-7 which means the 3 of us could get in 9 but likely no more. What do y’all think?
