Had fun out there @TheHackinLumberjack ! @Drewski great call on the course. So much fun! Some definite thinker holes and land movement. Yeesh.
Might be a weird question, but anyone know if Derrell Witt is still alive? I grew up playing Sellinger’s Classic 3 which then was sold to Matt Swanson and is now an abomination of a shitty driving range with shitty food. I’ve been trying to find photos of the old Par 3 layout but I can’t find anything at all. I know Witt was the architect but the only way I found to contact him was on LinkedIn so I sent him a message asking if he still had anything showing the layout but I honestly don’t know if he’s even still alive at this point. Funnily enough, he also did the Tomball Country Club remodel so I grew up learning to play on one of his courses and now play regularly as an adult on another one.
Anyway, that’s my Friday. Hope everyone is enjoying theirs too!
Edit: Well he just responded to my LinkedIn message so he’s alive but unfortunately also doesn’t have any plans or photos. Oh well.
Quick condition update on Timber Creek. Played it Wednesday for the first time in probably 2 years (is this the place where I tell you that I was playing great for 15 holes, only to finish quad/double/double? I didn’t think so).
Very happy to report that the course (we played Pines/Trails) was in very good shape. There were just a couple of small spots on a couple of greens that still needed work. Overall, I’d give it a solid 7/10 on conditioning. Worth playing again, after an extended time on my “no-fly” list.
I played it last week as well and was happy with the conditioning.
Snagged a 4-some at 11:10 tomorrow at Gus. Might be a little chilly to start, but it will get close to 60F with no wind.
Anyone want to join before I throw some back?
Got one spot open at Gus tomorrow at 11 am. Let me know if you want to play. First to respond is in.
How’s it going, Houstonians? Or should I say STROHs?
I grew up in Houston, but have been living in DC for the last 10 years. The draw of family in Houston has finally won us over, and we’re moving back in March. Expecting we’ll be living inside (or nearly inside) the loop, but we’ll see how it shakes out.
Still figuring out a lot of things logistically, but I’m very much looking forward to getting out to play with y’all soon, and having more favorable year-round golf weather. I think I should also probably switch my Roost allegiance and join y’all if you’ll have me - I just added myself to the roster google sheet but not sure of the actual process for someone who’s currently on another roost’s roster. Maybe this is @Jdonelson territory?
My refuge handle is gonna be kinda non sensical soon…oh well!
Do y’all have a WhatsApp going? If so, would love an invite!
Welcome! You’re in! I’ll add you to the Roost Group here on the refuge so you can see the Strohs board - I try and have a thread up for each open event as we run it. We’re fairly loosely organized for this first year, just making sure that South Texas has representation at the national Roost tournament. There is a whatsapp, the link will be on one of the Strohs threads shortly (@RMcCall manages that for us).
Welcome! If you want to play Memorial Park for $38, get a city of Houston address. Or maybe don’t decide where to move because of that, just consider it a perk!
I’d be lying if I said that thought hadn’t crossed my mind. Appreciate the reminder. My FIL lives in Bellaire and still hasn’t played Memorial since the renovation because of it.
Sounds like you are looking at Heights adjacent and Oak Forest/Garden Oaks area? Prime distance to Memorial (not as hard to walk on as it sounds) and Gus is just a little ways down.
Anybody heard much about the East River 9 they’re supposed to be completing by this summer over in EaDo? Should be a great place to get a post work par 3 round in. Anybody know much about the design or the amount of foot traffic they’re expecting?
I only know what they’ve put out on their site (80-150 yard holes, 2 distinct tee boxes to make 18 holes, massive putting green, grass range, etc.). Quick Google Earth views don’t show too much action at the construction site.
I totally missed this. It would be awesome if it is as good as advertised. Kind of a risky spot by the bayou…
I have a buddy who’s company is bidding on a project to fix the retaining wall by the bayou over there…hope they get it right. Seems like a rushed construction site to me if they’re expecting the project to be done this summer and they’re still accepting bids on a key piece of the project.
The project was originally slated for a Spring 2022 completion.
I would be surprised if they completed the project by this Summer.
I’ve got meetings but the 12:20 at memorial is completely open tomorrow is someone wants to grab it
I’m anticipating such a massive cluster fuck once it’s open.
I’d imagine if executed right this and another (especially lit) short course could kill it in some of the more course deprived areas…
Don’t you mean the EAST RIVER!?
Ain’t nobody fooled by them calling it East River, that’s a dirty ass bayou.
Also @RZinDC move to Tomball, it’s the best
Played Sterling CC today. Fun course and greens were quick. Was my first round in my Nest hoodie, first round in any hoodie for that matter, and shot 77 with 14 pars. May keep that going.
