Tomball is gonna be a tough sell for a couple that both grew up inside the loop, but I’m open to hearing your pitch. So lay it on me, what makes Tomball the best?
I mean it really just depends on what you’re looking for. I don’t know when the last time you’ve been back was but “Tomball” isn’t the rural, mostly farmland area it was 10-15 years ago. The city has essentially expanded out here so even though my house is in Tomball, it’s really just off of Spring Cypress and 249, not even close to the Tomball city center that people think of.
But my home is 2800 sqft on a 1/3 acre lot with a pool & hot tub, a huge backyard, zoned to Tomball Memorial which is one of the best schools in the Houston Metroplex, and it cost me half of what my brother just paid for a house that’s half the size, on a smaller lot, and zoned to a terrible school because they wanted to be just outside the loop in Garden Oaks.
We’re members at Tomball Country Club which costs us $250/month for a family membership so my wife and I play golf with one of my friends every Sunday morning and if we really wanted to go somewhere inside the loop, we’re about 25 minutes outside the Heights.
Well presented case, and I’d say those TCC dues are probably your most tempting sales point!!
We’re in a funny place moving where my wife and I are both working remotely so commutes are less of a factor, but at the end of the day, we’re largely focused on getting closer to family. The Heights is already 15-30 minutes from our families. Add another 25+ minutes and it gets to where we lose a good bit of the reason why we’re making the move in the first place. It’s funny you mention Garden Oaks, as we’ve considered it and pretty much already ruled it out as being “too far away,” lol.
The lower cost of living is also tempting, but coming from DC where we’re already used to similar and probably realistically higher cost of living, we’re able to not focus on that aspect too much and prioritize proximity to family and being where we really want to be.
Regardless, look forward to meeting up to play sooner than later!
RIP Gus for being the greatest value in golf
And just like that, never more pronounced has been our need for the First Amendment’s protection of our rights to peaceably assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances.
Gotta recoup the money used to repave the road and parking lot!
tell me you’re a lawyer without telling me you’re a lawyer.
I saw that and thought oh no, then saw it was $41 to walk and $55 to ride… So still the best value that isn’t Memorial.
Memorial is only a value if you happen to live inside the city limits. A suburb that’s only 20 minutes away? $120.
Sounds like you need to make friends who can book tee times for you.
I kind of get that and my understanding is it has to do with tax contributing citizens, but I do think $120-150 range is steep, especially on the weekday. I think the traffic it was generating was also a factor. $75-115 range seems closer considering its a PGA tour course now in great shape all year. I know Moody Gardens has a tier for citizens, and county residents and then non residents. Brackenridge is $80 no matter where you live. Is the value of Memorial Park the same as Blackhorse, GCOH, or Wildcat whose green fees all can touch the same rate but IMO aren’t really that fun.
A little ashamed to say that I’ve been in Houston since 2007 and think I’ve played GW like twice
Depends on the suburb, luckily Kingwood is part of Houston so I get the discount even up in the great north
Have an opening on Saturday for Cypresswood GC (Tradition) 7:32am if anyone is interested? 3 of us are doing our match play
My dad is starting to play golf more again, and now that my sister has officially gotten/started her first job was thinking of joining The Woodlands CC. First, there’s a waitlist so he couldn’t join right now if he wanted to but second, the initiation fee for having access to the Player and Tournament course is $50k!!! That is absolutely insane. I am fortunate the Tournament course let’s me come practice there, and it’s a nice golf course in terms of course conditions and whatnot, but 50k is outrageous.
Initiation fees are more than a little ridiculous all across the country. Barton Creek in Austin is >$130k (and also not taking new members right now). Even Lost Creek in Austin is $30k (non-refundable, non-equity!).
That’s absolutely insane. Literally, one year ago the initiation fee was $25k for access to ALL courses.
Tomball CC is only $500, we might be a slight step down in quality but we make up for it with laid back vibes and the rare chance of spotting Daric Ashy in the wild
Alright. You’ve convinced me. I’ll let you know when I schedule my courtesy round.
