Really sorry to hear about your bad experiences at AP. I know there are going to be jerks everywhere, but IMO the overall vibe there has been much more positive since Jon Montag came over as Director of Golf from Gleannloch a few years ago. Communication has improved, as have course conditions. I’m just there for the golf – not the social scene – so can’t speak for that element of the membership. But it does seem to be a friendlier, more welcoming place today than it was when I initially joined in 2016.
I tried to go there and hit balls during the start of quarantine and they wouldn’t let me because I wasn’t a member, and I’d pay for balls and still wouldn’t. I told them I played on the LPGA and it didn’t matter. It was mainly because my sister was with me and I try not to go to Woodlands CC when it’s not just me.
Ugh. I’m sorry. That’s brutal. I wouldn’t give them my business either after that. Doesn’t make up for it I know, but would be happy to cover the costs if you’d like to return for a round sometime.
It’s all good. In college, Massingale let me hit in front of his academy as long as both bays weren’t being used. But now that I go to Woodlands I just hadn’t kept up with it.
Been a quick minute since posting in here, but shoutout the the guy who spotted my NLU towel while on the range at Houston National a week or so back. My 6 y/o son does the Operation 36 program there. We chatted for a quick minute, but didn’t’ catch a name
Looking for a little club fitting advice. My brother lives in Houston (Montrose/Upper Kirby) and has struggled to find a club fitter he likes. A few attempts at indoor fittings haven’t panned out well for him. I suspect he’s like me and swings with wild abandon in the cage as opposed to being a passive little poofer when the errant shots have consequences.
Anyone know of a gui that does outdoor fitting that I can suggest for him?
It’s a bit of a drive for him, but Matt Swanson does a good job outdoor club fitting out near Spring. I went to him back when he ran the school of golf at Wildcat and he was very easy to work with.
I’ve done my fittings at Club Champion in the Woodlands with Miles. He was great. A bunch of guys I know have worked with him. Doesn’t solve the outdoor part though
Note that their driving range fucking sucks. It’s all mats, very skinny, there’s nets that hang down from the top that stop anything higher than a stinger, and you get in trouble if you happen to hit a ball over the net on either the right side or the back.
Hows everyone doing. Im actually moving down to Houston on the 6th and just popping in here to get a feel for the golf scene and to find some peeps to start playing with. My wifes from their originally but its all new for me so kind of a fish outta watta thing going on here.
What area are you moving to? I think we have people all over.
We got a spot in Willow Brook area. Ive been on the research train looking at some potential courses to get me and the wife a membership on but its so hard to figure out online alone haha. I arrive the 8th and will be taking that week to play a few courses just to get the feel
I know @2BB is at Sterling CC which shouldn’t be too far from there. Affordable if I remember correctly
You are welcome to contact me regarding Sterling CC (290 and Barker Cypress). Compared to some alternatives in the area, Sterling is pretty affordable. Let me know if you want to play there and I can help set up something with the membership staff.
I need to hit you up about that as well, I’m at Spring Cypress and North Eldridge so we’re not far.
I appreciate that and would love the chance to have a look around. Im only a 13 handicap trending down and my wifes new to the game so were not looking for extremely challenging but we also dont want to invest in a membership that robs us of the experience either. I hope that makes sense.
Curious what you guys think of Windrose Golf Club? Or Gleannlock Pines?
Windrose is fucking slammed all day every day. I’ve never played a round there that took less than 5 hours.
Gleannloch we just talked about a few posts up. It’s long and wide, but a little expensive for what it is. And it’s public.
Ah ok i did read the pace of play at windrose was atrocious. So it seems that it is worth going all in on the CC courses then. So now i just have to figure out one that is affordable for us i suppose.
Any time. Just give me a week’s notice so I can snag a decent tee time
New to the Refuge! Not new to NLU. Look forward to some good conversations in this board
