Roll Call: Houston

@ShankeditSteve are you in here yet??

Has anyone here played Longwood recently? We’re going to close on a house in about a month that’s right around the corner. I may be interested in getting a membership if the course and practice area are worth it.

The course is decent and has a fun layout but last time I was out there the greens were in real rough shape. I also heard they were closing one of their nines and it already takes forever to play out there.

Good to know, I’ll check it out when we move in but I haven’t ever heard anything good about it which I assume I would have if it was worth anything.

I was under the impression that the course was closing - can not confirm. But it, like Houston in general, does flood a lot. So the greens can get poor frequently, but when they’re good they’re good.

Yes

(this is a sentence.)

Tomball Country Club is also going to be pretty close and is private. Seems like they have a good rate too for a private club. My only concern there is that I’ve heard it’s mostly old men and they’re crotchety.

New to the refuge but have been keeping up with the NLU crew on youtube for a while. I’m on the north side in Kingwood and am a member there. Just wanted to introduce myself and hopefully get in on some group outings if any are ever set up for some refuge meetups.

This is a proper assessment (for Tomball CC) as of a couple years ago. Used to have a neighbor who was a member there… got in on one of those “Young Professional” deals that old man clubs do to feel hip. It’s fine, nothing to write home about.

Now Woodforest on the other hand, I’m on record in a few other posts saying this is the best kept secret in the Houston area. Hate that it went private… course is so much fun.

Yeah my buddy is a member at Woodforest but at the moment it’s a little out of my price range. Maybe that’ll change next year, we’ll see.

Wanted to drop in and introduce myself. Moved back to Houston from London recently. If anyone is ever looking for a game always down.

I’m coming down to Houston for work on November 15 and coming down a half day early so I can play golf. I’m flying into George Bush and am thinking about playing the Golf Club of Houston because it is so close. Website says it would be $79 starting at noon, which seems like a good deal. Down side is that it is the last round of The Masters.

I’m from Edmond, Oklahoma, but thought I would put this out there since this is kind of what the Refuge is supposed to be about.

That is a good deal, but I would try to get a Tee time at Memorial Park because it will be in prime shape from the Houston Open. Also a course where everyone is friendly and used to getting paired up with random people.

Thanks. I thought about that and I may still do that, but I am coming down and staying in the Kingwood area so not sure if I was going to want to drive all the way into Houston that far, but I just mapped it and it’s only about 30 minutes from IAH to Memorial Park so not too bad at all.

I’m coming down for the HAPL golf tournament so I can play with some clients. This is not a rough business trip.

Last week I was fortunate enough to volunteer at the Houston Open as a Hole Marshal. I was a Spotter on Hole #5 fairway hunting for tee shots in the brutally thick rough. It was pretty freaking cool to be honest. I got a dad hat, nice shirt and a sweet ass 1/4 zip pullover for keeps. However, there were no free tickets or green fees like in years past which was a bummer. Nonetheless, it was awesome and I’m looking forward to doing it again next year.

The course in general was immaculate. Greens were firm, fast and challenging. PGA allowed limited spectators this week and while having conversations with them, a lot of people did not even recognize the course. If the players saw the rough or missed a green pin side they paid for it.

I’ve included some photos and details below.

Hole #5
Par 4
440 Yards

View from tee box. The shot here is a baby draw over the right leaning pine tree. Anything right of that is in the rough.

View from right side fairway/rough to tee box.

View from right rough to green. Most players tee shots ended up here.

Fairway bunker. Some approach shots from the thick rough saw the bunker.

Back of #5 green.

Rough was no joke. Only a few made GIR from the rough.

Buried ball left of flag.

Closer view of the same ball… See it?

Phil’s tee shot went far left into the pine straw on Friday.

Course Map.

Best for last… #2 Par 3… Pretty.

Anyone interested in playing Saturday morning? My regular crew is out so I’m looking for a game. Open to playing anywhere around town.

New to the Nest. Live out in Fulshear. Always looking for a game. No membership yet, but have been considering Weston Lakes. Any members here?

What time does the Memorial Park website update in the morning for weekend tee times? Trying to make sure I lock one in for the day after thanksgiving.
