Roll Call - GB & IRE

I’m sure this has been answered many times in here, but I’ll be in London near the tail end of my honeymoon next year and will have the opportunity to play only one round. Where should it be? Sunningdale? Birkdale? St. George’s? I’ll be renting clubs too, if that impacts the decision at all.

One round and one round only? Sunningdale if you can secure a tee time. There are a dozen great heathland courses within 30 minutes of London, Sunningdale Old is the cream of the crop but The Berkshire, St George’s Hill, Swinley, Walton Heath etc… are all great options as well.

Reach out on here nearer the time, there are tonnes of Nest members playing around London.

Birkdale is 200 miles away. Royal St George’s is the best links course near London and accessible by train from London… takes about 90 minutes to get there.

Guess I should’ve looked at a map before I posted.:man_facepalming:t2: The article I was reading made it seem like Birkdale was London area, but now I see it’s up by Liverpool.

Yeah, I think I might only be able to sneak one in. Sunningdale looks incredible, so I might try to see if I can get a time there. I checked out Walton Heath, too. Any great gems that kind of fly under the radar?

I’m a bit biased but the 3 W’s are a lovely day out… Woking, Worplesdon and West Hill. All are on the same piece of heathland about 30 mins out of London in Surrey.

New Zealand is another one which flies low. Proper old school club which is just going through a renovation and is starting to look superb.

All date from the early 1900’s and have their own charm.

If you want to go up a level then Swinley is a unique place. Until 10 years ago was very very exclusive but they’ve started opening their doors. It has an amazing history and the members there are very eccentric. Up until the 1990’s there were no tee markers, yardages or pars. Members only played match play and the golf was secondary to lunch and Claret. Probably the best set of par 3’s in the country.

What time of the year are you over?

West Sussex aka Pulborough. New Zealand is also low key fantastic.

But if it’s one round only, it has to be Sunningdale Old, St George’s Hill (red and blue) or Swinley Forest.

I’m not there until next September, so I’m looking really far in advance, but I just sent an email to Sunningdale yesterday. I’ll see if I can get something secured.

It’s the perfect time of year to play golf in London. The other option if you’re able to squeeze in another round, per @troublelove above, is to head to the links at Deal and Sandwich (about 1.5hrs by train) to play either Royal Cinque Ports or Royal St George’s.

Check when they do maintenance… it is usually some time in August.

Shout out nearer the time, if I am around and you can’t access Sunny D you are welcome to come down to West Hill

Hello all, hoping to be pointed in the right direction(s)…

Coming over from the states with wife and father for The Open in July, and scratching out plans currently. Likely in/out of some combo of Aberdeen and/or Edinburgh for flights. Plan is to stay in one or the other and commute in for our days with tickets for the championship.

I’ve got 3-4 days on both sides of our tickets to play golf. Already have Cruden Bay booked. Where else should I look to play anywhere between aberdeen and Edinburgh? Anything off the beaten path I shouldn’t miss?

If anyone has non golf tips too, DM’s are open. First time coming to Scotland, and open to all info and help! Thanks in advance.

Hello all, NW England based, member at Wallasey.

Been a NLU follower since the very early days, think I must have listened to every pod and watched all the videos! Particularly enjoy the Trap Draw. Finally got around to joining the Nest as a way of repaying for the vast content I have consumed (in addition to merch orders!).

Still finding my way around, have seen the dishonourable golf society - is that the best thing to join? Just after a bit of golf (and happy to host people if you fancy a links fix…) with like-minded people etc.

Cheers,

Phil

Welcome @PhilW, Wallasey is a fantastic club. Yes, there’s plenty of golf to be played with the RACDG - eg. in a couple of weeks we’re playing Royal St George’s, a group played Huntercombe today, next year we have events at Moortown, Stoneham, Allwoodley, Woodhall Spa, Hankley Common, Sunningdale, Gullane 2 and 3, Sheringham and Hunstanton.

@The_Cad_Says can add you to the network if you like.

Pretty sure CAD has been in touch already, but if not, let me know and I’ll shoot you a DM :+1:t2:

Cheers! Am being added shortly I believe.

What amazing golf that is. Just back myself from Ballybunion, which was ridiculous.

Half baked idea … PGA Tour World Cup. Teams of top 4 players from a country with PGA tour status. Season long race. Effort to pair rivalry teams with each other Thurs/Fri. It would create rivalries. If more than four players from a country on Tour (e.g. USA), the team gets reshuffled quarterly/yearly I would love to support an Island of Ireland team: Lowry, McDowell, Power, McIlroy. I think all the players (USA, Korea, RSA, etc.) would get a kick out of representing their countries each week. Would help increase interest in the tour across the world.

The thing is every time we talk about country representation in golf (like in the Olympics) you get met with “The US is a thousand times deeper than any other country so they’ll just win every time”. It’s tedious. Plus all the players really want is to make truckloads of cash for themselves. They love the RC because for a week every two years they get to enjoy team golf representing something bigger than themselves, but they like it because its a fun week long break. Outside of that its all me me me.

It’s not really off the beaten track anymore but Panmure is delightful. NE Fife has some cracking courses as well in Elie, Lundin Links and Crail. If you’re looking up in Aberdeen, Murcur is a great track. Lives in the shadow of its famous neighbour, but it’s a proper test of Links golf.

I think the top American players would get a kick out of playing for their country. In fact, it would probably be a goal for them to be on the team. Added endorsements of being a Team USA player would certainly help too. Also, the next round/iteration of 40mm pip money to be distributed - why not apply it to an idea like this.

I would love to see USA vs UK vs RSA vs Korea vs Japan rivalries develop. I think it would get players and fans more engaged.

I don’t disagree. I’d love it.

Do you see this taking part as a side hustle to the tour events every week - like you add up the scores of the players while they do their own thing - or is it a series of specific events?
