Roll Call: East Tennessee

Sounds good to me! Bummed I’m missing that event. The move knocked me out of it.

Played Island Point yesterday. That’s some beautiful scenery!! Greens were fun and I enjoyed the layout. Was a good first course to play too.

Island point is always fun to play.

Chattanooga here. Playing Brainerd Saturday morning (11/13). If anyone wants to join, HMU.

Big fan of Island Point. Glad to hear the course is still doing well.

Had pretty much all my meetings up canceled today, so, I went to Egwani Farms. Man…is all public golf in Knoxville this good? Is there even a reason to join a country club? I like a competitive round against others as much as anyone.

Missed my window due to some install going on at the house. Anyone playing tomorrow?

Sup fellas I’m heading to pigeon forge for a wedding next weekend Jan 14-15. Going to have to kill time Saturday morning so I was going to see if it was worth it to play any golf there this time of year and if so any course suggestions? Thanks

I am not sure how much snow they have gotten (we didn’t get much in Knoxville), but my guess is it’s going to be very muddy and probably a little chilly.

I am still a little new to the area though and I haven’t played much at all over that way.

Greetings. I’m in the VERY early stages of thinking about moving the family from DC to Chattanooga to be closer to my wife’s family. She grew up in Ringgold and has siblings on Signal, in Hixson, and ATL and we’ve been to the area a ton. I’ve played Brainerd, Council Fire, and Sweetens, but curious to hear thoughts on Black Creek, McLemore, Signal Mountain G&CC, and others. I don’t think Lookout or CCC are viable options, but the other privates could be as we consider potential neighborhoods/areas to look at. I’m not super competitive, but do like to get out and play (fast) once or twice a week.

Side note: the 8yo plays hockey and loves it, but the closest youth hockey team I could easily find is in Knoxville. Am I missing something?

I’m not in the area, but absolutely love Black Creek and would gladly play that course everyday.

The best option over that way is Sevierville Golf Club, either the Highlands or River course. My suggestion is Highlands as I think it’s prettier and more user friendly than the River.

As @ChuckV247 said, it’ll likely be pretty muddy, but if we get a few days of sunshine beforehand it won’t be any worse than what you’d typically get in the wintertime around here.

Anything else in the area is just ok. I enjoyed Gatlinburg Golf Course the one time I played it, but Sevierville is far, far better.

Like @ColoniusFunk said, Black Creek is excellent.

@mmckenney and @tedscott can advise on the rest of the options, as I’ve never played McLemore or Signal Mountain, nor am I familiar with anything hockey in the area.

Echoing the praise for Black Creek. Very fun course and solid membership.

Chatt is kind of a boomtown over the past 5-8 yrs, so most of the top layer (6-7) clubs should present good options.

I was a member at Signal for 4 years. It’s a fun course, built off the side of a mountain. If you live on the mountain, downtown or in Red Bank, it’s probably The closest option. They renovated the practice area a few years ago, and King Collins has been tinkering with several holes from and architectural standpoint. King Collins did a full on Master Plan, which if is ever implemented, would be unreal. The front nine is sublime, and the back is very short and quirky. Solid membership, regular games, good Pro.

I loved my time at SMGCC, but if I ever move back to Chattanooga, I’d have a hard time not joining Black Creek (assuming Honors and CGCC are off the table).

Another viable option is Council Fire. Chattanooga also had a great amateur circuit in the spring and summer when I was there. If competitive amateur golf is your thing, you could possibly not even carry a private membership and play ~8 solid events a year around the city at other clubs.

Relating to McLemore, it’s a haul from town if I remember correctly. If you live south of town or in NGA it may be an option, but if you’re in Ooltewah, Hixson or downtown, If memory serves me right it’s like 50 minutes.

Happy to expand on anything SMGCC related.

What’s the scoop on Lookout Mountain? I know they approved the course renovation, which should be great.

Does anyone know if they do a national/regional membership? I saw a dues sheet floating around that had something about a national membership but wasn’t sure how that worked. Is it the type of club you can just call up and ask or more of a “don’t ask us, we’ll ask you” policy?

I never got the impression it was that exclusive. The “don’t ask” types in town are Honors, CGCC and The Farm down in GA.

I’d check to see if their website has a membership director, or call the golf shop and ask if they do. I’m sure they’ll either field your questions or politely tell you they’re not open to new members.

I’ve been poking around courses in Knoxville looking for a club too (for the regular game/competition aspect of it) and I am not seeing anything that’s really standing out. The Nooga seems to have a pretty solid place at the table for private golf and it seems affordable as well.

Pound for pound, Chattanooga has to be in the running for best depth golf options (private) in the country.

I’ll do that. I live in Nashville and the clubs here are playing a game to see how much they can charge before people will stop joining. They haven’t found that number yet.

A couple guys paid $300k to jump to the top of the waitlist at Golf Club of TN.

Golf Club is now $150k to sit on a waitlist. Richland is $100k to get in. Hillwood is going up and is close to $100k. The only one not playing that game is Belle Meade (which is a “bargain” at $85k) but thats a whole process to join.

Good stuff, thanks so much. Didn’t realize King Collins was working up on Signal, that’s great. The membership director at Signal was very quick to get back to me with details. Sounds like they have big plans this year for their centennial. I was a bit surprised that they currently have a 20 person wait list, and with the current assessment the financials were right up there with Black Creek.

Re: Council Fire, I loved it when I played a few years ago and its definitely on my short list. My wife’s sister lives up on Signal, but she has some childhood friends that are social members at CF, so there’s a lot of appeal there. Black Creek is a bit of a blind spot for her since the development started after she had moves away.
