Most underrated course in the state.

Hello, everyone. My name is Jackson and I somewhat recently relocated from Nashville to “just outside Chicago” (Western Suburbs), and I am looking to get involved with the Second City GC.

To answer the questions from the first post - favorite pizza place is Kim’s Uncle Pizza and Spotted Cow is my favorite beer.

Posting this here cuz I gotta share it somewhere:

I stopped playing golf all together for the better portion of a decade after finishing high school. I was burnt out from junior golf.

Picked the game back up in 2021/2022 and recently achieved the goal of becoming a +hcp. Lowest I’ve ever been in my life. I’ve truly fallen back in love with golf.

Recently played in an IL Am qualifier and while I missed it by 2 (E was the cut, shot +2), it was so much fun to get the competitive juices going.

Cheers to yall and NLU for re-igniting my love for the game.

Almost accused this account of being a @BadBrad burner until the mention of keeping a handicap.

Played Prairieview for the first time yesterday. This summer I’m being more intentional about playing golf with my old man and we are trying to find courses halfway between Galena and the burbs so we can meet in the middle. Rockford area seems to be the sweet spot. Was going to book Aldeen for our first round but I saw the Prairieview comment on here. Absolutely shocked at the quality of that place! My Dad said he’s bringing his regular m/w/f group out bc he liked it so much. Thanks for the recommendation!

Got 2 at Joe Louis on Friday 11:30 with me and Lobster Traps. 27$ to walk will be going to Aurelio’s in homewood and baseball game after at Windy City. Call Joe and book the spot if interested

Lots of spots open for tomorrow’s waveland breakfast club at sydney marovitz…515 sunrise, 505 balls in air. Cubs game is cancelled tonight, so can get to bed early and be at syd for some golf. Think there’s a whole foursome available!

Come for the raccoons, stay for the demolished 9th tee box.

Coming back to Chicago for a bachelor party next weekend. Any thoughts on Glencoe? I wanted HarborSide but the guys were against the price

If you’re up that way, Winnetka could be a good option- they just had a Reno too.

Glencoe is very solid, I think they are (or have been) renovating their clubhouse…but the course is really solid for the price (walking) so close to downtown

Glencoe is fine. Played a lot of fun golf there. Historic (1922). Current buildings are from the paleozoic era but now demolished. Keep your head on a swivel. New clubhouse/pro shop will be ready in 2026 (allegedly). Other comparable local options are Winnetka and Wilmette. Both have been through recent successful renovations.

If you’re casting a wide net between Harborside and Glencoe, you’ve got plenty of options. Sunset Valley (Highland Park) is a popular favorite. Great course. Heritage Oaks is a more interesting track than Glencoe in my book and better looked after. 10X better clubhouse for your bachelor party vibes. Chicagoland is #blessed with public golf, so much to choose from based on location/price/vibes.

But fuck it, you wanna kick it old school? Play the first public golf course west of the Allegheny Mountains. It’s just a very humble park district course, but Jackson Park is THE OG muni in the midwest. From 1899. Just celebrated its 125th anniversary! I’m not familiar with the action outside of the course these days (or even on the course) but you’ll have a story to tell and they sell plenty of beer there.

Explore more with this map. Tons of options. Godspeed.

Random, but this is one of the coolest sentences I’ve ever read. An 1927 Waukegan Daily Sun article about twilight golf at Bonnie Brook contained this as its final passage.

The scenery at Bonnie Brook is inspiring at any time, but in the evening, especially like last night, with the sun going down a great, red, flaming ball casting its roseate hues on the bank of soft, fluffy clouds and gilding dense background of tree tops to the west like a fairy picture, it is a thrill that makes life worth living.

They knew how to write back then.

Random story… a grandpa for a kid on my son’s baseball team starts talking to me about golf bc I’m wearing the wayward drive logo at the game on Thursday. Tells me about his buddy, who is now deceased, who was a member at Chicago Golf Club and brought him out a bunch. Apparently, the guy bought a house in the cul-de-sac across from the club house 30 years ago and when he was doing yard work one day a member walked across the street and chatted him up. Asked if he was a golfer, he was, and asked him if he wanted to join. Wtf??
