score relative to bringing the boom
all this activity to catch up on has me excited for Deck the Balls and ready to give up work for the holidayz
Makes me want to make the thread active again and eliminate the complicated digital bureaucracy known as discord
- When I came up with the idea for customizable course rankings, I had no idea Golf Scout existed. I set out to build a brand new type of website, one that I could not find elsewhere online. Golf Scout did not appear in my research for existing golf course rankings websites.
It was only when I was on the last step of creating my website which was building out a comprehensive golf course catalog that I discovered Golf Scout. It’s a great resource and one that I did not expect to exist. It made creating a minimum viable product easier so I decided to use it. I was not thinking about the copyright or any consequences of using information from another website.
Which leads to my responses to #2 and #3, I think these go together.
I should have proactively reached out to @golfscout before using the information on his copyrighted website. His email is easily found on his website and I did not realize I could contact him through The Refuge either.
My justification for using the data from Golf Scout was that I was only gleaning basic course facts (address, yardage, website, cost, etc) that can readily be found on the internet elsewhere. Yes, I skipped all the hard work of initially assembling a course catalog, but I do not believe I used any information that was unique to only Golf Scout. Golf Scout happened to be a place where all of this was already compiled. It provided me a faster method to acquire all this course summary data than going to each course’s website one-by-one so I decided to use it (again, did not consider copyright issues at the time).
When I came up with this website idea I set out to compete with GolfNow. GolfNow has these data points for courses, but their rankings/reviews features are awful. I am trying to invent a better way to evaluate the courses near you through an interactive and informative numerical rankings interface.
I am not trying to compete with Golf Scout on the immense level of qualitative data available for every course. I just wanted a course catalog with the basic facts available.
Not asking permission to gather a bunch of data from Golf Scout was a big-time fuckup. I now understand the mistakes I have made and am working to rectify this. I have contacted @golfscout privately.

This is less of a rankings and more of a humble brag of all the private courses you have played maybe you should start a website
No MPGC?
'# 40 Rivisloe…is that also a Donny ross?
This ranking list does not include calumet country club, and therefore I will not recognize it. This slander will not stand!
“Rivisloe” lol.
Flossmoor too high.
Bob O is too low based on what I’ve gleaned while playing SV.
Dubsdread way too high.
Wynstone looks like an insane Nicklaus housing development.
I have a feeling Midlothian is too low.
No Oak Park? It’s certainly better than Cantigny.
Crystal Tree and the Glen Club are both a joke. Get em out.
“Am I a joke to you?”
Anyone else wanna come to Deck the Ballz?
It’s an event started by @djheadley and taken over by me with his permission. See how easy it is to attribute credit to someone’s work??
Bull Valley? Stop.
Crystal Tree looks like one of the worst golf courses ever.
Just look at the 90 degree dog leg.
I want to play every golf course at least once, but this place goes right to the bottom of the list. The idea that this could be the 38th BEST golf course in the state is simply outrageous. But it is your list, so go ahead and defend it Mr. Pargame.
