Avoid golf

Was so cool today watching the Lydia Ko navigate the road hole almost exactly like she would have to at MP.

They are hosting Digest people to get some PR build going for renovation of the year. Only about 15 local folks from what I understand. It might also include Andy Johnson.

It’s likely cause you know Potts?

Roger Steele is hosting a group. He joined a few months back.

anyway, it’s going to be a proper steam shower out there. Hope you enjoy. Interested in your feedback. I’ve only played it 4-5 times. Work travel sucks.

Adding “Stand on Medinah Road to hopefully see Roger Steel play 16 so I can thank him for everything he does online” on my list of things to do tonight

I’ll also listen for the distinct sound of a Wilson Covert Driver in case @wseitz26 is nearby

It was a mix of Potts, Andy, another guy I played with named Aaron, though I didn’t get his last name. Also played with John Cashman. Should have had Fito get me another Jason Cheney. I’ll make sure to put one on your tab when I’m back there on the 11th.

2006 US Open champ was there too.

Didn’t realize that wine glass was in the way when I snuck the pic.

#3 is really good and will be super fun for members. Tons of width and playability, but still really challenging

What’s this Covert bullshit? I’m a Triton DVD man through and through!

I’m heading to the Pearl Jam show at Wrigley on Thursday (8/29) and ended up with an extra as of now. Anyone looking for one?

Downside is you’d be sitting with me and my college friends. Face value was $160, but the secondary market has somehow tanked so I’m pretty flexible if someone wants to go.

Thanks!

Hey gang,

Long time NLU junkie, 1st time Refuge/Nest member but better to join community late than never right? Briefly met Tron this weekend at the BMW Championship and my level of excitement made me question why I am not supporting the program, so here I am. Not sure if intros are commonplace but let’s give it a shot.

27 years old living in Lakeshore East and a full-blown golf addict in every sense of the word. Play weekly, member of 5irons, travel the country to hit the bucket list type player. Outside of playing, I am a romanticizer of the history, literature, design, etc. I am steadily growing my book collection of Mackenzie journals, old Doak limited prints, etc.

My brother and I were both Evans Scholars, and are deeply involved in the WGA and Evans Scholarship Foundation to support caddies with financial hardship. We (both engineers) also started our own golf course engineering and architecture company based in Colorado where he currently lives, which is finally getting some momentum.

All that to say, golf is truly part of who I am, and I don’t think there is anyone/any content I can relate to more than the NLU gang. Excited to join a community of like-minded fellas, talk shop, and get some meetups going!

Pretty sure MP is in one of those Mackenzie journals or Doak prints. I’m sure we could read up on it.

Any thoughts on Park Hills in Freeport? East or West course?

The fact that this immediately came up makes me weary of potentially strong opinions in this group but I will not let that damper the passion in mine. I think it’s a fantastic course for a multitude of reasons:

  1. I must caveat this explanation with the fact that I truly love Dave Esler’s work. He embodies everything my company strives for in design; Golden Age minimalism that leans on complex subtleties and charm rather than the more prevalent heroic modern approaches we see today. Don’t get me wrong, I love to be the occasional masochist and play a perfectly manicured Dye course, but that’s not my bread and butter. But more importantly, he truly cares about environmental sustainability and stewardship which is the bottom line mission of what I am striving to achieve in my own work. He is also doing the redesign of Hinsdale Golf Club where I caddied for 9 years and received the Evans from, which piles on to my previously mentioned biases.

  2. I think Mt. Prospect is a compliment to the Chicagoland area and our architecture IQ with all of his subtle homages to classic architects. It isn’t a recreation course or pure template holes, but a tasteful use of a partial biarritz or redan hole gets me romantic about the history of the game / design. He doesn’t slap you in the face with it and I believe that says something about his opinion on our ability to understand it.

  3. I know the greens are tough, but that doesn’t bother me. I think the contouring is extremely interesting and allows for the course to play so much different based on pin position, which keeps me coming back even after I have 5 3-putts in 1 round.

All-in-all, I think it is a layered, thought-invoking design and that’s the type of course that gets me out of bed in the morning. Who am I kidding, any course gets me out of bed, but you know what I mean.

For all the haters that may come out of the woodwork, I am ready to die on this hill. Give me your best.
