Roll Call: British Columbia

I played Talking Rock near Chase back in July and had a lot of fun. Only complaint was that it was over watered. Good hot dogs at the turn as well

Thanks, I did explore this for our group but no tee times, I’ll check again for singles and see if I can’t get on myself.

Shout out to @MarkInVictoria for being one of the monthly winner on the Nest Podcast! Way to represent BC!

I hadn’t listened so thanks for the heads up. I’m glad that one of my stupid jokes got some love.

It was for your Ryder Cup/Walker Cup post…I had not seen it, but it was vey clever. @Randy was quite jealous that he had not that of it first!

Hey all - new to the Refuge but been following along for over a year.

Anyone in the Vancouver area interested in joining a golf league next year? I’m looking at applying for a ā€œRefuge Roostā€ as we have been going as a group for a few years.

Quick synopsis: The current format plays April - Sept and we have about 25 golfers of various skill levels (HC from 2 to 30). It is a season long Fed Ex Cup style series. 2 rounds per month at various courses in the Lower Mainland and a Tour Championship (over 2 weeks) in September. You don’t need to play all the rounds but you don’t score points if you miss a round. There is no set day or time to play each month - as you can play anytime in that month, as long as you play with another Tour member. We do setup days each month where we try to get more people together.

Sounds like a blast man, I’m always up for something that has a little juice.

Maybe @SloppyLayup, and @Sarah would be into it as well? Rounds at Langara could be a solid template to putting up scores a couple times a month and be relatively accessible for everyone if necessary.

Let me know if you need any other info from my end, and thanks for the (blanket) invite :+1:

good to hear from you. I usually start planning the Tour early in new year for first rounds in April. Will reach out with details then. Fraserview is one of the courses on the list - we also play Mayfair lakes, Northview, Westwood plateau and about 6 others. Moves around each month.

Cool, I think I misunderstood the course selection criteria initially but that sounds great.

I’m chewing on an idea for a pre-masters jaunt to Victoria. May be solo, skip coercing partially willing partners and just plan for myself.

I’m seeing some decent area packages, and flights are very good.

Realistically what should I be ready for in late march/April in Victoria?

My parents are in Nanaimo so I’m not totally unfamiliar with what it could be like. Golf wise with Victoria being that little bit more south, is it soggy fairways and plugged lies? Or can I hope for decent, even if it’s cool conditions? It should be full spring there in my optimistic mind?

@MarkInVictoria good plan? Crack plan?

March/April should be soggy but pretty decent. Everywhere will be open. You can get some shorts weather days if you’re lucky. November to January are the wettest months. February could have a freak snowstorm. But you should get good spring conditions then.

Thanks, one thing I have never missed is that disappointing splat of a fatted saturated fairway hit.

I’ll have to weigh these feelings longer.

Also the potential for freshly punched greens as many courses do their spring aeration in late Mar / early April. As per @MarkInVictoria definitely soggy - however better than being inside or on the driving range with heaters for all of Nov-Feb!!

I am a member at Nanaimo Golf Club, which has some of the better drainage on the Island; we would still be playing preferred lies then, but it is borderline needed by then.
As mentioned, there is a possibility of punched greens. Depending on the year, our course typically punches sometime in the first half of April…they wait until overnight lows don’t dip down much below 8 degrees.
If you are in the Nanaimo area, hit me up and I can have you out as a guest. I am biased, but it is a great track, and with the drainage and quality greens is great to play year round. Maybe we could even get a few other Nest members in on it if they can make the trip up Island or from the Mainland.

Thanks for the offer i would love to take you up on that at some point as I will be in Nanaimo eventually to visit family. My dad spent over 20 years overlooking the course at fairwinds and they were always battling water in weird spots, it never seemed to end, it just shifted elsewhere. When I was in town I would usually jump in his Sunday morning game with his buddies the ā€œcockroachesā€ who I think may also play at Nanaimo.

Anyways I’ll keep it in mind. There’s a lot of golf on the island to explore so maybe going the other way would make sense later in the year.

Sick that Vancouver/western Canada is getting a roost. Do you have a logo planned?

Edit: if not, my suggestion would be something based off the Glaciers logo, a Single A Summer ball team that played in GVRD for one whole summer in the 90s

Fantastic news and looking forward to being an official roost! I have been running the Mayhem GC for about 10 years and its year long tour series based in Vancouver for the past 2 years. We have about 25 active members. I am excited to welcome new ā€œgolf sickosā€ to join us. See logo below.

Re: upcoming events - The Mayhem Tour (runs April-Sep / 2 events per month) & will likely be setting up some meetups for Island folks and Interior. Qualification to represent the club at Regional Championship will probably come from a couple different avenues (Tour & one off events). Lots of planning to come as dates for National and Regional Championship come up.

At this point - anyone on The Refuge interested in joining Mayhem GC should send me an email or DM and I can get a mail list started to keep everyone in the loop. (Pls include email, refuge handle & if you are nest member or not). Happy holidays to all!!
(and boo to the Duck Club!!) :grinning:
