Roll Call: Austin/San Antonio

Up near the Domain you might have an easier time going to some of the public courses towards Cedar Park/Leander - Teravista/Crystal Falls/Avery Ranch, but I do think that making your way 35 min south to Lions is a must. I think if you can swing it, Roy Kizer is a fun fun time. Hancock (as a heads up) is def a nice little handshake 9-hole - just don’t get rattled by the fact that there’s no pro shop, only what appears to be a parking meter that lets you pay for tee times

35 minutes in gridlock traffic maybe. otherwise thats 15. don’t think its some big haul.

Fair - I always account for worst case scenarios on Mopac or 35

I think I’m going to play Hancock on Monday the 24th. It’s pretty much a “me” day to fart around town.

Question for Austin. If I’ve been to Salt Lick before and am in town wanting bbq, should I go back - I loved it - or go to Terry Blacks?

Salt Lick is fine, but there is plenty better. Terry Blacks is a good option.

Leroy & Lewis, LA Barbecue, Mickelthwait, Intersteller, Valentina’s, Franklin all great options too.

+1 vote for Mickelwait, undervalued asset

Valentina’s is caput

RIP Valentinas, best breakfast tacos in Austin.

LA BBQ would be my choice, or a pre-order and 10am pickup of Franklin if you have enough lead time.

Dang, sad to hear about Valentina’s.

Hey Stroh, PTC roost member here. I’m going to be visiting San Antonio the weekend of March 21st. I’m thinking about playing Brackenridge or Hill Country Golf Club as they will be close to where I’m staying. If there are better courses in the area to check out, open to recs. Thanks in advance

you will enjoy brack (historic and walkable course that hosted all the texas opens in the early 1900s). make sure to check out the list of champions in the back room in the clubhouse. hill country is fun and offers a nice, 3 9 holes if you’re staying at the hotel. might want to check out the quarry golf course.

Riverside in SA has had a recent renovation, and is getting rave reviews from many @STROHS … Brack is fantastic, you won’t regret it, either, and HCGC is standard resort-golf fare (although usually in really good condition).

yes but entirely the owners fault. mismanaged the shit out of it, went into crazy debt, stopped paying employees. Nightmare scenario that needed to get shutdown.

Tale as old as time … good cooks / chefs sometimes make terrible business people. I have first-hand experience as a backing investor, unfortunately (I was a small-stakes investor, but still … hard to watch it all crumble right in front of your face, when the food truck had lines down the street every single day it was open lol).

They’re just following the Trudy’s playbook. Shame to see.

Yeah, but Trudy’s was a solvent business for 40+ years, and while it had it’s operating issues, the family finally decided the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze and preferred retirement. They weren’t forced into it by gross mismanagement. Edit to add - I’m a little surprised that they didn’t try and sell off the name + assets. Trudy’s was an austin institution, one would think that’d be worth SOMETHING, which might indicate some mis-management in the background. I don’t have any insider information.

coming in from cold and snowy Wisconsin - heading to Austin for a family trip last week of march. any course recs would be appreciated!

lots of us around; ping me here as the date gets and we’ll get you into our discord, too.

Do you know what part of town you’re staying in?

looks like Jonestown. family vacation. we’ll be in town the 22nd-28th. as far as I know nothing firmly on the schedule, so I can get away to play some golf.
